..........saw this story on the CBC this morning.  Whether or not one is an aethist this seems to me to be a good example of free speech. How will this story play in the US?

Based on the stories i have ever heard, God may seem to go away for a while, but always seems to come back.

It's just the commercial space on London buses - religious groups buy it to promote their message, and since atheism is a belief of sorts... it's only fair. I wonder whether Christopher Hitchens contributed to their war effort

Atheism is a belief like not collecting stamps is a hobby.

...dunno, but Richard Dawkins was reported to have done so on the CBC this morning.

Maybe there is, maybe there isn't.  It's good that they are allowing them the free speech to voice their opinions.

......would there be a backlash in the US if a bus company there had similar signs on their buses?

Holy heresy, Blasphemer!

If anyone tried that here they'd probably bring back burnings at the stake.

That is really cool that they can express their opinions like that!

I think this could pass in the US if everyone KNEW that this space was purchased personal advertisement space, that it was not an any way representative of the company's or government's view of the subject...otherwise people could freak out.

That's another maybe, maybe not answer.  They have taken the ten commandments off of courthouses already.
Times are changing.
I know there was discussion to take In God we Trust off the money, yet currently it is still there.
The pledge is no longer used in public schools.

The backlash hasn't been huge so far.

Free speech? You mean not having the government infringe upon that? Do you mean someone else using their ability of Free Speech to complain to the Bus company and threaten boycotts?

I'm baffled:

a) 'Seems to be a counter-productive advert. For instance, the idea that anxiety can be eradicated on the back of not believing in a god, is bordering on the ridiculous.

b) Why would they do this in England? Let's see, there are 1.6 million church goers in this country; half of these are catholic and half are protestant. The catholic half is swelled by a significant number of Polish migrant workers, and the protestant half by a significant number of African immigrants. So, approximately 800,000 of 55 million natives go to church. Remove those over 65 who won't be alive in twenty years time, and you'll be left with roughly 200,000 of 55 million, or one in every 275ish. We're not exactly running 'round in mobs looking for heretics to burn, so I don't understand why they're wasting their time.

the neighborhood drunk, a fellow named, "Moosh" if i remember correctly, was firmly convinced that God was a spotted stray dog.  Who am i to argue?  If his belief brought him comfort then i was all for it.   i still have a warm spot in my heart for spotted stray dogs.

....very important point you touch on here. Is a society based on free speech if citizens are free to infringe other peoples free speech? Clearly there's a paradox, and one that's not easily resolved.

(edited for a silly typo)
