I seen at kmart- mini blinds  29 in x 60 in for 5.99.   of course this is the cheap plastic.

light filtering vs dark,   then basic curtain rods not to high in price.

would you buy the cheap mini blinds or no?

what do you like for windows. I like alot of light at day...but at night close em up from noise. and onlookers.

I hate mini blinds. They make me think, cheap rental.

I live out in the middle of no-where so privacy is not an issue even though we have lots of huge windows. I do have heavy cotton drapes that I pull closed sometimes when it is either really hot and sunny (to help with cooling costs) or during those long cold dreary winter nights. Just a brass rod with tab top drapes that are pretty simple. Same colour as the wall in the living room, tone on tone pattern. The bedroom has heavy satin drapes in a dark colour that is close to the odd grayish green as the walls. Guest bedroom has lace that my daughter chose and the bathroom, simple white.

I don't like fussy window treatments myself.

Yes, when I lived in Cali.  Now that we live here and weather actually matters.

I usually go with celluar shades.  Open from the top or the bottom.
I bought ours from JCPenney..custom fit.  7 windows cost me a little over 300.
So they aren't exactly real pricey when you consider they are thermal...look decent..fit good.

Look into them R, I doubt you will be disappointed.

I guess what I am saying is I want to do this one time at this place...get bang for the buck.   Monroe market place is a shopping center here that will open next week. SO I bet the regular stores already here will have sales.

The busy street is driving me up the wall!   The traffic echos right into the 2 front bedrooms.  I wondered about a double curtain rod all across the wall- AND mini blinds.   I love the micro blinds but those cost more....http://www.justblinds.com/dynamic/product.cfm?productID=65&src=froogle&width=36.00&height=60.00&width_eigth=0&height_eigth=0&zmam=2546916&zmas=3&zmac=17&zmap=653660

I'd go with the curtain rails. Blinds are fiddly things and take time to keep clean. I much prefer curtains and drapes, stuff you can keep clean by putting them in the wash.

kiwisub12 -> RE: window treatments... (10/8/2008 4:57:29 PM)

You have to clean them?

Who knew.

Maybe that is why mine look dingy. [:D]

and seriously, i would go with both to help cut noise.

chamberqueen -> RE: window treatments... (10/9/2008 9:28:44 AM)

I used to mini blinds with short drapery valances at the top.  It looked very classy even though they were not expensive.  I liked that I could filter the light as I wished, and chose a color to blend with my walls - the valance was what drew the eye because it was in a contrasting color.

pahunkboy -> RE: window treatments... (10/9/2008 10:12:27 AM)

Stella, I hadnt thought on "cleaning".

looking at what I refer as "the white room", 2 windows 28.5 x 60 each look out at the river. [road noise] We are coming into the pretty season for river watching.  It will look different every 20 minutes due to wind and sun position.  When frost comes the back drop of the mountain changes too.

So maybe 2 rods that open to the left..with classic drapes.  If I go high quality then Ild want to take them when I move.   The cieling is taller then 8 feet.  [all faces west]   Being west, fading will be an issue.

Then on the  south wall is a 42 in by 60 in window.

Then since the paint isnt finished exactly- tho for October it is....I hate to buy all new stuff to take it down and put it up.

the white room is used to hang out on the computer. not to sleep in.  the other front bedroom, i slept in last year, it too has views of river.  but I might sleep in the pink purple (middle) room.  as it is quiter, but Ild have to do stuff to the heat vents- as I dont heat all the house.   during the day- i open all teh drapes, then at dark it all is closed. I even put the storm up and the storm doors at night to lessen the noise in.   mom gave me a bunch of pale blue solid drapes.  so maybe a complimentary pattern to that....I DO tho hate when a curtain rod pins comes out of the drape and then it hangs crooked.

on some days an inside shutter would be great... but those prices yikes!

sirsholly -> RE: window treatments... (10/9/2008 10:15:34 AM)

Mini blinds are a pain in the butt to clean. Just sayin...

pahunkboy -> RE: window treatments... (10/9/2008 10:45:04 AM)

yeah- I took some mini blinds outside and hosed them down in the sunlight,   the gook out of them were amazing.  and yet that gets in the lungs. maybe i could build my own shutters?

mc1234 -> RE: window treatments... (10/9/2008 4:15:47 PM)

If you have a lot of noise, you may want to consider replacing the windows - when I did this and the windows are all closed due to weather or the AC being on, it's beautifully quiet in the house.  Failing that, go with the heavier drapes, kept to the side for then drawn at night, which may help muffle the noise also.

pahunkboy -> RE: window treatments... (10/9/2008 5:31:06 PM)

I been searching ebay for ideas....

mc1234 -> RE: window treatments... (10/9/2008 5:40:30 PM)

Penney's has great window treatments and plenty of sales - even if you just check out their website or catalog for ideas.  Edited to add:  here's a link for their outlet for window treatments.  http://www5.jcpenney.com/jcp/X3.aspx?DeptID=62371&CatID=62923&cmCatLevel=3&CmCatId=&cmAMS_T=G1&cmAMS_C=D9

Roger,
Do you want to come do our windows?  Blinds are easy to clean.  Throw some pine sol in the bathtub and soak the blinds a few minutes.  Get a brush...clean.

I'd go with curtains as well.

corysub -> RE: window treatments... (10/9/2008 10:09:51 PM)

We have been buying window treatments from "Country Curtains" since we first traveled up to Stockbridge, Mass a couple of decades ago where they were established in a great Inn.  They have since expanded and have stores around the country that offer great value in curtains.  They have a catalogue that might give  you some good ideas.

TY, I am seeing what I dont like.  I dont want them too frilly.  To be candid, as a male- I hadnt given curtain much thought. Ild grab whatever at a garage sale and made it work, even to the point of using a staple gun.

So- I think I need to go wall by wall. Solids or a nonfem pattern, and a rod that opens right to left, that sort of thing. I want BOLD light- daytime and world go away night time. I peeked at hotel curtains on ebay. that might have an ap somewhere....

so drapes that are classic.  I can see I will have to buy all new rods and the pins as well.

I should maybe slow down.

Some of the problem is the new formula of the paint. it doesn cover and especially the color white.  so that- then i have to get good at fixing holes in the walls.

i wrenched my back last week- so i am watching that closely for the possiblity of med care on it.

I'm still working on it.  Today is a day off for most of the day anyway.  I head into town to get some drywall.
I'm insulating the apartment..and cleaning up the crappy job whoever built the apartment did with the drywall.
Basically its a full room remodel.

You could actually feel cold air coming in from the bricks.  So I had it sprayed with foam insulation.
In a month, my priority projects should be complete.  Then its off to colors we didn't like when we bought the house..etc.

You're always sending me pictures.  I'll send you some.

Ild love to see pics.   I  send them, and many of them, I look and say it is too messy, why didnt I clean up or edit the pics.  Holes in walls- 1 drywall has gone up in price.  I am not good at patching holes. I ended up putting up OSB on one wall simply cause it was speedier and solid.

Nebraska Im thinking is colder then PA, by 10 or more degrees.  We should have some nice weather left here.  76 and sunny.  73 - thru the next week.  I debate on digging up the bulbs. I weedwhacked some of the flowers....emptied some of the potted plants.   The place looks icky if one doesnt and if we get alot of snow- it gets in the way of snow clean up. So I been even moving rocks back so winter flows better.

I finally went to the chiropractor on my back re-injury.

My thrift store once again had shirts 3 for a dollar. yay!   im talking cotten shirts new or like new.  I trash my clothes on this house all the time.  :-)
