Kirata -> On What Basis Will You Choose? (10/24/2008 11:34:13 PM)

Nobody has time to study every detail of every issue, and there is no guarantee that a candidate will actually do what he says anyway. So I've decided to judge the candidates by their supporters, and vote for the candidates who, along with their supporters, are most often subjected to disrespect or worse. Because I have finally realized that I cannot feel comfortable voting for candidates who get so much support from people who treat their fellow citizens with utter contempt.

Oh good Lord, we don't have partisanship and contemptuous rhetoric comparable to past elections in this country.  Read your history, people used to stuff ballot boxes, use violence against political opponents, and tell worse lies about their opponents.  We have it easy compared to voters in the 19th Century and over half of the 20th Century.  The things we have seen are child's play compared to what our forefathers went through.

I've already voted, and I voted for President based on the record of both individuals.  Both can say what they are going to do until they are blue in the face.  It's politics and it doesn't amount to a hill of beans.  Neither knows what they will do in the next four years, because anything can happen in the next four years.  The only real measure we have for either is their records.  McCain has a record, and a fairly good one IMO.  Obama does not.

That is very true. And by the same token, people living under the heel of totalitarian regimes shouldn't complain because if it was Ghengis Khan they'd be dead.

We don't live under a totalitarian regime, and you are free to complain all you want.  Elections are nasty, and they always have been.  All I am saying is that it's not a new phenomenon.  You made the assertion that you would base your choice on the candidate's supporters.  I think that's foolish, but you vote how you want to.  I look at the candidate's history; I pay very little attention to the political soccer hooligans who enjoy picking fights.

Kirata,

I certainly hope that you will utilize more opinions than just what you find in these forums. There is such a small sampling here and without body language to temper them, words often get heated due to, I believe, the passion that the voters here have for their country.

As to the thread itself, I believe it will be, ultimately, self-defeating. You'd probably be better served if you go to past posts and garner opinions that way if this is your chosen form of decision making.

People put on their good clothes when they go to Sunday School, after all.

For what it's worth, I'm voting Obama because I think, at this point in time and history, he will serve this country best fiscally, culturally, socially, intellectually, militarily and environmentally. I believe he will be the best man to meet our offshore concerns with other nations and be able to work with them in an calm and efficient manner so as to enhance our image and thereby make it easier for our nation to grow and to trade with foreign entities to our benefit. Too, I think his race does play a role in this election and I don't know why people seem to be a bit wary to speak about it. I've heard it said that this country may not be ready for a black president. Hell, Obama himself said it.. with the qualifier that if we're not ready now, we won't be ready in his lifetime .. and the only real answer I have to that is .. we're not only ready, we're are well past due .. about 200 years past due and this man has most, not all, of the qualities that I want in a president and his race is a plus to take that baby step towards getting rid of racism once and for all. It has got to be the most pointless exercise and waste of energy to hate on someone because DNA and the amount of melanin someone has within it. It's time to move past that and Obama can help in that regard. One day, maybe we'll elect someone equally as good for this country who is of a religion which is in a minority in this country. Maybe a Muslim or a Buddist or someone Jewish.. doesn't matter. And one day, hopefully, we'll elect a women who will finish the job of shattering that glass ceiling that Ferraro picked at and Hillary cracked .. but, it has to be someone for whom those things are merely incidentials because they are the best person for the job. That's how I view Obama .. and that's why he has my vote.

For me it comes down to which candidate I want shaping the Supreme Court.  This is one of the biggest issues of this election.

Something to think about

Elisabella -> RE: On What Basis Will You Choose? (10/25/2008 3:11:16 AM)

Agreed, Katy. I'm guessing there will be at least one vacancy in the next 4 years to be filled. I can only hope that if McCain does get elected, all the rhetoric about Roe v Wade being overturned turns out to be true.

I'd love to see a day where intentional feticide is treated like the homicide it is. The chances that McCain will accomplish that are slim, but the chances that Obama will are nonexistent.

You've already stated that "McCain has a record... Obama does not," which plainly voids that option as a basis for choosing between them. You are just rationalizing a choice you made for other reasons.

To keep it really simple, i am more to vote for a person who asks for my vote, rather than simply presuming it.  i deal with salespeople the same way.

LadyEllen -> RE: On What Basis Will You Choose? (10/25/2008 4:37:21 AM)

The real choice here is governed by the regrettable fact that much of what will happen over the next four years will be due to extraneous forces over which the President, indeed the whole legislature can have no appreciable influence.

This makes the choice rather one of attitude and approach in steering the people calmly and authoritatively on a steady course through difficult times and carrying them through and bringing them out the other side with hope and inspiration for the future.

There is only one candidate for President that meets that criterion, and it isnt McCain.

And like it or not, your choice affects the rest of the western world too, and especially the UK; we need someone in the Whitehouse who will not only calmly handle the problems of the US and inspire the US, but whose presence and character will produce the same effects throughout the western world.

Everything else can be going to hell,  but if Roe v Wade gets over turned life is good.

Someone please save us from that lunacy

My vote is a vote of confidence in a candidate. I have no confidence in Obama or McCain. So i looked for somebody that i did have confidence in.

SilverMark -> RE: On What Basis Will You Choose? (10/25/2008 5:07:19 AM)

At least this time there is a difference in the candidates that is real enough to be seen. I think in the last 8 years my personal bias has become so large that I'd vote for anyone not connected in any way to Bush and his policies. I have seen my business start to wither and my worries increase to a point of distraction. I find myself searching for that one piece of good news that I can hold some hope in. I worry and have never really worried before. For the first time in my life I lack a bit of confidence in my ability to change my business fortunes and find it tougher and tougher to think I can. I have developed a bunker mentality and have never thought there would come a day I could not go out and conquer the business world and make the difference in what happens in my financial life and those who work for me and depend on me. There have never been outside forces that I thought I could not control and make growth happen even when times got tough. There will be no bail out for my company, no golden parachute as I lay off great people and no credit available unless I wish to sell my soul and my home...the worst part is that I have equity in my stores and still the risks are too high for anything aside from the most desperate measures. I will figure it out if there is some calm restored to the external world and I think for that to take place there must be dynamic personal leadership....needless to say I have already chosen and to whom my vote goes to.

No kidding, wouldn't that would be a nice feeling, to see someone running that makes you feel like they know what they are doing (or going to do). Too bad we don't have that choice this time around, at least not what I see of the major candidates.

thishereboi -> RE: On What Basis Will You Choose? (10/25/2008 5:12:06 AM)

I am going to wait for the morning of the election and flip a coin. I have my lucky penny standing by as I type this.

For me my vote for McCain is as easy as those of you voting for Obama.  He defines more of the America I love and want to maintain.  I don't believe you change countries by destroying what has made it what it is today...a place where millions of people choose to come to and don't choose to leave.  With all its warts and scabs, we have the best country in the world. Obama believes he has a Messianic like destiny, his  "salvation" is based on his ability to change us all...that the country is built from the bottom up.  Seriously, how many jobs have people at the bottom created, how many new industries have grown out of the "make work" projects of government. Sure the democrats talk about "investing" in the future of America..but governments don't "invest"..they "SPEND...after the powers that be take their vig, put pals in high paying jobs..and waste the fruits of american labor.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the future under Obama:

Both sides have people that support them that they cringe at.

I mean just yesterday this whacked chick carved a backwards B in her face so that she could claim she was attacked by Obama supporters.

I would think it would be better to judge a person based upon the company they personally keep.

Example... John McCain left his first wife for a rich broad that could help his career...
