Good Lord, I forgot to mention Jerry Reed. I was born in '75. I remember Smokey and the Bandit and the CB craze. My father gave out CBs on Christmas to all my relatives. We had one in our station wagon. I forget the handle my dad and mom used. Thanks Jerry Reed and Burt Reynolds.

I use to have a CB in the early to mid 80's when I lived in Baltimore. CB's were pretty big there and there were several active channels. We use to have get togethers etc - was a lot of fun.

So thinking of CB - I always loved truckers music. The 70's stuff. My dad worked around 18wheelers so I got a lot of exposure to them, probably fed that love.

I knew, probably still know every word to Convoy. BTW: Convoy came out the year I was born in 74 so I learned it later on. Also one of my favorite songs was White Knight.

Here is a long version of White Knight - which I frankly hadn't heard before today -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krXkSQg8DDo
This is the version I remember - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3178rR26J84&feature=related

As for more recent music - I never really got in to the classic country. But I'll throw some suggestions of songs I like....

Course you can never go wrong with George Strait. I won't bother finding in of his songs as most of them are all known and I pretty much like them all. I will also say I loved Pure Country as well as the entire soundtrack.

Paul Overstreet: Seeing my father in me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcPV0xPHQXA
Cris Ledoux: Western Skies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZG6ELD-TiC4
Keith Whitley & Earl Thomas Conley: Brotherly Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYTz1JadrPU
John Michael Montgomery: A Great Memory (couldn't find this so enjoy this video instead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q7jtLRjxzI )
Reba McEntire & Vince Gill: The Heart Won't Lie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49cNl-73zh8
Billy Dean: Somewhere in my broken heart http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkoL-9fSzsg

Those are some good examples - as a final farewell watch this video.... It always gives me a great chuckle :)

Neal McCoy - Billy's got his beer goggles on - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymOGM3d1cMU

Oh I forgot to mention one that should have topped my list. The song was my wife and my song when we got married and held special meaning while we started our life in cramped apartments.

SB, if you knew David Allen Coe's style before he got big, you might cross him off the list. Let me put it this way, look for a song called If That Ain't Country. The N word is in there. I don't know how much they had to whip his ass to get him to stop, but if you heard his older stuff you might not like it at all. Very racist and incindiary. Of course I like it. I can send you some if you like. Perhaps it is better you don't know.

Like me with Leonard Skynard, I wrote them off because of certain lyrics. Mainly the song Saturday Night Special. They sing "why don't we dump them (the guns) people, to the bottom of the sea, before some ol fool comes around here, wanna shoot either you or me". That was it. There is no Skynard in my house and there never will be because of that, and to think I used to damn near sing it ! That's a sellout. Perhaps I shouldn't be so harsh, maybe I am the old fool and if anyone I want to shoot took that to heart, I don't have to worry about them shooting back. And you don't know harsh, I took pristeen Skynard LPs and laid them at my door and insisted that people wipe their shoes on it before LEAVING, not entering.

David Allen Coe is not offensive to me, but there are a few things, he didn't write The Perfect Country Song, and doesn't claim to have. His version had an extra verse at the end.

I was drunk,
The day my Mom got out of prison,
And I went to pick her up in the rain,
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck,
She got run over by a dammned ol train

David Allen Coe's real claim to fam IMO was The Ride.

Well I thumbing from Montgomery,
Had my guitar on my back.......
...................
You don't have to call me mister mister,
The whole world calls me Hank

Song has also been called The Ghost Of Hank Williams.

I can't say I have any favorite artists, Should've been a cowboy, if I read that right it's Travis Tritt. Little Man, I think it's Alan Jackson.

I never idolized, even a little bit. I judge the product. I like Old Red which is Blake Shelton, and I have a couple of Steve Earle pieces I like. I also have a few Hank Williams the third songs like Missippi Mud, which was before he took on the name Kid Rock. (please do not start that argument, you will NEVER convince me he is not because of what I have seen). Also from Hank 3, Put The Dick Back In Dixie And The Cunt Back In Country.

I am the type who does not remember actors' names in a movie no matter how much I liked it. I especially like Aaron Tippin's I Got It Honest. There are a few I don't even know who did.

