wandersalone -> online friends....can they ever be classed as real life friends? (10/3/2008 9:19:36 AM)

I know two women from another type of forum and both are coming out to stay with me and we will be going to see some bands together. I have never met them, never talked on the phone, we send emails all day and night to each other, we write letters and send postcards and gifts to each other.  I've known them for almost two years, I know about their pasts, their families, their jobs,
So anyway....all of this got me thinking, there are plenty of women here whom I think of as a friend, not as a net friend, but as a friend,.

What about the rest of you...do you consider some of the people here your net friends, your real friends, your friends or something else??

according to my landlord... NO.  your an acquantance...

really??? a friend is classified as someone who will be there for you through rough and good times... (its called love unconditional)

cant that be done over the internet???? and voice through telephone???

a friend hangs out with you....

wtf are chat rooms for and cam's?????

I don't think friendship should be classified by the method of delivery.  Even though Gwyn didn't make it to the party in Florida, I consider her every bit as much of a friend as the people who were able to be there.

I think it's what you share, not how you share it, that makes a friend.

If we are talking with each other we are friends.

I too believe that online friends can be your RL friends.  After I posted my "warning" to you in another thread, Wanders, I didn't realize how long you'd known them before inviting them into your home.  I chat w/some folks regularly here & if any of them visited DC, MD or VA, I wouldn't hesitate to invite them to stay w/me.  Well, I'd MORE than hesitate inviting the Clumsy One but all of the others are MORE than welcome!![:D]

my online friends are just that - online friends.  some of my online friends i'm close to but not that close in my inner circle.  on the other hand, my bffs are the ones who reside in my inner circle.  i see and meet them in real life for coffee or dinner to a fun night on the town.

purepleasure -> RE: online friends....can they ever be classed as real life friends? (10/3/2008 10:25:13 AM)

There are a few here that I consider to be RL friends.  Most are acquaintences or online only friends.

nursygirl -> RE: online friends....can they ever be classed as real life friends? (10/3/2008 10:58:16 AM)

I use to consider people as simply online acquaintances, but after a life-threatening medical crisis last week and the concern showed by these "acquaintances", not to mention the phone call from Australia,  those people are forever in my heart as friends.

An on-line friendship is as real as a R/L one.  People do not have to meet face to face to share thoughts, joys, disappointments, and experiences.  I found out today that not everyone believes this, but I still do.

SteelofUtah -> RE: online friends....can they ever be classed as real life friends? (10/3/2008 11:16:21 AM)

I have yet to meet any of the people coming across the country for my birthday but I count them all as friends and some I count as VERY Close Friends.

Friend is a relative term it is how you decide it is.

Steel, I really wanted to come to your party but I'm afraid I used up most of my time visiting that crazy Flying Monkey/Angel in Aug., so now I have to start accumulating my vacation hours again :((

**Eta, I would LOVE to take your spankings for you & it's been so long for me it'd be like being a Virgin....I mean, uh, I'm a Virgin, never been spanked. Does it hurt much**?? [8|]

I would say you are "pen pals", when you meet in real time, you may/may not become "friends"

With the exception of one person.....Not so much so for me. I simply haven't the time to spend cultivating a serious friendship. However, she and I talk on the phone fairly often now also so it isn't just "online".

Still, I do think there is a difference between any sort of long distance relationship where the primary contact is via net or phone versus someone you spend physical time with. I won't argue that one is more valid that the other, just different in many ways. I know what I prefer but to each their own.

LadyEllen -> RE: online friends....can they ever be classed as real life friends? (10/3/2008 11:36:16 AM)

Visiting Germany and dealing with Germans taught me something about friends.

Friends are people who are there for you - will drop everything to help you out and do things for you that only your parents or close family might otherwise do - and you are there for them and do the same in return.

After friends there are "mates" as we say in Britain - people you hang round with and go places and do things with but it doesnt go much further than that.

After mates there are acquaintances - people you know to talk to

We're doing well in this world if we find just one friend; usually its our husband, wife or life partner. To have more than one friend one has to be very lucky...... but then its not just a matter of luck - its about being ready, able and willing to offer friendship and come across someone else ready, able and willing to offer it in return.

I count myself extremely fortunate to have three friends - two of whom are CM Members I wouldnt have met without CM.
I count myself extremely fortunate to have a dozen mates - six of whom are CM Members I wouldnt have met without CM.
I count myself extremely fortunate to have hundreds of acquaintances, here and elsewhere

And I count myself extremely fortunate to have the opportunity from time to time, to turn acquaintances into mates and mates into friends.

Absolutely.  One of my closest, dearest friends is someone I haven't had the pleasure of meeting in real life (yet [;)]).
I am hoping that her Master/Husband will allow a meeting to take place at some point in the future.

Web cams and voice chat go a long way when "meeting" people online.

Friends are just that...friends. Online or sitting in my kitchen, they are still friends.

sunshinemiss -> RE: online friends....can they ever be classed as real life friends? (10/3/2008 12:05:27 PM)

People are people.  The way we interact is irrelevant.  Friendships come into our lives in many ways.  Why not consider these friendships?

Friendships here are by definition, like everywhere else, dependent on the caliber of person.

well wishes,
sunshine (who sent you a postcard wootie woot)

beargonewild -> RE: online friends....can they ever be classed as real life friends? (10/3/2008 12:12:23 PM)

wanders, I look upon friendship as something which appears in a variety of disguises. Friendship with a person who you've known since childhood. Friends you make from being a penpal whom you may or may not have actually met. There's friendship with another who you may see once a year or even less. There is also having a friendship with people who you've gotten to know online, chatting over the phone, knowing that eventually you may meet.
There are many people online I have gotten to know over the years and I do consider them friend, the only difference is we haven't met yet we still developed a closeness through wanting to associate with each other even if it's via an electronic medium. I see friendship occurring at various levels of closeness and compatibility, each is unique in it's own way though it's still friendship.
