GE is one of the companies calling for Congress to pass a financial rescue package. Warren Buffet has weighed in, adding to his new stake in Goldman Sacs.

From the New York Times:

Other than... when the economy recovers, Mr. Buffet will be sitting very pretty.  (So nice that a man like him, starting out with only a few billion in his pocket, can become a success in America... it's a regular Horatio Algier story!)

So here's a second thought that I have on this:

How come it's OK, even laudable that Buffet can invest his money like this, and probably make a profit, shoring up the capital of a failing investment firm... but when the US government does the same thing, on behalf of Joe Q. Taxpayer, for the entire system (because they can) they should suddenly be hung from the highest yardarm?

just askin'...

Yep. And he has earned every dime, he is not a paper shuffler, he makes sure an investment is sound and will be sound for quite some time. Plus the government never ask to use my money. Hence the yardarm

Buffet didn't start out with a few billion in his pocket.  He came from pretty humble beginnings.

I think he actually started with like a pinball machine he went in with some friends when he was a kid, bought his first stock when he was 17

It was my understanding that Warren Buffett started with $300.

GE also makes wind generators ...the huge ones for windfarms, for example.

You know, producing power that doesn't use foreign oil.

It is a good thing.

Cause he's a private investor.

The government getting involved is called "socialism". See Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to understand how that can go wrong.

East Germany called, they want their government back.

Oh nice! Warren Buffet buys stock in G.E. and gets a 10% dividend plus warrants to buy more stock at anytime in the next 5 years for $22.50.
And what does *our government* want to buy?
Worthless bundles of bankrupt mortgage fixtures!
Shouldn't *our congress* be following Buffet or at least using that money to build bridges and roads?
See Uncle Nasty's thread!

I have said the same thing several times.  You are preaching to the choir.

Mr. Buffet is one hell of an investor, I'll give you that!

GE bought Buffet's cred and that goes a long way. Just buy a mutual fund that has a lot of Bershire-Hathaway stock and you will be fine through this crisis. It will be all be over in a couple of years and things will be a little different. We will all drive less, eat at home more, have a vegetable garden and buy less "stuff". Maybe that is not such a bad thing. Maybe our lives will be richer for this "financial crisis".

Well yes, they also make airplane engines, compact florescent light bulbs and railroad locomotives. I don't think they make nuclear bombs, but who every makes those Meals Ready to Eat for the military, is truly a war-driving enterprise.

Frankly, if we didn't insist on driving and flying every dang where, our politicos wouldn't see a need to go to war to protect the oil to get our votes. If you don't see it clearly now, we went to war to get a foothold to protect the oil that keeps us financially afloat. We, not the government, need to rein in our energy use and invest in solar panels. Though, it is far more costly than you might expect. Personally, the solar system that cools my small home for 5 hours a day in the summer cost $40,000, though it will pay for itself in 18.7 years, that is a lot of cash to tie up.
