I prefer to think of it as reasonable risk avoidance.

.... If a masochist orgasms from being whipped, that's sexual even without direct genital contact or penetration. If being humiliated gets a male sub harder than a tree trunk, that's sexual. Et cetera.

and what is it when these sexual responses are things that don't happen for the individuals involved?

amazing as it is for some to understand... there is not always a sexual response or motivation to do what it is we do.

For me sex is a surrealist dream of physical contact and pleasurable thought.
To paraphrase Crowley, sure he wouldn't mind, Any act or thought performed with a sexual intent becomes a sexual act in itself. There are different spheres of sexual activity, but they all stem from sensuality and pleasurable association.

I agree with GreedyTop!

sex, to me, is anything that is erotically charged.. whether or not theres penetration....or any overtly sexual contact

Don't get me wrong Rover, I love wolverines, I really do, but, and I'm just guessing here, that most men would not want their cocks in a wolverine's mouth, expecially a rabid one.  Or a badger for that matter.

Well, I dunno... the male wolverines and badgers seem to like it just fine.  Now I'm not suggesting that I'd be the first to try it, mind you.  I'll wait for the reports to roll in.

You're a wise man, Rover.  Better a sissy intact than a hero with a gnawed off penis.

I agree with this 100%, even if I don't completely understand it.

I had a relationship a few years back that lasted for a short time, only about 6 months. It ended for reasons that are irrelevant to the point.  Anyway, I was deeply submissive to him and felt a particular bond with him, yet there was no sex involved, and no necessary desire for it either.

I served him in ways that were non-sexual.  And he would discipline me and whip me and things of that nature, and I didn't get turned on sexually by it at all.  It was more like some kind of a spiritual lift for me.  I really can't explain it,  and wouldn't even believe it if I had not experienced it first hand.  But I'm living breathing proof that there can be Ds, even BDSM, without sex or sexual arousal.
