Hey there....

After reading all about the Nigerians and what not... I been thinking....

Ethnicity option includes African American, but not African African.

And what about Caucasian Africans?  What should they do?  And if they are Caucasian Africans who are holding dual citizenship in the USA (or other Americas - Canada, Mexico, So. Amer.)... Are they African Americans?

Inquiring minds and all that....

I long to visit the motherland of Causasia, one day. Then I'll take a trip to Africa, which I hear is full of minorities. I guess there, though, they would be called "majorities".

Say, since I'm white, would people in Africa have to call me a "Caucasian African" if they didn't want to look racist? And what about black people from England or something? Is it still politically correct to call them "African Americans"?

I take African-American to be synomymous with "black."  It serves the purpose of reminding American blacks that they came from somewhere, like whites did.

I personally prefer "black," because I see no purpose in subdividing black people by their countries of origin--not in this country, anyway.

Caucasian is a racial term, as is black.

You are intermixing race and ethnicity.  "Irish-American" is an ethnicity.  Caucasian or white is a race.

Africa is a continent.  "African Africans" is redundant nonsense.   Like "Australian Australians."

Nigerians are African (the place) blacks (the race).

So, I guess I'm not sure what the point is.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 2:00:16 PM)

the point is... well that I found the ethnicity list to be USA centric... how bout that?  You know what do black people in Europe call themselves?  The only option is "other" ...

PeterJay -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 2:10:45 PM)

It doesn't matter what color their skin is. If a white person comes from Africa and now lives here, they are still African / American.

TabrisMaceth -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 2:29:04 PM)

Blaakmaan...you see where this post is? "Polls and Other Random Stupidity"? Maybe it's just me, but I don't think this topic was meant to be taken all that seriously...
Now I'm off to visit Causasia, land of the Causasians! Where everyone's named Doug and the national food is Wonderbread!

fast reply

i don't like being referred as an "African" (someone please tell me where in Africa i'm from since many of ancestors were from England/Ireland) when actually i'm "American" or simply "Black".

sunshinemiss -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 4:25:12 PM)

see this is what I'm saying.  Only in the USA do we have this nonsense.  sigh.... If that is incorrect. please let me know.

purepleasure -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 4:30:37 PM)

I'm glad you didn't say white instead of caucasian.  I'm sort of a peach color, except for my freckles, those are brown.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 4:34:51 PM)

I was informed by a 5 year old neighbor that there is no such thing as a black person or awhite person. She, for instance, is brown. I am sort of a pinky peach. I have so many ethnicities in me, I just call myself the one I visibly resemble the msot But yes, only in the US do we have all tis folishness, but they also bend over backwards out here to apear PC and make sure they dont in any way shape or form offend anyone.

Very much incorrect.  Nice movie out several years ago called Mississippi Masala that showed how other countries can be every bit as stupid about race, ethnicity, skin color, etc. as the US... and some of those places would have to move ahead light years to catch up with America.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 5:40:25 PM)

Straight from my journal:

I believe that the term "African American" is absolutely stupid unless the person is a foreign national from Africa.  Black people don't have a problem with the term "black," so why should white people?  And it's ok to say "white" people, too.

The whole idea of "uber political correctness" that permeates the United States has gotten totally out of hand.  People are afraid of saying anything that will make them look racist.  The HR lady where I used to work told me that I appeared racist because I said that foreign people were my buddies.  I stared her dead in the face, picked up my name plate, pointed out my last name (I kept my married name), and said "Do you see that?  I was married to a guy from overseas for 13 years, lived overseas and was a minority there, and I've been dating a black man for years.  If you think I have any racist tendencies, you need to have your head checked," and slammed my name plate on the desk.  She didn't know what to do, so she just shut her gaping jaw and walked away.

I never had a problem with being referred to as a foreigner when I was overseas because, you know what?  I was one.  I wasn't a native, I was from a foreign country when I was visiting them.

We've gotten to be such pussies about "hurting the feelings" of anyone at all, that we've checked our collective brain at the door.

Daddy is black, I'm white (day-glo, some might say, LOL), and we talk about things in terms of color all the time.  Some of our funniest discussions start with "Why do white folks..." or "You know, black folks..." because they are funny generalizations or observations that we've made about the other person's race.  My ex-husband and I did the same thing.  It was all about people watching and learning the why's of the things people did.

This was a good movie, but if you watch most Hindi films made in India, they are about people trying to overcome the caste system.  It's more than race in many of the countries in the Indian subcontinent and in the Middle East, it's about marrying in your same socio-economic class.

I hear what your saying Red. Where I live, there's a large population of aboriginals and the general consensus from them is they prefer to be referred to as natives. Quite often I'll make a smart remark about myself as being a crazy white man to which I do get some strange looks until they see the humor in what I said. I will make comments about the French and also about the Irish. Since I am a mixture from both cultures it isn't as racially volatile as me making a not so nice comment about South Africans or Europeans.

TabrisMaceth -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 6:27:53 PM)

I suddenly remember this bitchfest over Resident Evil 5 a while back. Like, one dude said the game was racist because the main character is white and the enemies are predominately black. Nevermind it takes place in Africa, it was, as I think the jackass said, "classic racism". Then there was this very convincing parody of this, which nearly no one got. Later, I made my own, very much overt parody, which basically involved taking the original trailer and playing a soundbite of Michaels Richards saying the "N" word 30 something times. (I'd like to think it's more clever than I just made it sound.) Before the whiny brats completely overran things, every damned comment was about how the game wasn't racist. What's more, there are like 15-20 different videos on YouTube (mostly by white people) that go on about how Resident Evil 5 isn't racist.
(sigh) Crackers...
