subtee -> Ignorance or Spinning Fear? (9/14/2008 11:26:19 AM)

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska, Sept. 11 -- Gov. Sarah Palin linked the war in Iraq with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, telling an Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers that included her son that they would "defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans."

I was wondering if folks here would comment.

Even Bush stopped claiming that awhile ago.

No one ever went broke underestimating the American public.

There are al qeada terrorists fighting in Iraq as well as Afganistan.

subtee -> RE: Ignorance or Spinning Fear? (9/14/2008 12:41:27 PM)

But they weren't there before 9/11 and our invasion of Iraq. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

Don't y'all know political science ?

1. If you repeat a lie enough times it becomes truth.

2. If you lie, see # 1

Notice the partial quotes in the story... Rule number one for me when reading a story like that is to look for the full context of the quote, and more importantly the full sentence.

Just a suggestion.

I'm sorry,  Thadius, I couldn't find a written transcript. Perhaps telling it is not included on either Palin's nor McCain's official Web sites.
Here is the video:

Also alarming to me, she claims more than once that victory will be achieved. General Petraeus has strenuously postited that this cannot and will not be claimed.

Thanks for the link.

I found nothing alarming, at least to me, in that speech.  Seemed like a typical send off speech, having witnessed a couple in my days, the only difference in this one was that the person delivering it was also the parent of one of those being deployed.

"The governor did not address her son by name in her remarks but spoke broadly on behalf of the troops' families. "Don't mind us -- your parents, your friends, your family -- if we allow for a few tears or if we hold you just a little closer once more before you're gone," she said. "We're going to miss you. We can't help it, we're going to miss you."
She continued: "You may not need our protection anymore. In fact, you're the ones who will now be protecting us, protecting America."

Now that was touching.....thanks for sharing

It would be touching if they were going to Iraq to protect their homeland but they aren't, they are going to Iraq to project US imperial power.

Then I would like to ask you, do you think she doesn't know that Iraq was not involved with 9/11 or do you think it was a deliberate link for another reason? Or is there another explanation for her to say something the Bush administration has admitted is not true for years?

thishereboi -> RE: Ignorance or Spinning Fear? (9/14/2008 1:35:08 PM)

They are going where they are told to go. No one asks them ahead of time.

We are currently fighting al-Qaeda in Iraq, subtee.

Governor Palin is entirely correct in what she said in that speech.

I didn't see her claim that Iraq was responsible for 9/11, perhaps that is where the seperation of opinions is.  There is no doubt in anybody's mind that a branch of Al Qaeda has been fighting in Iraq, along with other groups.  Some folks seem to want to make that link from her remarks, I can see how it is being spun, I just don't see the same thing in her remarks.
