one think persecution is not a new thing.... it has been around as long as Mankind has existed and is part of the 'nature of the beast'. one does not condone that but one does accept that it does exist and without doubt, will continue to exist.
Folks can and do however, fight this 'need'?? by some to persecute others where ever it is found, to the best of each person's ability. This need to persecute occurs or appears to occur, where ever someone with power looks (or where there are enough people gather around a shared opinion to look), down the nose at another person (s) who is 'different' or doesnot 'fit in' and then takes action because through the power of 'position' or 'numbers', they can.
As a species, we humans will continue to distrust and condemn, that which we donot understand and therefore fear. As one think someone else has said, we fight that through education and one think, by remaining steadfast to what we believe in the face of such adversity.

unfortunately, people fear what they do not, or are not capable of fully comprehending. Many do not wish to face the different aspects of the multitude of lifestyles that abound. It is so much easier to just assume and label something as -bad- or -unhealthy- so the person doesnt have to deal with the myriad emotions and, very likely, a part of themselves hidden deep within that they have let societial hangups and perceptions to snuff out almost like a flame to a candle.

I grew up in a highly conservative religious family, on the outside it was the first class wealthy life outsiders envied... but beyond outside eyes, I grew up highly abused, physically, mentally, sexually and yet too fearful to tell because the main thing was I was told I would be put back into foster care or adoption again, Told I was a disgrace, worthless, trash.. etc... yet these were highly respectable people publically. There were several, though, that knew well what couldnt be hidden, the bruises, the withdrawl, the hatred of self and esteem so low I couldnt even lift my gaze to any in fear, scars still show on my flesh, I had reached out to a few at different times while growing up... nothing was done...

why?

It is easier to believe in the appearance of what society fills us with for the image of the right type of living/lifestyle/family

The public fears what it doesnt want to believe exsists. Look back over the generations, the Marches, the fights for rights for various types, the homosexuals, the trans and so many others, How many have been attacked, beaten, arrested, and yes even killed due to societial prejudices that run rampid... How many, here even, are open about their lifestyle and extremties of such to another that isnt within the lifestyle....

Sadly the fact a house was raided doesnt startle me, traffic in and out if there are many guests or visitors, perhaps glimpses caught of fetish style dress, or even tools of the trade such as a whip or shackles, and the ease of lodging anonymous police complaints from anything form wolf cries of someone -has- to be being abused with what has been seen, to too much traffic just -know- are doing, selling, producing illegal drugs or similar.

I know I rather rambled, but the uneducation of society due to the ease of blinders on anyone that doesn't wish to accept another lifestyle that may differ from what one considers the -norm- to be is a pet trigger to my disgust at what society has come to reveal with its various bs.

I think people just need a better idea of what is really going on.

Have you noticed that whenever the lifestyle is shown on TV, it is almost always some leather clad Domme beating on some fat naked guy in chains. You almost never see a femsub, and even then it is always in good taste, or the femsub is a real victim of an abusive Dom, never the subject of a loving relationship.

I think people are afraid that admitting that there are women who want to give up control of their lives to partners that they trust, would someone undermine the entire women's movement. "How can women be considered equals if they are willing to subjigate themselves so easily!" would be their argument.
But it is quite alright to show some middle aged corperate executive in a cage being called a "bad boy", because that is what BDSM is really about, right?

It's my opinion that if the media started portraying the lifestyle's loving side as much as it does its seamy side, then maybe it would start being more publicly accepted.

The country moves in cycles between conservatism and liberalism. You institute prohibition, you end up with the flappers. You institute the McCarthy hearings, you get hippies. You have hippies, you end up with yuppies. Now we have NeoCons and the noose is tightening. Eventually enough people will tire of the discomfort and the pendulum will swing the other way. The Sword of Damocles is above the current power structure, and the hair is frayed.

while previous attempts at stifling rights have come & gone, this is the first time that basic human rights (bills of such) and the constituion are being changed since they took effect. they seemed to have worked pretty well for 100 plus years, but now they are being manipulated by fundamentalists. aren't we at war over other certain fundamentalists? whether one is christian, muslim, pagan, or any other belief system, being fundamentalistic and thinking you are the only right way and you will push your beliefs on others and enact legislation that will effect the future lives of an entire country is just wrong. the patriot act is far too broad. too many things are being pushed through as laws that will change the way this county has been run since it began. scary? you bet.

Just to take this sentence in isolation. Yes, I would. Your slave would, by remaining your slave, have given you implicit permission to do so. It may even have been that your slave was complicit in this kind of treatment. But I believe it is incumbent on a Dom to be very aware of his slave's mental state, and to have the sense to realise when a deep submission has crossed the line into mental illness.

One of the requirements of being a good Dom, I believe.

I was perplexed with this post, which appeared to be a radical reaction until the penny dropped, and I remembered that voting is not compulsory in the USA. I find this strange and am curious why it is not mandatory to vote as all over the age of 18 are required by law in Australia to vote in State and Federal Elections.

I’d expand on what brightspot has said and strongly recommend that people need to be educated on all the options and what each political group is doing as well as other organizations who are able to affect your life. It is easy to have a winging session with friends. It take effort and courage to try to do something to help make a better society in which to live. The field is wide open for anyone who wants to do something to help….

Thankyou brightspot for posting something, which kicked my arse into doing a few things, which I had been putting off.

Actually, I like it the way it is here for one good reason. As a compulsive voter, I show up on the lists.

That way, when I make a request to my elected representative, one of his minions leafs (well, now-a-days scans) the voting lists and makes a little note "This guy has voted in every election since 1963."

It does make a difference.

They may not know how I voted (of course I haven't read the entire Patriot Act, maybe that's changed) but they know I've voted in the past and are likely to in the future so I'm mildly dangerous when compared with someone who doesn't bother.

Doesn't help much getting the boys out of Iraq, but it does have an effect when I near a sidewalk repaired.

this is the part that cannot be overstressed. especially here with all of our special initiative elections, you've got to read the real print (down to the fine part) and educate yourself about what you're really voting on. too many just go with what's on tv or the first few words instead of finding out what is really in the wording.

same goes for electing officials; see what their record is and what and how they've participated and/or voted in the past. what have they done in their community/state/federal position(s). we need to take our voting more serious and do it informed.

i wasnt really meaning to judge people that dont understand..more coming from the perspective of....why people are so interested in whats happening in other peoples backyards. What is the driving force behind that?..but i do understand what your saying.
Like there are lots of things i dont understand..and i would freely admit my ignorance and inferiority if you like, to someones knowledge who does understand. Doesnt make me less really..just less knowledgeable, more ignorant..thats perfectly ok...but the question is...where is that kinda consciousness coming from? What is motivating it? i find it totally bizarre how people make other peoples sex life and private lives their business.

ive got a personal issue with this..ugh. i had my involvement with bdsm used in a very large court case some years ago, it was basically used as legal blackmail..and the only power it had..were peoples judgements..yet that power was great indeed.
