I actually went out to meet a potential at a restaurant. She brought her 5yr old daughter with her (I knew she was coming, it was just a casual meeting with G rated conversation only) She refused to reign her daughter in even as she ran through the restaurant singing, walked about with parts of her dinner in hand eating and generally annoying everyone. I was forced to intercede and told the little girl to sit down, eat her dinner, and enjoy a pleasant conversation or she and I would retire to the ladies room for further discussion (No, I wouldn't have actually spanked the child as I have no desire to go to jail). The threat worked beautifully. It was apparently exactly what the little girl needed. Someone to set rules and enforce them (something I happen to be pretty good at anyway).
There are restaurants that charge an additional gratuity for large groups and buffets often add a surcharge for wasting food. I think restaurants should be able to add an unruly child charge to the bill of the parents who refuse to discipline their children. That might force some of them to at least try to keep them in check, or stay at McDonalds if nothing else.

MissA you could of gotten an attendee and complained. I have not been to the movies in a very very long time, but it used to be people would be asked to move or leave if they kept disrupting or allowing kids to disrupt a movie.

Restaurants should be free to designate "No children" hours.

I would never consider taking my child out to dine after 7pm. During occasions while on a vacation, I will order take-out after this time. My five-year old doesn't have too many problems behaving as she loves to dine out and struggles for days deciding on her attire. Not so long ago, however, I have grabbed her hand, asked for our meals to be packed up for us and left with her kicking and screaming because her behavior was not acceptable. I have noticed tho, her behavior as a toddler was worse in places not designed for families. Gotta love the places with crackers, crayons and cookies for good little girls who behave and eat their greenbeans.

Being a mom makes me cherish the kid-free zones, especially while out on a date.

Ok, I work in a restaurant and I know what it's like to have bratty little shits running around or doing stupid things. And because the laws today are so fucked up, and the parents are so lazy (And no I am not calling ALL parents lazy), that none of the children are punished or displined, it's annoying as HELL to have kids in public. I literally have had customers come up to me and whisper, "I want to sit anywhere but near those children." That's really pathetic. I don't think restaurants should eliminate childeren, but maybe have areas where there are no children allowed.

fergus -> RE: Children Free Restaurants or Areas in restaurants (3/8/2006 9:28:04 PM)

I did not vote, because the first choice related to what a resturaunt should be 'allowed' to do, while the rest about what they SHOULD do.

I like kids, and would not eat in a resturant that excluded a human being.

That being said, as free Americans, I think it should the the right of the owner to set what sort of policy they want in their privately owned establishment. It is also out right as free Americans NOT to eat or work there if we don't like those policies.

Tell that to the city of South Bend. They recently passed a law declaring smoking illegal in all public places - including privately-owned bars, restaurants and bowling alleys.

Contrary to what we would like to believe, we are NOT "free Americans." Our freedoms are being systematically stripped away one tiny nip at a time. In the county where I live, noise above 80 decibels can get you a fine of up to $2500, as of April 1. This means I can't mow my lawn with my current lawn mower, and my neighbor can't ride his Harley, but I still have to listen to my neighbor's screaming brats (and her screaming AT them) all summer long, because the ordinance specifically EXCLUDES shouting and yelling.

But to keep this on the original topic - I'd much rather eat in a kid-free zone. I'd also rather eat in a large group-free zone. Seems every time Master and I go out for a quiet dinner for two, we end up next to rowdy kids, or even rowdier family reunions.

I like children in restaurants. Any good restaurant should have a selection.... fried, boiled and braized

truesub4u -> RE: Children Free Restaurants or Areas in restaurants (3/8/2006 10:51:35 PM)

Ok time for my opinion on this... Kid free zone resturants? Lord have mercy. Not liking someones kid sitting there staring at you..... perhaps your purfume stinks and the kid is offended by you. You aftershave burns his nose and this causes him to cry.

The only way to get kids use to being in public.. is taking them in public. This is family bonding time being able to go and about with family.

MHOO.. I do not know if you are from NC originally... but NC has all my life. ... (whole damn family is from here but me... born in Fla.. lol) But raised in NC... has always been family state. It's them outsiders moving in here that bring that type of bull with them.. just like the lottery.

But families have as much right to go out with their littles ones just as everyone has the right to go out with whoever. If you do not like screaming kids and you know they're gonna be there... go elsewhere... go later... usually not always.. parents take their little ones out before 6-7pm. But to make a restuarant a kid free zone.... pppfffttttt....

Already have apartment, mobile home rentals that do not allow kids, hotel, and such... got to allow them to go somewhere besides home and McDonalds.

SirKenin -> RE: Children Free Restaurants or Areas in restaurants (3/8/2006 10:57:02 PM)

I can not believe that after three months somebody actually brought this thread back from the dead.

