There is a movie called "God is my Co Pilot."  I drove in a passenger seat on a trip over the weeken. So that makes me a co pilot therefore God. So I do exists.

I remember when I was young and would stay up to watch Tom Snyder and Madelyn Murray O'Hare would be on spouting off about atheism. Interesting character, but not so sure anyone's mind was changed. I am sure if someone wanted to advertise atheist views they'd be more than welcome although if it was on a bus or billboard someone would come along and paint over it or rip it off etc.

lol.........but but but free speech! USA is the proud defender of free speech!

Our First Amendment rights to free speech have been limited and curtailed under the current administration to "free speech zones." Hadn't you heard?

I'm really liking the idea behind the adverts.  However, in my experience, religionists are set in their ways, and refuse to listen.  Like Dawkins said in the interview pertaining to these ads, "This campaign to put alternative slogans on London buses will make people think — and thinking is anathema to religion."  I don't even try to convince them anymore, and just give a wide berth when religion in it's many versions is brought up in conversations.

To answer the OP, ads like this in the US would fly like a lead balloon, and like subtee said, the state-backed church would bring back burning at the stake.  I could envision a whole new Inquisition and Salem Witch Trials, to 'purge the enemy within'.

I find that is the same in reverse as well.  People are set in their ways, believers and non believers.  It certainly is not one sided.

I just cannot fathom why people who identify as atheists are behind the slogan though.  I get the concept - visual advertising is cool(although usually aimed more at men than women, but that's a different thread).  But backing the slogan?  Seems self defacing.  Maybe it's just those in the UK who seem to get it's a mixed message.

I'm not 100% behind that slogan either.  But I like the concept of a atheist ad.  Sadly, it wouldn't work in the US.

Hey if they are willing to pay for the ads and it doesn't cross any legal codes... more power to them.

In truth how is this any different than the signs I've seen on billboards all over the freaking place that basically say if you don't believe in god that you are going to hell?

People in London already know there is no God, they don't need the side of a bus to tell them.

Could this be part of a pharmaceutical (anti-depressant) campaign?  If there is no God, then this means that here and now is all there is.

The two ideas are not mutually exclusive. An afterlife can still exist without a God, and even if there is a God there is no guarantee there is an afterlife.

Ooooh i hope that you are wrong.  The spotted stray kept Moosh's feet warm, and always seemed happy to see him instead of dismissing him as a waste of human flesh.

~fr~

Personally, I don’t believe in freedom of anything; every action taken has a consequence.

As far as how people would react to such advertising here in the US, someone already said it; depends on where it was done.

I think people freaking out about it would just be another fine example of the creation (langue) taking over the creator (man).

And some thought it would be robots; ha!
