cyberdude611 -> What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 2:20:26 PM)

Im not trying to bash anyone but what exactly is an undecided voter? I mean how long has this election been going on in the news? 2 years? How many speeches have their been? How many political ads have their been? How can anyone possibly be "undecided?"

Im not talking about independants and "swing voters." But they always talk about how some people dont make up their minds until they are in the voting booth. I just cant make sense of that logic. If you are making an instant decision like that, how do you know you are making the right decision?

I agree with what Winston Churchill. He once said talking to the average voter for five-minutes is the best arguement against democracy.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 3:12:10 PM)

Well we don't have a democracy for exactly that reason.  We have a republic because the founders were scared shitless of mob rule.  If you want a good historical example of mob rule, look no further than the French Revolution.

On undecided voters, it's people that vote but don't pay a great deal of attention to politics.  I don't find any fault in that.  I don't know who you hang out with, but I talk to a wide range of folks everyday.  Most people just don't care about politics.  Honestly, most people don't want to be bothered with politics after they get off work.  From their finances to their kid's, they have other worries.  I understand that, and I understand why they are undecided.  I am not that happy with the choices we have this year.  I am essentially voting for what I see as the lesser evil.

subtee -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 3:17:53 PM)

The ones who will decide the election.

~shudder~

kittinSol -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 3:19:11 PM)

Actually the French revolution was very much a bourgeois revolution - mob rule, not so much. In fact, look at what it was followed by: a bloody Empire! With a little Emperor! Even worse than a king.

Back to your regular blah blah blah...

sub4hire -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 3:33:50 PM)

I am an undecided voter.  However my mind is also made up before I get into the booth.

It is hard for the normal person to choose.  That is if you don't just go on speeches and bashing.  If you want facts, that means you have to actually research the candidates.  Ads bash as well...so for you to make a wise decision you have to throw them out as well.

Which means looking at senate records.  Personal history.  Among other factors.  It takes some time.  Everybody wants a person in office who is going to most match their views.
Unfortunately those people usually don't run for office.

fearghus -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 3:48:59 PM)

I am undecided.

It takes so long because one keeps hoping that one candidate or another will actually SAY something.  So far, not-so-good.

But, I am narrowing it down.  I have eliminated the following candidates so far:
1) Obama - too socialist
2) McCain - his running mate is too neo-con.
3) Bob Barr (Libertarian) - its Bob Barr .... do I need another reason?
4) Ralph Nadar - too 'one trick pony'

Still consdiering Ron Paul, or maybe my cat.

kiyari -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 4:04:31 PM)

Someone who might prefer the option of: "None of the Above", perhaps?

Lessor of two weevils, and al that, yanno.

...as if one's 'vote' actually counts...

slaveboyforyou -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 4:04:32 PM)

Kittin, I don't think it was the bourgeois that stormed Bastille.  The bourgeouis were major instigators, but they couldn't have done it without the proles.  The idea that the proletariat could not make decisions on their own without the aid of the bourgeois or the aristocrats is wrong and really snooty.  As for the empire; mob rule causes chaos, chaos causes fear, and fear leads to extreme measures.....like Napoleon.

As for my "regular blah, blah, blah"......give me a break.  Despite our differences, I am always polite with you.  I don't see the need for crassness.  I'm not being a cunt, so please extend the same courtesy.

I am still undecided on who I will be voting for on the top ticket.  I know who I won't be voting for, but that is a different story.

There are a couple of candidates that I like, and am researching their proposals and how they will impact myself and the country.  I am also waiting to see how the current financial situation plays out and if it changes those proposals.

On some of the local politicians it may be a decision I don't make until I am standing with the ballot in front of me.  The point at which I must make that final and weighted decision.  How is that a bad thing?  As opposed to locking my feet into the stirrups and riding head long into the battle without weighing my options and who's leadership I trust. caitlyn -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 4:43:50 PM)

I'm remaining undecided until after the debates, at which time I will weigh the options and make a choice. I feel this is important, because as a supporter of one party, I think it makes sense to give the other side an unfiltered chance to make their viewpoints known.

Aynne88 -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 4:49:12 PM)

Well then if you are waiting for the debates you will have to wait for McCain to grow a pair and show up. [8|]

Slaveboy,

Not to speak for kittin, but as an observer I read her post to mean in general to all of us back to the blah blah blah of the forums, not you personally. Of course she will correct me if I am wrong, but I really did see it that way.[&:]

That response is exactly the reason I intend to wait to and hear what the candidates have to say. [;)]

Fwiw, I read it that way too.

DesFIP -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 5:37:39 PM)

I'm undecided. I don't like either of them. But I have never not voted and I hope this isn't my first time.

Shit, a mixup - I was actually making fun of myself with the 'back to the regular schedule' allusion. I've always enjoyed the courtesy of our exchanges too: never crossed my mind to try to offend you. Sorry if that's how it came across [&o].

I like Ron Paul too--although I haven't yet met your cat.

After Bush and his followers have given our rights and now our investment banks to the Federal Government, I think we need to take a hard new look at just who's "Socialist."

Meanwhile, the more Socialist nations are kicking our butts. Maybe we need to look at that too.

corysub -> RE: What exactly is an "undecided voter?" (9/24/2008 6:50:40 PM)

I guess "undecided" voters don't know they are "undecided".  They are not thinking about the daily comments from the candidates, and  are probably spending too much of their waking time trying to make a living.  Many of us here are "political junkies", addicted to the political news, watch
all the left and right wing of the media on TV, listen to them in the car in the morning and coming home at night.  We tend to forget that there is a greater population of people that are just focused on putting bread on the table, and not whether McCain or Obama is going to appear 20 miles away and has to be seen.  These ARE he people, however, that swing elections, and that' why polls, particularly this year, are not as important as some in the media make them out.

i'm undecided as well, and while ron doesn't thrill me any more than the others, i am quite interested in your cats name when it comes down to a possible write in. [:D]

~FR

I have nothing against undecided voters, although, as my comment suggests, it troubles me that they are the folks who will decide the election. I have no doubt that they will.

What is troubling is to hear that it's too hard or [the candidates] don't say anything or you have to research. I don't know of other reasons to have not decided thus far, except for Thadius, and sorry, your championing of Sarah Palin really leaves your comment that you are undecided disingenuous, at least to me.

I can't understand how anyone who intends to vote cannot have any idea of who they will vote for. It's not as if we're comparing Braeburns to Golden Delicious. They are pretty diametrically opposed and it is not NOT difficult to learn or understand what they say they will do. We have the Internets, it's all over the radio, TV, the newspaper. I don't accept, sorry, that it's too much of a burden to learn about the candidates, their policies and how they differ. They do. A lot.
