it just blows my mind that if a politician is a christian it is said he will legislate his religion on others, but if the politician is a jew, muslim, or a non-believer he is considered fair & objective.

That's not entirely true.  The politician has to be Republican.  Because we Republicans are too uptight.  We don't believe in sex.  It's dirty, nasty, evil... oh gosh I'm gonna puke.

I don't know about other religions.  I'm still flabbergasted at what "supposed" Republicans did to Romney's religion.  He took a pretty big hit in the primaries for being a Mormon.

But I find it interesting that a person's religious affiliation is even an issue at all.  And me, being as probably anti-religion as you could ever find, really doesn't care.  And yet year after year after painstaking year, what church a candidate goes to is top of the "we're gonna get you" list.

Just look at the clip being circulated of Sarah's prayer request in her church.

BestBaby I am a Christian and as such have no fears of other Christians....I will say this though my skin tends to tingle when one of my fellow Christians claims to know Gods will....makes me sort of nervous...you kno what I mean?

I'm not so sure about that.  I mean, Obama, Clinton, Biden, they're all christians.  I don't think for a second that either of the three would have actively attempted to legislate their religion on everyone.  That seems to be a Neo-Con value entirely, to say "If you don't believe the exact same way I do, you're wrong and I'm going to beat my god into you!"

A:  Welcome to the forums. *HUG*
B:  Try living in Salt Lake City for a while, you'll know why he got hit like that.  Although, I do agree in a way.  I was shocked that Romney took that kind of hit from the Neo-Con, religious right.  Seriously, he's about as conservative, about as greedy, about as much of a filthy liar and corrupt politician as you'll ever see, and loaded with money as well!  By all rights, he should be the current Republican trends poster boy.  Although, he did huge here in Utah.  Something like 90% in the caucusses...  Then again, that's not a surprise either.  Most of the people in the state are not much different than him.

Now, personally, I don't give a shit if someone worships the raging toenail god of the north, as long as they don't try to shove their beliefs down my throat or into my bedroom door, or up the backside of the people I love (their backsides are MINE damnit!  Hands off!).

If I think they can do a good job running things, I'll vote for them.  I look for important things, such as, views on economy, views on healthcare, views on veterans affairs (primary partner is a disabled vet, as has been most of my family, and I've seen what the current administration has done to 'honour our veterans'.  It makes me fucking sick.), on our liberties and freedoms, on this sham of a 'war' that is... well, I don't even want to get into that.

That is what gets my votes, period, not what mythical being they choose to worship in whatever way on whatever day in whatever building with whatever candles and incense and robes.

Vendaval, why do you need "others" to speak up for you?

I pay attention to the groups and organizations whose policies and positions on the issues are closest to my own.  Tere is the advantage in working with a group toward a common goal.

A good case in point was my involvement in a local political issue, the Casmalia Toxic Waste Dump.  Many of my friends were leaders in a grassroots campaign to close the dump and eventually we succeded.  Not every community is lucky enough to have a EPA Superfund site. (sarcasm people)

"Casmalia, California
The two toxic landfills near the tiny Santa Barbara County town of Casmalia received more than four billion pounds of waste between 1973 and 1989, much of it from area industries and businesses. The EPA is now spending $30 million to clean up the area. Local activists like Lou Dunn say that's not nearly enough, given the human toll. "People have no idea of how dangerous these sites really are," Dunn says. The health problems catalogued here are almost too numerous to detail, with blood disorders, and childhood cancers among the most prevalent. So prevalent, in fact, that 72 doctors practicing near the town once took out a full page ad in a local newspaper in order to apprise residents and federal authorities of the seriousness of the situation."

Yes, we know.

I write to my congressman and senators all by myself.
And I let them have it too!

And I applaud you for doing so.

If you let someone else do your talking "for" you they could fuck up and you might end up with something you don't want.

That depends on the situation, the stakes and the personalities involved.

