Alas, I too, am no longer friendly with donuts.  But back when...

Warm apple fritters, the kind with nice chunks of apple in them
Chocolate eclairs (although I still make those for friends)
Glazed Old Fashioned

Fresh hot Krispy Kremes, once cold they aren't worth eating.
Fresh hot cider donuts from the farm stand right after they come out of the oven.
Otherwise a chocolate topped Boston cream filled, but that's definitely third choice.

It really all depends on who's making it.

The best doughnut I have ever tasted was from The Doughnut Plant here in NYC (and perhaps now they're across the nation? I dunno.) It was like Krispy Kreme only a million times better. Softer, fresher, tastier. They are expensive but worth it! There, I like the plain glazed or the chocolate glazed.

Krispy Kreme, like the plain or the chocolate glazed.

Dunkin' Doughnuts (and most other general doughnut places) I like a chocolate frosted.

And never can go wrong with a cruller.

The maple creme stick is a friend of mine.  I also like the little cake donut hole with the coconut coating.  Makes them look a bit hairy, I call them "Donads".

I also love the bar-shaped ones with maple icing on top but my favorite kind of all time are the really dense buttermilk bars with or without glaze....

Unfortunately I got sacked from the bakery when they found out how I was making the holes in the donuts.

I don't eat doughnuts too often, but when I do I love Shipley's chocolate glazed doughnuts, preferrably warm just out of the oven.

I try not to eat them.  They just don't seem to fill me up & I am hungrier when I have donuts.  I have tried the Krispy Kreme.  I really wasn't impressed, not one little bit.  I still can't figure out what about them would draw people to sit for an hour waiting to get into line for them when they open a new shop.

If I have to have a favorite donut place for donuts, it would be Dunkin Donuts, especially, the ones that are cream filled with chocolate on top of it.   Now, their coffee........well, I need to get coffee elsewhere.  Dunkin's donuts are all I would get there.
