Come on Thadius you can admit that her tag line "I told congress thanks, but no thanks"is/was an out and out lie to the American public...and at some point during the debate(if they haven't muzzled Joe)it should be thrown back in her face....at that point maybe...just maybe she will remove it from her one approved speech.

In context I don't believe it to be a lie.  When the topic was brought back up by Sen. Stevens and he tried to get the funding again, she was in office and said no.  That they were going to go with the more fiscally responsible route of ferries.  I am not suggesting that she was not for the bridge at any time, I am simply suggesting that after taking office and studying the issue that she and Alaskans came up with a different solution.  Remember, Alaska doesn't need the federal funds to build the bridge, as they have over an $8 Billion surplus.

Just my opinion,
Thadius
This would seem to be splitting hairs, would it not Thadius.Certainly it wasn't the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
Not that i don't expect politicians to lie,I have been around for awhile and accept that it comes with the territory, just don't insult me when you lie to me...and in a nod towards bipartisianship I will cite one such whopper that left me feeling insulted...."I didn't inhale"...a whole nother story that one..

Of course.

As of now, the Presidential debates of '08, and the VP debates, are probably going to be suspended, while they "deal with the crisis in Washington." McCain and Co. will try and drag this out as long as they can. The closer to the election they can get, without actually having to discuss who the hell Palin is, and what shitty mistakes he made in deregulating the banking industry, the better.

Hummm   "Bait and switch" doesn't really describe the con here. (Frankly, I was expecting Palin to "have the flu" 24 hours before the debate...) What DO they call it, when a con man sells a rube something without any details? I think it's called a "Push."

Actually, there was an investigative report on CNN about it this morning.

The bridge project had already been killed but the funds were used to build a three mile road that used $24 million of earmark money.

The road has nothing on it and dead-ends at the bridge site.  No traffic uses it because there is nothing on it for any one to get to.  People use it to walk their dogs.

CNN interviewed a former aide to the Governor who explained that the funding and contracts were already in place when Palin took office.

When asked, she could not explain why the contracts could not be broken or why the funds weren't diverted to a more useful highway project.

It all depends Mike on what they told her she is allowed to say and not say, I mean we can't have her blathering on about seeing Russia from her window and how to make mooseburgers on a national forum now can we? Hopefully they will give her some easy GOP talking points to fire up the base, like "America, love it or leave it" and "The Bush Doctrine: make your own definition". Or how about "Evolution: I say hell no." [:-]
Personally I like this one....."Abstinence it works all of the time"

What was it about this person all you Republicans liked?.... All the politics she's been involved in and they chase the press away?

Amazing!

The reason those contracts could not be broken is because the money was specifically earmarked by Federal mandate for that project, and had already been paid out as she took office.

There is a toll booth on the road, and it is manned (well womaned).

I know splitting hairs.  Try taking a look at the 116 earmarks of the other nominee for this year... The first time in 36 years that he has ever shed light on any of them.  There are a couple of interesting bridge projects [;)]

Thadius the point isn't that they bring back pork,it is the out and out lie,the misleading claim of being a "reformer" and of being a fiscal conservative....she is neither of these things ....and one look at her public record both as Mayor and Gov.refute her claims...and still she makes them...

Did she grow the economy when she was mayor? How about lowering property taxes?

Has she cut spending as Gov?  How about returning excess money in the coffers to the taxpayers?  Did she take on the establishment in her home state, including her own party?

How does anything in the other tickets claims suggest they will bring about any sort of change? The top of the ticket has voted 97% of the time with the party line (when he has voted), the bottom of the ticket is the definition of Washington insider.

Don't get me wrong there are issues I have with her and McCain, but there is enough harping on that ticket going on around here that I don't need to add to it.

What we need at this point, is not so much a debate, as a VP "quiz show"... Ask them both basic quations about the job, world affairs, domestic and economic history and policy... and see which one buzzes in with the correct answer....

Care to guess who'd win in THAT sceanrio?

How about skipping the bullshit questions, and ask them (EITHER of them - or either of the presidential candidates for that matter) to simply recite the Bill of Rights.  Yep - just the Bill, which is only the first 10 amendments to the constitution - and all the Easy amendments at that!  I'm willing to bet $20 that NONE of the four of them could actually accomplish it without a speech writer, teleprompter, a dozen "advisors" whispering in their ear, and time to reherse.