So, once again, I can easily pass on screaming, yelling, bratty, unruly, undisciplined children while I am eating. It will not hurt My feelings one bit.

Sure they do, but if they do so with little ones who have not been adequately taught how to behave at the dinner table, then their going out is interfering with MY right to a pleasant dinner, and that's happening far too frequently for me.

IronBear -> RE: Children Free Restaurants or Areas in restaurants (3/9/2006 2:06:08 AM)

Children out of control need a good swipe accross the tail feathers as a warning and the parents need to be arrested for breaches of duty if care..... I'm not terribly biased but I also see the crap on the streets with kids out of cotroll and telling all and sundry that they can do what they like because they are legally juvinile (under 17 here). I'd like tooption to eat in either a family reasurant or in a child free one. I do not agree that parents should be able to inflict their misbehaving brood on me and usually find this out in no uncertain terms. I have a mate who has declared his house and property a child free zone and places signs to that effect.. It stops casual visitors from dropping in with kids which over a two year period did over A$200,000 worthof damage to antiques and other expensive items he collects. Parents in court argued that he should have put the things away or sold them so kids couldn't breakl them.... Like I said, I'm not terribly biased, but I perfer a buffer zone between kids and I.

In your earlier post, you talked about our rights being stripped away ... and I SOOOO agree with you on that one ;)

But in this one ... you having a pleasent dinner in someone else's private establishment is not a right. And if you are unhappy about the service, atmosphere, dining experience - etc ... it IS your right NOT to go there again. In fact, if I had a bad experience at a resturant, I would contact the owner, explain that I would not be going there again, tell them EXACTLY why, and also tell all my friends.

Interestingly enough, sometimes I Like to tell the owners when I have had a GREAT experience too ... we don't do that often enough in life.

IB,
My friend, in the US if a parent followed your policy the parent would more likely be arrested if they DID give their child a "good swipe across the tail feathers" than if they didn't.

You know Mr. Warren...even in your sense of humor you're a bit sadistic.
Haha.

Ok..I have wee ones. I pick and choose the restaurant that we go out to eat with them carefully. I'm certainly not going to take them somewhere expensive and quiet. Most likely Applebees or TGIF. Noisey places...and even then I insist that they behave accordingly. Whether they do or not is a crap shoot. They are after all three and five and still learning. The only way they can learn is to eat out. Some days they are angels. Some days they aren't. The days they aren't I pack em up and get the food to go because I certainly won't be enjoying that meal and neither will anyone who is there PAYING for their own food. I think this teaches them that unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated. I've been on the receiving end of having to sit near unruley children...it's not pleasant. I wouldn't expect anyone to tolerate mine under the same circumstances.

Not constitutionally, no, but it's as much a right as it is for that family to be there for their own dinner. Courtesy would dictate that parents keep their children under control in public spaces.

Oh, I've done this more than once. I have NO problem letting someone know my experience was less than satisfactory. I also have no problem letting a manager know if my experience in their establishment went above expectations.

As I look at all the court documents sitting at my desk.. because of the fights I have over how I raise my kids.... All because I busted ones ass for ignoring me in a Wal-mart... they opened the candy anyways.. and I busted her ass. CHILD ABUSE... but you know.. the fight in the court was worth it.. because she never did it again... <smiles> But this was years ago too.

My mom told me from the start.... I can be a stay at home mom.. or a go out mom.. depends on what you teach your kids from begining. Not one time.. have I ever had to take my kids from a resturant.. becaues of their behavior... i've even have had some walk up and was shocked to see kids there.. they were so well mannered.

So yes.. it does fall on the parent to make sure how kids are in public.... but at same time.. kids are about as unpredicatable as the weather is. All one can so is hope for the best.. and deal with the problems as it arises.

Aileen, I think says its best. In order to teach kids ... you have to show them.. but during the learning ... if it's begining to look like a failure.. get it to go.. and let others enjoy their meals. But don't try to make the place a kid free zone just because you THINK kids are always a pain in your evening events. Because not all kids are not.

Parents should keep their kids in line, taking them outside if need be. While in Dallas due to Hurricane Rita (that slut), I had an otherwise nice meal ruined by having a couple right beside me with a screeching, screaming little miscreant. Now, before anyone accuses me of hating kids, I don't. I like them. Like them well done with tabasco.

Same here mate.. That is why we have a major juvinile crime problem. Police dare not take action unless there are numerous witnesses and property is severly dammages of an assult victim (perps being juvinile) is critical.. The courts will not deal with offenders and juvi gangs will and do come after complaintants to seek revenge...... There needs to be radical reversal of current laws and bring back the original laws which were very heavy on child protection but never gave children the power to over rule adults which is something I will never agree with or accept..... I'm in favour of boot camps which have worked here with kids turning the corner and helping other kids to become valuable members of society..
