Hey,

This is for all you ladies and gentlemen who are currently striving to live an all around healthier lifestyle. Working on losing those last few pounds? Wonderful, post your goals and updates here. Trying to quit smoking or whatever it may be that you need to give up? Lovely, bring it all here.

As for me:

Start weight on July 13, 2008 - 290 pounds
Current weight as of my Friday weigh-in today - 271 pounds.

Smoking - Well, I've tried quitting once before and it didn't turn out very well. However, they say that with things like losing weight and quitting addictions, it can take quite a few tries before you actually stick with it. So, here's to an attempt (along with determination) within the next couple of days.

Note, this is all about health. Please don't encourage starvation, fad diets, quick fixes that don't last, etc.

My goal is to worry less.

If a negative thought enters...to move on.

I also want to have places in the yard to sit - that are cement..not really a chair but seating.....  another neighbor compliented e today on the yard.  :-)

has anyone ever had a $50 rock break?   once it breaks-- a smaller rock isnt worth as much.

Congrats on your weight loss!! That is so impressive. I'm trying to get back into my super smoking super strong dancer body that I lost once I stopped dancing 6 days a week. I'm exercising 5 times a week, and watching the portions. I've lost 17 pounds all together.. but it is slow moving... If only I could stop partying every night.. that surely would help :) What changes have you made in your life to encourage a healthier lifestyle?

17 pounds is great! And the exercise really helps. I eat at a -1000 calorie per day deficit. Which generally puts my weekly weight loss at around 2 pounds per week seeing as 3500 calories = 1 pound of fat. Let's see, I do Tae Bo 3 times a week and strength training 3 times a week. All my workouts are done at home. The nearest gym is 30 minutes away. I bought myself a used weight bench, free weights, and a stability ball for $60.  I also walk everyday to top it all off. Since I'm eating at a calorie deficit, I shouldn't be able to build much, if any, muscle. But, the strength training helps me to retain my current muscle. When I get to my ideal weight, I plan to go for adding a bit of muscle.

I pay more attention to the foods that I eat as well. For instance, I don't eat 2000 calories of pizza and chips per day. Of course, I do eat pizza. If you deny yourself the foods that you enjoy competely, it usually ends with binges and simply giving up. Moderation is key, as with all things in life...aside from sex.

Pahunkboy, worrying less is a dandy goal and I think we all could benefit from that one. Good luck!

I would not recommend trying to quit smoking while trying to lose weight. While they are not mutually exclusive, for most people the only way to achieve both is to be sentenced to hard labor in a prison camp.

I have my ideas and they paralell none of the mainstream ideas but are somewhat like the Atkins approach. First of all skipping food for a day is not starvation, it is what you do after that day that counts. People will do that and then gorge themselves the next day. That is extremely counterproductive. If you can't fight hunger well enough to avoid doing that, skipping a day is probably not the best method for you.

A good thing is to cut down carbs, and if you can, sugar. Carbs are necessary in certain amounts, but I firmly believe that what the establishment says is wrong. Unless you are extremely physically active, you need less carbs than they say. You need some to keep everything flowing smoothly, but most people overdo carbs by near orders of magnitude.

I my view, for example, a meal with a piece of meat, veggies, even like broccoli dripping with cheese and perhaps one small potato (smaller than the peice of meat) is healthier than the same piece of meat with a huge portion of mashed potatoes.

I am off to work soon, but I have more. Cangrats on losing the weight. I know myself how much harder it is to take it off than to put it on.

Let me put this to you, the mainstream medical community has a recommended diet. Each country has their own. In this country we have among the highest incidence of obesity, the highest medical costs and the highest rates of certain diseases which actually can be cured. This is proven fact and I will dig up some proof.

Off to work.

I had this same problem when I started going to the gym. My trainer told me not to worry about the scale...how did I feel and how were my clothes fitting me was what he was concerned with.  I told him the good news is none of my jeans from last year fit....the bad news is none of my jeans from last year fit and I really don't enjoy shopping!!!

