A tens unit sends a superficial charge across the muscle, usually making it contract and release. A violet wand creates a superficial charge of static electricity that runs across the top of the skin (although some units can be pretty strong they usually aren't strong enough to cause a muscle to contract). Violet wands are 'pretty' because you can see the current. Tens units don't.
