Everytime we get something cleaned the way we want it.  We tear apart something that "has" to be done and the place is messy again.  The entire basement is in a shambles now because of the one room.

Anyway, sending you photo's.  Oh by the way what bulbs do you have to dig up?  I'm still new at this plant stuff.  I've been planting all perennials so I don't have to deal with the digging up and replanting each year.  With the one exception of the elephant plants.

Still need to get some more tulip bulbs into the ground before it gets too late.

I lost ALL of my bulbs last year. So I want to do it right this time.  :-)

Another fan of Country Curtain thermals for the windows here in the Northeast.

Just so you know tulips need to be in the ground for the freeze or they won't bloom

I have blinds.  I hate them.  The last ones I pulled down for cleaning, they fell apart on me.  Cheap ugly things.  I am slowly finding curtains to match my rooms, and getting that heavy vinyl stuff for the backs.  Like hotel curtains.  I prefer to live in a cave.  With the option of pulling back the drapes when I crave some sun in my house.

pahunkboy -> RE: window treatments... (10/11/2008 6:25:52 AM)

I was at lowes last night.  I got phone wire as I need to rewire the phone line.

While there- I looked at the entire isle of drape stuff.

the prices are better then kmart.

i would NEVER buy the fake wood!   plastic turns yellow.  i hate how everything is getting plastic.

thinking of my friend Jeanne in Chicago, she had blue satin, but I think something with a better backing. she also had the sheers that were pleated- i forget the color.

blue satin, but lined might work,

i bought a few simple curtain rods.

also- i looked at the thrift store and asked.  she said the large drapes are bought fast.

i will have to take it window by window,
wood shutters would be nice. i looked at wood to maybe build my own. at least on the 4 front bedroom windows.  28.5 in x 60 in. ill have to think it out more.

99 cent store for phone line.  It's 99 cents after all and it saves you like 6 bucks alone.

I grew up working.  Am comfortable now but still cheap.

wow- the phone wire took a while.  I have the heavy wire to the upstairs, and the 4 wire to the downstairs.  the fatter wire is better.

also- I should throw out the old pieces!!  argh.   anyhow I have a few peices to return to Lowes then.

Hey, you can try cheap sheets from Target or one of the other discount stores.  If you really want to get creative even shower curtains can cover windows.

ok, here's some advice for you from a "window fashions" expert (I work for one of the big names)...

The faux wood blinds won't turn yellow. Like anything, over time there would be some discoloration due to age, sunlight, etc. but, if you want the wood look but don't want to pay the price of premium hardwoods it's great.

If you want something even more economical, look at the metal blinds. Either the Mark1 series or the Riviera 1" classic. If you are wanting light control (room darkening) go with the Mark1 with Lightmaster feature.

If you are wanting to have the type of shade that has the most R value to help with your heating and cooling costs, go with the cellular shades. The best is in the Evening Star collection. This one has the highest R value (3.9) and will completely block out the light.....great for bedrooms. The next step down would be the doublecell collection. Not completely room darkening, but, still has a great R value to help with those heating/cooling bills.

As for the K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Target, etc. blinds...please, please please...remember you get what you pay for....those blinds are mass produced by machines. The custom made are 80% man-made. Also remember, the "stock" blinds usually only carry a 1 year warranty. The custom blinds/shades have a limited lifetime warranty...basically it breaks down this way...cording 3 years, fabric 5 years, anything mechanical (i.e. cordlock, tilter, cordless motor, etc.) is a lifetime warranty...not to mention if ya call my 800 number to say you have broken cording on your 20 yr old shade and you catch me in a good mood, I have it repaired for you for free. *smiles*

As to the cleaning, cells are easy...gently run the wand attachment of your vaccum cleaner over it. Woods/faux woods...run a cloth across them just like dusting any wood furniture you have. The metals, just spray them off every now and then. I don't suggest soaking in chemical cleaners in a tub though, that will break down the fibers of your cording that runs through the blind.

Hard times call for drastic measures.  As a whole, mini blinds are out.   Window shades and valances are the thing now.
It depends upon what you want to do with your home and how much you wish to spend.  I watch a lot of HGTV.

I use anything the cats won't tear down or mess up with means no mini blinds and no curtains - the curtains also tended to get a nice heavy layer of cat fur on them as well as getting pulled down.  I have settled on vertical blinds, though it is my understanding they are out too.

that isnt so far fetched.  I am using dark blue sheets. My brother got them from a convention center.  Noticing my habit when I get up I open everything.... hmm

What a lovely reply.  TY.

The R-value. I hadnt thought of that.  See the trouble is this isnt my final house.  At least I hope not. I still would like to move. My bro goes thru this when he does houses.  A house wont sell unless you pretty it up, then the new people tear it all out and put in their taste.

Ill keep cellular in mind.

R, like I said in my original post.  Ceulluar custom made at JC penny...pretty cheap

ncprincess -> RE: window treatments... (10/12/2008 11:06:37 AM)

JCP is a good place....just an fyi...for my company at the moment from now thru mid Nov (if I'm not mistaken...would have to double check promos at work tomorrow), JCP has a 65% + 10% additional savings not to mention mail-in rebates depending upon the dollar amount you spend. Both Lowe's and Home Depot promos are at 20% off at the moment.

Hello all.

I never thought in my life the drapery hardware would excite me!  oh yeah.  You see, the walls are slat board plaster.   Being I want all the light I can get,  this means I have to go beyond the frame of window.  A curtain that falls down is useless.  So the rods must be secure.

I have made some progress.

I am working with what I have and building on it.   There are more then 28 windows.

I scored items from 2 thrift stores this month.  [including a quality fry pan]   While I did buy 1 pair of drapes and 1 pair of shears, I am finding there is no hope for thrift store drapes.  Ild rather shall out abit more and buy enough to do the job, and a style I like.  Most drapes used are not enough panels, or too worn.

Today tho- I did buy 2 HUGE mini blinds metal.  $4 a peice.  They had the vynel blinds that would fit for $2 but they were SHABBY.  For $4 a can get new ones - 29in-64 at Lowes in snow white.

But- working with what I have. Mom gave me her pretty blue drapes when she moved. [went from big house to small condo] I like the style and I have many panels.   But now- I found $1 bag of drapery hardware at the thrift store- YIPPEE!

Hardware is an oddity.  Some of the older hardware is MUCH better then the newer.  being that you cant really see this hardware- it doesnt have to be fancy.

I hope to have pics of where I am at on this -soon.

Anyhow- to put up more rods- I will have to add a board to the wall to even out - the snugness between the window frames and the plaster.

I wanted to sleep in the middle pink pruple bedroom, but I would have to heat the entire house to have heat there. Thats too bad.

The white room, I put up pink and blue, metal mini- its what i had- they dont cover all 64 in- but no need since in on the computer in use of that room.  I figure maybe UNDER it- ill go with the $4 snow white mini blinds...  understand- the entire house is a work in progress- even when for instance I paint- it doesnt mean it is done right or finished.  :-)

The blue BR,  (carpet is blue) I put moms cutrains....  so far so good.

I have a sunroom that is hard to figure out. One of the storm windows does not exist- so- it pretty much is an outdoor room. yikes.

The back bedroom- I put up those sheers. Silly me thought they made 2 types of rods- Panels and pleats.  I hadnt figured that my rod was too big.  (hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. a BIG rod, hehe)

Anyhow- so far so good.

thanks for all your comments and to those who emailed me off the list.
Roger