I'm not so worried about the weight...that will come off the more I work out. I feel great.  My only issue was glucose levels and they are so low I'm off one med and will, hopefully be off the other by my next dr. appt. in 3 months.

I'm back on a vegetarian/almost vegan diet and watching the amount of carbs and sugar.

Good luck everyone!

Congratulations to you all who are seeing positive differences.

As for the smoking issue, I know it will be hard to lose while quitting. I figure I'll have to shoot for either maintaining my current weight or minimizing any fat gain while in the process of "quitting". I plan to stock up on low calorie gums and hard candies. Plenty of veggies should also help. Either way, the smoking issue is larger than the weight issue. I'd rather get the smoking out of the way and put the weight loss on hold for a couple of weeks. With all the exercise I get and with how obsessed I am about controlling what goes into my body, I don't think I'll have huge problems with any weight gain.

TwistedLady, I've smoked nearly all my life and have tried nearly every means to quit.  When the time comes, I recommend cold turkey over any of it.  Tell yourself you do not smoke because you do not light cigarettes and put them in your mouth...period.  Do not buy them, do not have ashtrays, etc. around.  Settle in for about a week's worth of skin-crawling misery and ride it out, sleeping or walking or doing anything to pass the time; in a week, it is mostly be over.

One more thing...once you do quit..never smoke again.  Not once.  That is how I lost a year-long gain and the next time I quit I will not be so careless.

Best wishes.

I got rid of all ashtrays, washed my clothes and bedding so they didn't smell like cigarettes. There was a lot of toothbrushing! The hardest part for me was habit, I had to stop drinking coffee for awhile because coffee = cigarettes in my head, stop lights were the same way. Take note of when you automatically smoke and alter the behavior linked to it. I quit for 7 years, and yes I need to quit again. The only way I can do it is cold-turkey, because if I taper off I can always rationalize needing that one cigarette.

Good luck, and good news on the weight loss!

Like pahunk said, my healthier living is focused on stress management right now.

Several years ago I hit my max of 310 lbs. I decided it was time to do something about it and started eating less and walking about 3 miles a day. I got down to 270 in about a year's time.

Unfortunately, this was also the same time that I started going back to school to get my BS degree, and, well, I spent a lot of time sitting and studying, and didn't have much time to exercise other than the approximately 3-5 miles a week walking back and forth to classes. Due to the lack of time, I also started eating out more instead of cooking my own food, and just generally forgot about my weight loss goals.

That was 4 years ago. About a month ago I got on a scale and was somehow shocked to see that I was back up to 295. I have since started getting back on track and have lost 5 lbs, mostly from just taking the time to make my own food, and being more conscious of what I eat.

I probably put on 5 lbs or more just during the last two weeks of school last semester when I was living off of mostly fried chicken from the convenience store that I pass every day on my way home from school, and jellybeans.

That was so wrong.

I did the curves thing, and I didn't like them, plus when I tried to quit and cancle my membership due to a back injury they said I had to go to my doctor and have my doctor provide them with a note saying I was indeed injured before they'd cancle my membership. Congratulations on doing something though:) We joined 24 hour fitness and was going now going screeched to a halt sadly, and I can't get the motivation or enthusiasim back up for going.

Sir and I are two weeks into the quitting smoking thing (and it's amazing but we haven't killed each other yet!). Whenever I get a craving for one I drink an 8 ounce glass of water. I made sure that there are no salty snack foods or sweets in the house (other than some hard candies which also help a little). No foods outside meal times unless they are fresh fruit or veggies. I'm bound and determined I'm not going to gain that "average" 7 lbs that comes with quitting. So far, so good. I'm also taking up belly dancing.

This is a good time of year for me to do this because it's long enough before all the Holiday cooking and entertaining. Also, it's the season that I am most active. I'm out in the woods alot at this time of year gearing up for hunting season, so lots of hiking.

Oh yeah....and I'm trying to do lots more organic foods all the way from herbs and spices to meats. Long way to go to reach that goal entirely but that is the direction we're headed.