Unless it's a lawyer talking "for" you don't default and let someone else talk for you.

Lawyers are frequently a necessity in our society but that is a whole other thread.

Besides, it's real "wussy" to do so.

Working together with other people who have the same priorities and goals does not fit my definition of "wussy".

yes hoodie...that is more what i meant.  Governor Palin has been held to a different standard here.  because she believes and prays as many christians do.  her statements made in her church are being picked apart and used against her.  i have heard posters here say that she will impose her religious beliefs on everyone.
i agree the same awful tactics were used on Governor Romney.
yes other politicians such as Hillary Clinton & Joe Biden are christian, but they are not labeled as dangerous for their religious beliefs.  suppose their prayers were plastered all over the news to picked apart?

hoodie,  thank you!

even Governor Palin commended Senator Hillary Clinton on her accomplishments as a primary candidate for president and her service as a US Senator.  Palin expressed how she respected and admired Hillary for her professional career even though they disagree politically.   Palin stated that she loves working with women, no matter republican or democrat, because women have a secret bond (how we women have to work twice as hard to gain the same success as men).

how can any woman deny the fact, that Governor Palin's being on the republican ticket is a big step forward for women of America.

edited to thank hoodie!

An intelligent woman that is fully aware that Palin was chosen for two reasons and two reasons ONLY.......
1. she is a woman
2. she leans towards the extreme right
.........finds #1 exceedingly offensive and pandering by the males that made the choice.

I am wondering why the very experienced Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison was not the GOP VP choice -

That is exactly where the problem with the argument lies in claiming "Palin was chosen simply to pander to women.".  There were other women being vetted, and looked at.  The background of Palin is what put her over the top, and that is not taking anything away from Sen Hutchinson.  I think most of the anger and disgust by those opposing her nomination comes from a deeper place, Palin doesn't fit the stereotypical view that some have of a conservative or Republican woman.

Just my observations.

What specifically would make either of these two Republican women more likely to be chosen than the other?

i agree with you Thadius.  as the author of the first article stated Hutchison is not charismatic and not much on public speaking.  Palin on the other hand appeals to men & women.  she has a huge approval rating in her home state remember.

Wrong. Biden is a Catholic, Obama is a christian, but Palin is a whacko creationsist.  Her views are so extreme and her fervent religious beliefs are way too radical to trust her in public office to uphold the seperation of church and state. Plus, she is a proven liar. Not really plusses for an elected VP.

Personality, how approachable, how folks relate to them, the story behind the woman, their positions on issues dear to the head of the ticket, and many, many more reasons.  Energy and charisma along with policy seem to have been enough to make the decision, and that decision seems to have born fruit.

As baby has pointed out, the ability to speak in public would be another strong selling point.

Just to mention a few.

You have a double-standard here. You are operating under the thought process and stereotype that Republicans are anti-women and the only reason they would give women power is for political gain. Meanwhile Democrats are pro-women and genuinely care for their issues.

This is a double-standard and an incorrect generalization.

Because I am sure that if Obama had choosen Hillary that you would not feel that he was pandering for the female vote. Am I correct in that assumption?
You've made your voting decision well before the VPs were picked. So your thought process is biased at this point in time. You are only searching for reasons to confirm you made the right choice. So you've resorted to making outrageous generalizations and stereotypes. Everyone does this. It's general psychology. We like to confirm to ourselves that we made a right decision. And in order to do that, we sometimes lose the true perception of reality. It's human to do this.

Sorry cyber, you are wrong. For you to try and tell me, anything about me personally, is assinine. You do not know me. You do not know my character, nor do you know my thought process.

That would be like me, saying that, because I am obviously correct in my views, you cannot argue them, so instead you made it personal and about me and my thought process. Which would be an assumption on my part, about you, your character, and your thinking. An assumption I will not make.

It would behoove you to do the same.

No sense in posting something that promotes a rumor.  If you wish to make a point, do so with fact and logic.  Obama is not a Muslim.