In that respect I am terrible on names. It caused me trouble when I was downloading my library, which is extensive, not so much in volume but in scope. It causes me trouble now when I go to play SOMETHING I HAVE. I literally have to go to Google to find out who did it because my library is arrainged by artist.

OK, one I did remember, Bellamy Bros. - Let Your Love Flow. Playing right now.

So with me it is not the artist, it is the song. I play guitar and am learning piano slow but sure, and I don't take praise well. I don't need applause, I don't need instant gratification. It is nice though, when next week someone asks me to play. Maybe it's just how I am and I don't dish out what I don't want to take. Appreciate the music, not me. Anyone can do this.

And that is pretty true because most of these "stars" do not write their own music.

I also like many pieces by Buddy Holly, Fifth Dimension, Madonna and Judas Priest. I also dislike many cuts, and I was in the forefront of taping when I was younger. I used to have a reel to reel, and then I went on to expensive cassette decks, not the most expensive, but good ones, like three headers. You have any idea how expensive a three head cassette deck was back in the day ? The upside was you could adjust the bias and EQ so it sounded the best, because in tape monitor you were actually listening to the recording. Then when Dolby HX came out I had to have it.

I am no stranger to music, but I have to admit I don't know who did what. With my record, when I got P2P it's easy to see why my harddrive is full. But even though I categorized it, renamed it and set it in the proper alphabetic directory for my toolbar to work, I don't remember artists' names. I meant what I said, I literally have to go to Google to find something on my own harddrive.

I agree pretty much with all mentioned here, in fact I listened to a Patsy Cline piece earlier, the only thing I go against is Skynerd. That is not because of lack of skill or talent, it is because of the words of one of their most popular songs. If the words of Saturday Night Special are their opinion, I want nothing to do with them. If they sang that when it goes against everything but just did it for the money I want nothing to do with them.

Sorry to the Skynerd fans, but listen very closely to the words of Saturday Night Special before even talking to me about it.

There are other artists banned from my computer and in fact my home, but yall are talking country. I told you about me and Skynerd because they can be considered country. The others have nothing to do with this.

Back to rock mode, it is Friday night you know !.

The Nitty Gritty Dirtband song I was talking about is "Fishing in the Dark". >:D

And Termyn8tor, "Should've Been A Cowboy" is one of Toby Keith's, not Travis Tritt. :P But thanks for reminding me about Blake Shelton - he's got some awesome music! Also, I like a lot of Rascal Flatts' stuff. (Whoo for random memory.)

writer, thanks for the heads up on that. Most of my music is downloaded and some of it is misnamed. One of these days I want to clean that up, but haven't figured out how to get all the info at once and just do it. In fact I have a huge Alan Jackson directory and I am sure that perhaps ½ the songs in it are somebody else.

One of the favorite pieces I have, and I mean people who hear it not just me, over here is a hillbilly version of Gin And Juice, a Snoop Dog cover, but very good. I have it under Alan Jackson but have recently found out it is The Gourds.

A couple more that didn't get mentioned:  Mary Chapin Carpenter, and the best Saturday night TV in 1982, Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters.  Irlene couldn't sing, but she looked good, so they let her play the drums, lol.  Wayland Flowers and Madam were on with them every week, too.  Good stuff.

I got here late so alot of my faves have already been mentioned (Waylon Jennings, Lyle Lovett, Jerry Jeff Walker, Townes Van Zandt, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle for starters).  However, I have a few to add to my list.  As others have said, I love "X Country" on XM radio and what is considered Alt Country or Americana.  I also enjoy a little souped-up bluegrass along with some twang.  So....if you don't know these following artists, educate yourselves:

Gillian Welch (the voice of an angel!)             http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7knB3VtAqY

Billy Joe Shaver (and his son, Eddy)              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdYzVFClHyg

I love the honky tonk music like Hank Jr, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash.
Some of the later ones I like are Randy Travis, Ricky Van Shelton,  and I am trying to think about the one who sings the "Long Black Train.  We have both cds of his, but I cannot for the life of me remember who he is.  He is hot.
Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn to name a few of the ladies.
I do not like contemporary music. I like traditional. I do not like the ghost whispering stuff.

This is a trick question right?
I mean, come on, "favorite" and "country artist" in the same question.
That would insinuate that there were good country artists, and that I favored one cow patty kicker of the rest.
