I would have to disagree with your statement that if you don't have money, buy something like a Beetle, which even if 40 years old will still be a good runner, as I ran a VW air cooled motor for ten years, what skills were lacking  in Modern Britain to keep such a simple engine in good order, I had to learn myself, as garages other than expensive specialist air cooled garages, were useless. The other thing, it rains in Britain, in fact it rains a lot, and these 40 year old machines rot and rot fast. The yearly pre MOT  servicing usually includes the use of a MIG welder, and the same tool again after the vehicle has failed the MOT to get the bits you missed in the pre MOT servicing.
Oh, yes, they are also thirsty engines, 19 mpg was the norm for my 1600, and I used to drive it in accordance with a vacuum guage/ economy guage.
They are reliable, but the engines are past their best at 70k, most vee dubs around seem to be running if on their origial engines, circa 200k. My first engine was 260k before it self destructed on a hill and set fire to the road.

I'd agree that any cheap old car means you have to be handy with a spanner. The VW is relatively simple and can be kept going more easily than other cars. The expertise with the engine can usually be covered by finding guys who specialise, and they're not found in the main service centres, but more likely through VW clubs. Cars do rot, but if that is taken care of immediately when found, the car can be kept going indefinitely. I'm not saying they're maintenance free, just relatively cheap and uncomplicated.

Nonsense! We need no sympathy - we're nowhere near the excesses of Wulvrampton or Dudlayyy.

Ask Seeks (when he's off moderation). Met him at the BBB last time so he knows (and had better tell)

heh.. guess I didnt really notice, since I spent the time only talking with Riff and you...lol

LadyEllen -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/19/2008 6:53:32 AM)

But did you notice any difference between Riff and me?

Riff is from the south east - mostly Saxon accent if we ascribed regional accents to tribal locations. Mine would be a mix of Saxon, Angle, Norse and Welsh on that basis - the Midlands in general is where the Norse/Saxon border was drawn for the Danelaw and the Welsh border isnt too far away.

North of here is Angle with the Norse influence growing stronger until the far north of England where its a mix akin to here again but different from here because of the absence of Saxon in the mix. West of here it grows more Welsh. Southwest is Saxon and Welsh, with the Saxon becoming stronger into the southeast and the Welsh stronger into the southwest. Our accents and their mixed up nature, shows more than anything else what a mixed up bunch we are!

yeah, I did notice a difference...

Aneirin -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/19/2008 7:20:45 AM)

The word Welsh,  I understand comes from the word Wealas, a Saxon word for foreigner. The Saxons when they infiltrated Britain reffered to the existing population as Foreigners, as the land that was the Britons, was now theirs.

The Wealas, being the existing population were what was left after the Romans had quit Britain, so a large number of celt and Romano British plus whatever small group decided to peacefully settle and integrate here after.

The Wealas if they chose not to assimilate to the Saxon way of life were pushed to the further extremities of Britain, the less choice arable land, the extremities being parts of Wales, Cornwall and Cumbria, where they to this day identify as being different from the rest of the population, and yes, with some they feel oppressed when it is the only oppression is in their own minds, we are not what we once were.
