She didnt suck as badly as Qayle did. But a puppet cant really fail if she relies on her strings to save her.

True, but the winking, the 'gosh darn its' and  the 'you betchas' made me want to puke a little. It's bad enough to be a populist, but to patronise the electorate that much and talk to them like they're a bunch of retards was seriously off the mark.

Well, yannow...look who we've been dealing with for the past 8 yrs. Perhaps an IQ test is in order. im not sure which advisor told her to wink...but someone clearly did. i couldnt really puke this early...went to bed before the debates and had to watch them this am...too early to really wretch.
Personally i found myself drifting during the debate cuz early on i had a fleeting thought about what a good DaddyDom Biden makes and from there things went south quickly for me. Hes no Bill but hes right up there on my short list.

As for Palin's performance, i think we all know that it was well written and clearly rehearsed. im glad she didnt totally tank...i would have felt badly. i long for the days of real debates and non-televised political brawls...i was born in the wrong time. Thats why i get involved locally...in case there is a real exchange of ideas....its really exciting to see one in person.

I find this sentiment quite disgusting.  All I can say is, "don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out."

Since you find it "disgusting", which is a pretty harsh statement, some elaboration might be helpful.

The debate is so restricted it isn't really a debate. It was boring.

Yes, it was boring. How did you consider it restricted?

While I like Obama and Biden, I do have to agree with this...it was a play to the people who are single parents and it was low...I wasnt at all impressed with that...and kind of eye rolled at him for being dramatic.

I have to disagree. Palin kept on playing the saintly mom card, as if Biden was out of touch with reality. I think he had enough of these implications, and that he just let her know he was aware of the difficulties of parenthood, especially in his own personal circumstances: his wife did die with their daughter in a horrific car crash.

I can see how that would be seen.  Thats something to think about for sure.

i think that the hits that Palin took in reference to her dealing with her own families challenges relating to special needs children in the press, prior to the debates were unfair and that the public needed to be reminded of the tragedy that Biden had to deal with in the deaths in his family. Being a single parent is hard enough, but a grieving one? i can not imagine the strength that takes. i hope i never have to know.
There is nothing more dramatic in a persons life than a problem of such magnitude within your own family...a challenged child...or the death of one....Biden's physical and emotional reaction to having to reference his significant losses in life on national television were reasonable.

Don't know if this was what he was referring to, but the McCain camp campaigned for, and received, a modified debate format that was to be more structured than the presidential debates with less spontaneous give-and-take between the candidates.  Obviously to keep Sarah on message and limit her usual ramblings.

TheHeretic -> RE: So what did you think of the debate? (10/3/2008 6:50:21 AM)

How about, "revolting," RML?  That was the first word I typed, and then went back.  "Vile?"  "The words of a spoiled brat who is going to take the ball and go home?"

'Country' ranks well above 'party' in my values hierarchy.  I don't wonder about the intelligence and basic worth of people who make comments like this.  I'm completely convinced.

       I'll add, "don't come back."

The rules don't really allow the participants to engage with each other and ask pertinent questions and there is no follow through. It was quite obvious Palin was eating up time by talking about anything but policy but there appear to be no mechanism or demand on her to answer the question. Why doesn't the moderator stop a participant when they wonder off eating up time by telling them they are avoiding the issue and to please stick to the question. If they were two boxers last night, the audience would have walked out because neither were even trying to land a punch and even if they were, the referee was standing inbetween them.

I can agree with you about taking the ball and going home, if moving to Canada if Obama loses was a serious comment, because I think it was meant as a joke.  Regardless, why would it upset you to the point you think it is revolting and vile?  Seems a little over the top.

bipolarber -> RE: So what did you think of the debate? (10/3/2008 7:10:53 AM)

I think Palin set the bar so low for herself, that, the fact that she didn't totally blow it is considered a victory. Really, I was expecting a rambling, disjointed answer, similar to the Couric interview at any moment.

I was also pleasantly surprised that Biden kept himself in check. At several points, he could have turned on the republican poodle with his usual bulldog antics... but didn't.

As such, I think Biden came out looking far more presidential (should the worst happen) while Palin probably made a lot of people pause, with every "nookloor" and "Ja, you betcha!" comment.

As predeicted, all Joe had to do to win last night was keep his cool, and let Palin talk. And talk... and talk...

Apparently you missed all the news stories on it.
Here's a sample:

At the insistence of McCain, the VP debate will feature shorter question-and-answer sessions with limited time for the candidates to converse directly with each other. McCain advisors were concerned about Palin's limited debating experience.
McCain originally sought a strict Q&A format with no time for direct exchanges between the VP candidates so that Palin could present McCain's policies rather than discuss herself. Joe Biden is comfortable with any of the formats suggested.

Disgusting, revolting, vile -- each and all.  Reflects Obama's "Me, Myself and I" persona.  Anyone who takes ten or so minutes to do a little research will find out that the very first time Obama participated in a Senate committee hearing (at the invitation of John McCain no less) he pompously lectured the committee.  During the recent White House meeting called by President Bush regarding the $700B "bailout" bill Obama reportedly once again pompously lectured everyone.  Also noteworthy was Obama's failure to convince even one member of the Congressional Black Caucus to change their vote on the "bailout" bill.

"Country" also ranks well above 'party', and moreover 'self', in my values hierarchy.

McCain-Palin = "Country First"
Obama-Biden = "Party/Self First"

Thanks for defending my comment. im used to hearing comments like that and ignoring them as they are over the top and meant to be inflamatory. i tend to consider the source and move on...in this case, i moved past it...sorta.
i didnt see any other comments from that poster that had any substance, so i gave him the Palin wink and moved past it.
Btw...i dont want to take my ball and go home...i want to play on a more level playing field and am getting frustrated with the lack thereof.

Speaking from experience here Quick Draw Mcpaw;

I find that being articulate, straight forward, precise of purpose,
specifically focused and clearly honest in intent and delivery is
the best approach at communication using dignity and respect
when addressing a bunch of retards.

Throw in a whole lot of winks, "gosh darn it's", "you betchas",
and God forbid, puke, they tend to arch an eyebrow, smile at
each other and look at you like a bunch of electorates.

I know retards Quick Draw Mcpaw.
Retards are friends of mine.
You, Quick Draw Mcpaw,
don't know retards.

Seriously off the mark

Using fast reply........

Even though it does not matter, since I am quite comfortable that McCain has no chance now, I was curious about his health care plan.

Having worked in the health insurance industry and watching all the people that needed it most, get shoved out of having it by skyrocketing premiums when they actually started using it, AND being denied by any new company they applied to because of pre-existing conditions........I want to know how they expect individuals to even be able to purchase their own coverage. Here in Iowa, where we have so many self employed (farmers) that have to purchase it on their own, is a very painful subject.

As for premiums. When I was working in the business, it was nothing to meet a couple in their 50's with average health issues, paying $ 1,200.00 in premium a month. That was in 2000. I am sure it has increased dramatically, just like everything else.

Dnomyar -> RE: So what did you think of the debate? (10/3/2008 8:09:03 AM)

Did anyone watch Palins facial expressions. A few times I thought she was going to lose it. I like the way the Biden chided her about the Maverick thing. I think her political time in Alaska is getting short. Seems like the people there are getting fed up with her. If I were Obama I would cancel his other debates and just keep traveling around the country talking with the people.
