RCdc -> RE: There's probably no God...... (10/22/2008 3:20:14 PM)

It's pretty crass and idiotic really.
The yahoo article doesn't give the full poster Phil and probably because of the reasson - it actually reads -  'there probably is no god, now stop worrying and enjoy your life'.

Yeah, 'great' freedom of speech - assuming the negative of a groups of people who have a non belief.  It's been a pretty heated debate here, as it was sponsered by the Humanist society and most humanists and atheists find it a pretty dire interpretation of both their belief and their life.  I pretty much agree with them.

I'm baffled:

a) 'Seems to be a counter-productive advert. For instance, the idea that anxiety can be eradicated on the back of not believing in a god, is bordering on the ridiculous.

b) Why would they do this in England? Let's see, there are 1.6 million church goers in this country; half of these are catholic and half are protestant. The catholic half is swelled by a significant number of Polish migrant workers, and the protestant half by a significant number of African immigrants. So, approximately 800,000 of 55 million natives go to church. Remove those over 65 who won't be alive in twenty years time, and you'll be left with roughly 200,000 of 55 million, or one in every 275ish. We're not exactly running 'round in mobs looking for heretics to burn, so I don't understand why they're wasting their time.

They're not going to argue about it because clearly no one in England has any idea what anyone else in England is saying, what with folks making up their own words and having a minimum of 8 different words for everything. So bufoonbery on that.

..........saw this story on the CBC this morning.  Whether or not one is an aethist this seems to me to be a good example of free speech. How will this story play in the US?

... as for me.. I just think it's sad.

Based on the stories i have ever heard, God may seem to go away for a while, but always seems to come back.

"If you feel removed from God... guess who moved"  (just something I heard once)

It's just the commercial space on London buses - religious groups buy it to promote their message, and since atheism is a belief of sorts... it's only fair. I wonder whether Christopher Hitchens contributed to their war effort [:D] .

I think what I dislike most about atheism is not the disbelief in God.. but the mocking of other's hope.    The Amazing Randy will love it.

Don't mind if I do.....thanks very much.......have some rascality in return....

.....that's as crass a statement as someone saying that all Christians are anti-abortionist nutcases. Just because some aethists mock those with faith doesn't mean they all do.

seeksfemslave -> RE: There's probably no God...... (10/22/2008 4:00:32 PM)

From the POV of free speech it carnt be faulted.
Whether a God exists or not depends upon what you mean by God.
How deep is that perfesser?

If you were to say ...
the probability is low that a God who has much concern for human beings exists...
then I would have to agree with that.
The only problem there is that it wouldnt fit on the side of a bus.Maybe that was God's cunning plan and he does exist after all.

Vendaval -> RE: There's probably no God...... (10/22/2008 4:40:45 PM)

The reactions would depend in part, on the location.  Different regions of the U.S. would likely have different reactions.  And the other consideration would be population size and density.  As an example, a small city in the South would likely have a different response than a large industrialized city in the North.

The Divine is always present, everywhere, in empty outer space, in the searing core of stars, in the billions of neutrino's that pass through our bodies every second. As for the incarnate gods, they walk among us in their multitudes.

Kirata -> RE: There's probably no God...... (10/22/2008 5:13:23 PM)

I see this as the functional equivalent to the Roman Catholic Church putting ads on the sides of busses saying, "Don't worry, Protestants are probably wrong. We had Peter!" Let your imagination run from there. This could be fun!

And don't forget to brush [theme song] with delicious, healthful, Atheist Toothpaste!

corysub -> RE: There's probably no God...... (10/22/2008 5:23:47 PM)

I don't really think a billboard on the side of the bus is really going to influence anyone, but it will attract the media that is looking for something to do to justifiy their existence, and it adds a few dollars to the transport company I guess.  I think the the athiests should change advertising companies...their slogan would have more
impact if it said "There IS no God" rather than "Their probably is no God"..

...strictly speaking, no. As the existence of God is neither empircally provable or not provable, any position vis a vis the existence of God has an element of belief in it.

kittinSol -> RE: There's probably no God...... (10/22/2008 6:17:46 PM)

Which is why agnoticism is such a hard position to defend, because it's the furthest away from belief available to me so far. I wouldn't dream of advertising it on the number 12 though [8D] .

OK, i can't help myself.

Is someone who believe's there's probably no God a "Maytheist"?

kittinSol -> RE: There's probably no God...... (10/22/2008 8:01:31 PM)

If they call themselves that... why not? Everything is possible in this world where there may or may not be, or where there is no way or knowing one way or another :-) .

Trystan89 -> RE: There's probably no God...... (10/22/2008 8:03:46 PM)

I'm an atheist, but I think that's a little silly.  I mean it's a little too . . . evangical, isn't it? [:'(]
