Hence there will never be a meeting of the minds between "liberals" and "conservatives."

Look at the results of this poll.

It still astonishes me how such a failed leadership garners so much loyalty and devotion.

Never underestimate the power of the simple answer.

That it's wrong is irrelevant.

I notice the majority of independents are in favour of Obama on all issues. The rest is predictable and always happens with the party faithful.

In the UK the only party pushing for proportional representation are the liberal democrats because they know a conservative is never going to vote for Labour as their second choice and vice versa.

Thank you, cloudboy. This confirms what I suspected last night... the Independent viewers were swayed by Obama.

There's hope.

Yes.  The "independents" who texted or logged on to register a vote.  Are you aware who the single largest group of voters in the US are, and how likely they are to text anything?  Or even to own a computer?

What impact debate #1 had will take several days to show up.

Paranoid, isn't it just as likely many republican voters are pretending to be independents?

Is this what is known as the grey vote i.e. those that have no idea what modern technology is, won't have a clue what is going on in the world via such modern technology and therefore are in the best place to decide who should be the next President?
I can see why things aren’t working out so well for the US of late if this is the system in place and the ones who really hold the power.

Such polls just aren't predictive.

We don't have a race for president---we have 51 (including District of Columbia) separate races, all of which are winner take all (at least in theory, but the electors tend to respect this, with rare exception (one voted for Reagan in 1976. Yes, 1976.)

So especially in such a tight race (I don't know where people are getting this 18% undecided number I've seen in other threads----seems to be 46% McCain, 46% Obama), given that in this system a minority of voters can elect a president if they get a majority of electoral votes, it's anyone's race.

From here, it's voter turnout and electoral math.

Uh, there are two states that are not winner take all - Nebraska and Maine.

Fair enough.

Doesn't change the point, however.

But it does change the electoral math equation. If you don't know the exceptional cases, you can't account for them.

As you wish.

Nebraska and Maine just don't have enough votes to change the original point, that this is several separate elections. In a severely close race, yes its possible Nebraska and Maine could make the difference. Not likely, but possible.

The point was why relying on polls is probably not an effective predictor. If you feel this changes the point, then go ahead and trust the polls.

And yet, online polling is used for far, far bigger votes... say, on "American Idol." and it seems quite accurate...

If I were putting money on this debates' "winner"... I'd say it was a tie.

Well I'm independent and I was swayed by Obama.  Are you saying he was just ACTING sincere, informed and reasonable?

Not sure if you meant this to be in response to me.

I do think he's sincere, informed, and reasonable. That's why I'm voting for him.

I'm glad the debate was able to demonstrate this, and thus, seems I was too hasty in proclaiming them just an exercise.

Thanks!

Tim

Hmmmmmm... I'd call that pretty accurate.  None of them are any more than good actors with a game face for public consumption.

I  believe that Obama - like his opponent McCain - has good speech writers, and has learned how to read from a teleprompter - and no doubt both of them went over scripted answers to specific Types of questions with their staffs in order to prepare answers that they collectively thought were what folks would "want" to hear.

I wouldn't say that Either of them was Actually sincere or reasonable - they simply both know how to work a crowd.  Different crowds, obviously, but both know how to work "a" crowd.

This isn't to say that McCain is better - he's patently NOT.  He's another good actor with talented speech writers on his staff.

Both of them are Satan's younger brothers.

Thank the gods that I've never been one to go along with the crowd simply because it was Popular.   I have yet to be "swayed" by Either of the major parties towards anything except entertaining thoughts of extreme violence against Washington.

So how would you run for President? Wouldn't you need to do essentially this?
