So far nobody has judged you.
Bucking against stereotypes and interest in varied cultures is to be lauded.
Still...
If you ever put it up on youtube, let us all know.

Aneirin, I imagine women don't want men joining the class because they don't want to be hit on.  Speaking as a shameless horndog, I would take a dance class if I thought it would improve my batting average with the opposite sex.  I had to choose a few electives in college for a non-Western civ requirement.  I specifically chose "Gender Studies" because I knew it would be filled with women (yes, I'm a pig.).  The class had at least 40 people, and only 6 men were in the class.  I certainly didn't sit through an entire semester of leftist propaganda to be enlightened.  I dated 3 women in that class....that's a woman per credit hour earned.  Not bad, if I say so myself.

Now I don't suspect you of working the same strategy.  But the women in that class probably do suspect it.  It's no biggie, man.  It certainly isn't something to get upset about.

I suppose you have to ask yourself why you would in your leisure time want to to go to a class. If it is to hit on women, then why go and exert yourself when you could hit on women in a bar or other leisureable facility. A dance class is not so much leisureable, but hard work, physically. With most dance classes, if someone is there to ass around, i.e. not do what they are saying they are there to do, they are asked to leave, as they are a distraction to others who want to learn. From what I have experienced of dance classes, despite others being there, they are out of sight, as one focuses intently on what they are doing, all that comes into focus is the teacher and the self. Yes, some dance studios have wall mirrors, they are good for one thing, but at the same time bad. Good that you can see you are getting the moves right, but bad in comparison to others you see. Notice others and you lose track of the self, this is noted by the teacher. Too much looking elsewhere, only serves to enforce the stereotype and you find yourself excluded. Males in dance classes are especially on their best behaviour, as a minority, we can be done without, why add fuel to a fire.

I want to hit on women, believe me, a dance class is not the place to do it, as dance is physically demanding and will sap the energy right out of your lust.

Why?  It's cheaper.  You're single, think about it.  How much can you spend at a club chasing women?  Now, how much is a cup of coffee after class?  How much is a class?  I don't know about there, but dance classes aren't that much here; it's a few hundred dollars.  It really isn't that much.  Trust me, bars and clubs are poor places to meet women.

I don't blame women for wanting a sanctuary from men.  As long as we are permitted those same sanctuaries, I don't see the problem.  Damn, let them have it.

I suppose you have to try it to understand it, dance is hard work, but being able to dance is joy of the spirit, why limit oneself. I am an art student, my class is 98% female, I have good relations with them, because I treat them as friends, I do not try to hit on them. If I chose I could, as I could with any at my college, as males in arts are scarce. It is I choose not to, I don't need the hassle as I need to concentrate on my studies, and that with severe insomnia, like two hours sleep at most is the norm, too tired to care most of the time.

Aneirin, I do understand.  I am spending my Friday night at home.  I do that almost every weekend.  I worked on my brother's car earlier.  We drank beer and cooked burgers.  I haven't been out to a club in years.  I am a grown up now, so I don't act like that anymore.  But I remember acting like that, and I know that many of our fellow sex act like that.  I'm just giving you a reason for women excluding us from activities.  They want to feel secure, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

If a woman was excluded from a particular class teaching something that is not gender-specific (as this type of dance is performed by both genders?) it would be all over the news, people would be picketing everywhere, bras would be a-burning.  I can hear it now "oh the outrage!".

Remember that one woman who put up a big stink to get into The Citadel?

While I am all about the gals having their girly time, it's a shame that they would be unable to see that this prospective student is not just a mere "ogler".  Unless he is.    Then for shame, for shame.

monywildcat, We exclude women all the time.  Sports, military, etc.  Women have only caught up in the last 20 years concerning  professional and academic circles.  Hell, they are still far behind.  The only fields that women can claim supremacy in are: nursing, secretarial work, domestic work, elementary school teaching.  We aren't equal by any standard, and we never will be.  We will always have differences.  Again, I see nothing wrong with women having a refuge from men.  We both deserve those refuges.  As long as both sexes have them....stop being a BITCH (pun intended.)

Two wrongs never make a right.

Who says these are wrongs?  Assuming that I'm not being harmed in some way, as was the case with women/minorities being barred business deals conducted at men/white-only clubs, why should they have to let me in?

If men want a men-only steam room or squash court or whatever, I think they should have it.  If women want a women-only dance class or exercise class or whatever, I think they should have it.  If you want a co-ed dance class and there isn't one where you are, you can try to start one.  If there isn't any interest in a co-ed dance group, the women's group is under no obligation to let you join them.

This isn't sexism, it's life.  If there was no women's bowling league or softball league or whatever where I am, the men wouldn't have to take me.  I don't have a right force folks to bowl or play softball or dance or whatever with me

It's called the male gaze. I know it's a radical concept for a white guy, but not everyone is going to give you the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes you'll have to prove yourself. Life is unfair. That's what the internet is for, so you can broadcast your disdain for any perceived offense.
