i cannot imagine going back to San Francisco and seeing that beautiful bridge with an ugly net underneath it.  What is to prevent the person from jumping with a cutting tool or climbing up the net and over it?  i think this is a stupid idea and a waste of money.  Determined people will find a way to kill themselves.

i always wondered why people pick this bridge to jump off of - i have read people travel from all over just to jump from this bridge - anyone know why?

They’ll probably take down the net once they see how many birds get caught up in it and the animal rights nut jobs start squawking (if they haven’t all ready).

This is another example of trying to legislate the perfect society.  People kill themselves.  It’s sad but it’s true.  As with all things there is a practical limit on what we can do.  We could, after all, prevent nearly every suicide if we hired licensed mental health professionals to monitor every citizen – but at what cost to society in both economic terms and freedom?

Why do people choose the Golden Gate Bridge to make their exit?  I suspect that for many of them it represents a dramatic end, a way of saying look at me and you should have noticed me earlier

the use it because it's high enough that they can be almost completely assured of death when they hit the water. At that height it's almost the same as hitting concrete.

True.  But why give yourself those few seconds - when you're plunging toward the water - to realize that maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all?  At least with a gun to the head there's no time for anguished (and usuless) second thoughts once you pull the trigger.

Edited to add (in light of veletears' response to Greedy):  Here on the Erie Canal we get the occasional suicide attempt off one of the bridges.  Most don't succeed but some do and these bridges are only a fraction of the height that the Golden Gate is.  Although Height is certainly a factor I suspect an equally important factor is what part of your body hits the water first.  There is also the possibility of a stress induced heart attack on the way down.

Actually, around my parts, the favorite form of dramtic suicide is to jump into the Niagara River and get swept over the falls.  There are suicided hotlines located at various points along the river.

To be sure, though, sometimes they are not actual suicides but dumb ass out-of-state fishermen who somehow miss the big sign that says : WARNING.  FALLS AHEAD.  INCREASING CURRENTS.  NO BOATS PAST THIS POINT.  TURN BACK NOW.  $500.00 FINE FOR FAILURE TO COMPLY IF YOU SURVIVE.

i think Marc2b and Greedy are both right about the reasons... nothing more irritating and/or embarrassing than a botched attempt if someone really meant it, and we don't tend to hear about the people who go faaaaar out into the woods to end it all.   A fairly certain ending to pain + a final cry for attention after the fact...

You could concievably survive a shot to the head, it's rare, but even gun suicides don't always go right.

more people jump there then any other place in the USA.   supposedly they move to Californina, and then dont find "it" ...so  the last best hope then is gone.    there are plenty of cliffs in CA. at least no one has to clean up the blood? or pay for burial.

Some of these people deciding to spend money like that... will cause more to think of suicide because they are actually paying the debt to create it and then to have to remove it later.  What a waste...  Suicides off that bridge may cost a lot of money... you can't stop it even with a net.  They will find a way.  How about spending that money on some better mental health policies in this nation?  Why not go the route of rather than catch you in a net... we help heal you and bring you back?

I think that is a very good idea.  Perhaps many of those who have already ended their lives wouldn't have done so if they'd had appropriate intervention earlier.

I can't believe that I didn't think of this earlier - if they put that net up, you know that there will be some loony yahoos who will jump just for the fun of it.

Have you seen that film Rush Hour Three? Jackie Chan will be climbing up and down it in Rush Hour 4 for sure.

I am confused here, you obviously typed the last line.....and yet you think it is a stupid idea to try and deter people from doing it from this bridge.

put a pay per view webcam on the bridge to record the more spectacular efforts and give the money to a fund for free counselling.
If they want to jump, let them.
It's a free country.