Hell, at this point, I'd settle for a candidate that I actually had some faith had even once Glanced At the Constitution - let alone had gone to the trouble of actually Learning any of it!

slvemike4u -> RE: Biden/Palin "debate" to be a complete farce (9/24/2008 5:05:51 PM)

I think the bar has tobe set a mite higher than that georgia peach.

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Biden/Palin "debate" to be a complete farce (9/24/2008 5:36:24 PM)

Mike, while it probably Should be higher - when you take a really good look at ANY of the current politicians you'll find that 99.9% Can't Reach That Bar.  If they COULD, they would be taking a lot more pains NOT to trample into the dust the Responcibilities To Us that they accepted when they took office.  And they sure as fuck wouldn't be so godsdamned quick to use our Constitutional Rights as proverbial toilet paper.  Since probably 99.99% of the American Public is the same way, it's not really that surprising to me.  Disturbing yes, surprising not at all.  And, yes, the reason that we have folks in office who fail to meet what should be even minimal standards (hell, there are tougher standards to become a nationalized citizen than there are to run for political office!) is because we - as a whole, as a nation, as a people - can't be counted on As A Group to do any Better.

WE, collective, put them All (that's right, All - both of the candidates in both major parties) where they are now.  WE, collective, have stood by complacently apathetic while they ran roughshod over us, ignoring our right and Duty to keep a close eye on those We place in office to see to it that they've got OUR best interests in mind 100% of the time - not the best interests of their buddies, their pals, and their various corporate sponcers.  WE, collective, have no right to bitch - because WE CREATED THE PROBLEM by voting for any of them in the First Place, And FAILING TO IMMEDIATELY FIRE their sorry asses (out of a Cannon!) When They Didn't Do Their Jobs..

Not one - not a single one - of the candidates for president OR vice president inspires the Least bit of Confidence or Hope in me.  They're all 4 worthless.  They're all 4 shit.  They all 4 have lousy records as politicians.  They All 4 Needed To Be Voted Out Of Politics YEARS ago.

IIRC, Obama taught Constitutionsal Law. I think one would need a passing familiarity to do that.

Those who can, do.  Those who can't, teach.  Those who can't teach, administrate.

His erstwhile time as an instructor doesn't seem to have done him any good - his voting record still sucks diseased mucus, what liitle there actually IS of his voting record, considering that he simply voted "present" the vast majority of the time.  What, exactly, does a vote of "present" mean in the halls of congress?  Does it mean "I'm here, but I'm to apathetic to vote"?  Does it mean "I'm here, and I Want to vote X, but my party says vote Y, and I can't go agains the party line"?  Does it mean "I'm here, and I want to vote X OR Y, but that would hurt my money machine"?

Or perhaps it simply means "I'm here, but I'm to stupid to have a clue what's going on, so I'll fake it."

Here's your big oops, they did *not* about saying "thanks but no thanks" about the debacle though now did they? pathological liar Palin has so many oopsies that the debate is going to be a cakewalk for Joe. That is if princess allows press, or doesn't totally get it dumbed down so the "Roseanne' and "Larry The cable Guy" crowd can follow along. Oops.

Oh, I actually think they would love that question... as she looks over at Joe and points out he is running for his 7th term as a Senator... Yeah that is a full 36 years as a Senator, already under his belt.

Not to mention as she points out that both Senator Biden voted Yay for the Bridge to Nowhere.  And if memory serves right... so did Mr. Obama.

oops?

Your indignation is noted..though useless.  You're talking to the choir.  I was being all inclusive on the bridge to nowhere, since NONE of them can point a finger at the other, when they're all complicit in one way or another.

Ya missed the point of the original post that you took that quote from, Hippie.  The point of the original post being - regardless of what their resume says, if they had any real Understanding of the Constitution, they would NOT be doing in office collectively what they've BEEN doing.  All of them.  Yes, that includes your personal pet candidate.  If he actually Understood the Constitution, he'd have a voting record from his time in congress to prove it.  Or perhaps it's that he Does understand it, but has as little Respect for it, and what it Says, as the guy currently in office that we all love to hate?

They are ALL TRASH.  They are ALL WORTHLESS.  They should ALL Be OUT of office - ANY office.

AGREED!

Unfortunately, it looks like the system's been broken for over 30 years, and no votes will be counted.

I'm not sure how you fix that, with United States Attorneys picked for their "Political Reliability" and not their Honor or Integrity.

I think votes, are just votes of confidence in an untrustworthy system.
