ORIGINAL: sodsta Over the past two days I've been doing a bit of thinking. About fetish obviously, but more specifically about clothes. I went to the Barbican Xpo this weekend, which was awesome and full of pretty things and shiny people. I really do enjoy these fetish fair thingys, with their nifty toys and enjoyable performances and their wide, wide variety of kinky clothes. Everything is really interesting, whether or not I personally find it attractive or sexy, and there is such a wide variety of colours, styles, shapes, materials and accessories that it's really hard not to find yourself staring at certain items. One of the events that took place at the Xpo was a fetish fashion show. Models walking down the runway wearing items of clothing from shops that had stands set up around the venue. They were all rather striking, some more so than others, but the one thing that struck me was the abundance of rubber and latex. I think there were a grand total of 7 people in the show not wearing some sort of shiny plastic, out of about... 30 or so? Now, I've never been a fan of latex, rubber or PVC, but I hadn't realised just how un-sexy I found it until this weekend. The first 15 models out were all wearing shiny clothes, and some of the outfits looked pretty, but I was generally left feeling a bit 'meh' about it. It wasn't until the models wearing brocade corsets, tulle skirts and satin shawls came on that I realised how little the latex had been doing for me, though. And I don't mean that in a dirty, pervy way. Honest. ;) So I did a bit of thinking as we walked around all the clothing stalls. Most of them were, indeed, selling shiny things. Lots of people wearing shiny things, too. Shiny boots, shiny corsets, shiny skirts, shiny trousers, shiny stockings... lots of shiny. And while they caught my eye, they did little other than, well... be shiny. Well... for me, anyway. It's obvious latex and rubber is very popular in the fetish scene, and that's fair enough, but I find it kind of... I don't know. The only word I can think of really is "gimmicky", but that sounds really harsh and I don't think that's quite the right word, anyway. I mean, I can appreciate latex clothing, but I find I generally view it in the same way I view renaissance art. Some of it is pretty and eye-catching, but it's not really sexy. There was one outfit in the fashion show that I thought would have been amazingly sexy if it had been made of anything other than latex or rubber. It was a white blouse, a black under-bust corset, and a long, dark red pencil skirt. It looked very old school marm, actually. The cut was nice, the shape was lovely, but... the latex left me cold. If it had been a real, cloth blouse, a satin corset and a cotton skirt it would have been absolutely stunning. The latex-clad people at the fair caught my eye, but it was the people wearing the non-shiny fabrics that held it. I find this sexier than this I find this sexier than this I find this sexier than this And I find this sexier than this. I mean, that's a very visual thing, but I also don't like the smell or the feel of latex or rubber, either. Leather I am alright with, but only matt leather. I saw two pairs of shoes on one of the stalls today... they were exactly the same shoe; same shape, same cut, same height, same design... the only difference was that one was matt and the other was patent leather. I thought the matt shoes were much nicer. Anyway... that went on for longer than I thought it would. I actually wanted to use this post to ask people what clothes or materials appeal to them in a fetish-y context. Are you attracted or drawn to certain materials when you see them? Do you absolutely adore the way a certain fabric feels when you wear it? Are the clothes you choose to wear meant to make you feel a certain way or put you in a certain frame of mind? I'd be interested to know. :) quote:

I understand what you say overall about all these types of clothes..My problem is different...When i go to the Fetish store, there are many clothes too. But if i happen to generally find lots of female clothing highly refine, stylish and sexy, i think that for men, 90% of the available clothes are more simpler and often exaggerated like a caricature: masks; leather pants with an ass opening; vinyl men shorts(!); all in all, i find it sometimes hard to choose something i really like and am comfortable to wear as i would find myself sexy in it...I think that like for fashion in general, women benefit immensely on choice and variety of style. I really think some men do look ridiculous in their outfits sometimes...I want to feel as sexy and attractive as when i wear evening city clothes..I think the fetish industry should try to improve the fashion for men..You don't always feel at ease wearing a collar or a ball-contraption, even if it defines your status in the BDSM community...Does it always has to be that obvious a label for men? Women can wear about anything...They become incredibly sexy (that's normal as they are so much more attractive than men), but i would enjoy it immensely if there would be more choice for men. Women could walk in the street wearing these fetish clothes: everybody will look with envy and admiration and they will be stunned! But what is your reaction when you see a man wearing these clothes in the street? They look gay!! And i'm not...That's the problem...Is there a proper balance somewhere? If you're not gay (like me) but more refine than a brute, it would be very nice to find clothes that you really feel represent you!
