LadyEllen -> UK - the first slave nation (10/15/2008 2:35:29 PM)

Well, they want us all to have biometric identity cards.

They now want to operate a database storing our emails, SMS text messages, phone calls, and details of what websites we frequent.

And they already arranged special investigative powers to deal with terrorism - which apparently includes any infraction of even the most minor civic regulation.

And they're talking about forced labour on government projects for social welfare benefits.

Whilst they're doling out all our money for the next forty years to banks, and our ordinary job market dries up, throwing more and more onto the social welfare benefits for which we'll be working on government projects.

And they want us to reduce emissions as gas and electric prices soar on the back of profiteering by the once nationalised, now private power companies. "Turn down your heating" they say, as vulnerable people turn it off altogether for fear of the bill - their deaths are good, the state does not want weak slaves.

A couple more years people, a couple more years. We shall all be slaves to the state, working hard for the profits of those animals more equal than ourselves and glad for our two bowls of gruel a day.

And we shall all walk willingly to this, just as we shall all walk willingly for the punishment sessions when pig iron production figures dont add up, and thank the glorious leaders for their mercy when they hang someone other than our family to set an example.

will the US be next?

LadyEllen -> RE: UK - the first slave nation (10/15/2008 2:47:37 PM)

The US is too big for this.

It would first require some means of tearing the country asunder, prompting perhaps secessionist urgings so that there were smaller entities with proper guarded borders.

Never underestimate the great british love of misery. They love it.
You ever go to a supermarket during a shortage of anything? They'll queue four hours for a loaf they don't want, they'll fight over the last carton of milk even if they are lactose intolerant.
Paulinus told Nero that the Britons were an ungovernable rabble who hated their own hierarchy almost as much as their enemies, Nero disagreed and the resultant ruck killed more people that the Hiroshima bomb, that was Bouddicca bowing out in style.
That this series of deranged tribes, which has only got worse as the Germans will happily tell you would ever be yoked to anything for longer than the novelty made amusing  gives me the giggles. To be British is to be born with a keen slice of anarchy in you. If Cromwell could not keep a grip on us, we have little to fear from the pathetic spineless articles currently squatting in Westminster, even if they do have that rottweiller as a home secretary.
New laws are not a problem, not with our police, they make the keystone cops look efficient.
If I wasn't emigrating, I would love to stick around to watch what happens next.

shhhhhhhhhhhh!

less then 3 hours to the "debate" gag me.

Some would say the "Mile" in London rules the world.  I am surprised the UK fell for privatization. I thought the citizens were more informed...

Is it really that bad?

No it isnt.

If a peon gains to much power he is shot down- ...they have their ways.   at least on biomets- the grid knows how you are in that you are NOT the fugitive.

...we presume that the US calls the shots...but there is alot of money in the mile, London.

--as to utitlity rates- I am all for states rights. Our governor is about to do with the state senate did not...and extend rate caps. yay.

I dont know about the UK- but locally, I see room to cut back.

I do wonder about 10 years forward....

There are no plans to store the content of emails. Just details of who you have been in communication with. I think ISP`s already have to keep data for 12 months under previous legislation. All the same, its a slippery slope.

Well, thats you screwed then; as regional organiser for the WRVS Islamic Fundamentalist Chapter, the mere fact that you have here communicated with me, will be enough to get you ten years in a (New) Labour camp.

Never fear! the people of UK have been disarmed, you should be safe now!
Now please report in to the re-education camp to alleviate some of your concerns.

Depends what you mean by ' we.' Those Britons who are not English have always been slaves. The English have been slaves since the nationalisations following the Second World War. Since then all that has happened is the dividing lines have been re-arranged as to what the slaves are allowed to do, or not do, as the case may be. There has  been an erosion of individual liberty all that time, with a slight renaissance under Thatcher. Top of the list of state weapons is VAT which keeps enterprise nicely under the thumb. Gordon Brown now wants to extend the regime to the entire World with his plans for global socialism through the control of money flows. Countries with any sense would tell Gordon Brown to shove it.

Very doubtful. As slaves go, we Americans seem to be numerous, decentralized, and reasonably well armed. [;)]

Orwell rings the bell louder every day.....But don't fret ; you're not alone.

George Bush announced in a press conference the other day, that if we don't semi /partially-nationalize the banking industry, the free market will go down the drain.

Long live the prolls.....

There is a growing push in the US for more socialized programs - and although it's great to provide assistance to those in need,  it's worry some when large chunks of your population find themselves dependent on the government for basic needs like food and housing.

I have often wondered if it wasn't time for a new revolution in the US.   The problem is what the heck do we replace the government with?  For all the problems with Democracy,  we seem to be very lucky that we get the privilege of rotating our old crooks out and new crooks in to Washington every few years.

So we get to save the Free Market by removing the freedoms?

not really.

the 90s pushed back much welfare.   the item today is the boomers are retireing.

we could cut military spending in half.    right off the bat.    easily.

Since this is no longer the 90's  - I'm not so sure how it applies to where we seem to be going now.  Also don't be fooled by the concept that the only form of welfare are those that collect a check once a month.   There are many other forms of welfare that are not so obvious.  Like for example those of us who are able to get massive refund checks from the government without ever paying a dime in taxes.

As for Military spending.   Everyone suggest we cut it in half.  The problem is we cut it in half, then in half, then in half again... eventually that turns out to be a lot of halves.   Regan proved that a strong Military doesn't necessarily mean war.   In fact such a military can be a deterrent to future conflicts as well as actually provide a boost to the economy.

well,  that hints of classism.    The welfare of the 60s/70s is nothing like today.

2.3 trillion $ disapeared from the military -   they could not find it in the audit.

IMO - the new drug benefit should have been a bid thing,

Also Welfare has alot to do with the state.  In PA, it is $195, and lasts 3 months- they even put a lien on your stuff.....

funny thing about conservatives.  they are often the very first people IN THOSE lines that they oppose.

Uh what the heck are you talking about?

Since I wasn't around in the 60's or 70's - I don't really think I'm qualified to comment on the system back then.   Whatever it is or was though again says little about how the system is now.

Your right it does have a lot to do with the state,  and the PA system sounds like it sucks.   Fortunately it's a little easier to change a state government then a national one.  If you feel strongly about such an issue then maybe you should lobby your state legislature.

What lines are these you are referring to?     Granted I have a limited exposure to the state welfare programs but is your political affiliation part of the questionnaire form?   BTW: Republican's tend to be capitalist who although they support less wasteful government spending aren't usually oppose to getting some of that spending if it is going to be wasted.
When's the last time you saw a liberal who screamed about the need to raise taxes offer to pay an extra 20% of their income just for goodwill or simply as a matter of principal?

OP, sorry for the hijack of your thread.
