Most of the time when I see male lesbian it is one of two things. Trying to make sure everyone knows they have absolutely no interest in other males, or trying to see how many more searches they can come up on. Very infrequently have I ever seen it honestly used by a pre or post op, since the majority of them do not wish to be classed as male any longer at all (in my experience at least)
There are also the handful of males that think that by calling themselves a male lesbian they have a better chance at hooking up with a bisexual or lesbian mistress, without the understanding that they want a female who is female, not a lesbian regardless of gender.

Does it follow that there can be female gays?

This is confusing...

I've just tried researching this but am little the wiser.  Beyond definitions that relate to actual physical characteristics (as discussed by faerytatoodgirl, beargonewild and others), only one thing makes sense to me.  This is the idea of a man who feels so 'feminine' (whatever that means to him) that he's 'more like a lesbian than a man' (again, whatever, the word "lesbian" means to him in terms of personality characteristics).

Beyond that, I just develop a headache thinking about it.

I have a friend who sometimes jokes that he's a male lesbian, because he tends to be attracted to lesbians. He's definitely not trans or even feminine... but he's happily (one might even say smugly) married to a woman who generally prefers women to men.

I think it's cute. However, I would look a bit askance at anyone who used the term seriously, without being trans.

People want terms to explain themselves to others - I am a self defined "girlie/boy", others feel comfortable with Trans, Hetero, etc.  I think the important thing is to distinguish when a person is being joking or facetious about it and when they are seriously trying to use a term to describe how they feel inside.

People should, IMO, be able to define themselves as they choose.

To me, it is simply a joke.

Thank you LT.  I was actually wondering what lesbians thought of this.  Are these guys thinking they can secure a lesbian partner?  If you have been approached by such an induvidual.. "what the hell was he thinin"????
Thanks Faery.. I had considered the situation you described.. what I'm wondering about is the straight guys.. descrbing themselves as such.  I think beargonewild's statement as an identifyer for a guy who just likes pussy might be what is meant.  Keep posting folks, I'm learning :)   (and wondering if I shouldn't identify as a female gay guy... :)

I've heard this term used by men who identify with feminine aspects (or typically dyke behaviors) of themselves.  For example, my current boyfriend is without a doubt a DUDE, yet has the most dyke folk music I've ever seen.  He's pretty in touch with his emotions, thinks butch women are hot, and generally regards women as cool in ways the straight men sometimes miss entirely.  He's completely hetero, yet I hear him talk sometimes and think "he's such a dyke."

Some use the term as a discriptor of attitudes and tastes aligning with dyke culture, not as a commentary on their sexual orientation.

Oh yeah, I've gotten plenty of come on's from het guys that use the line "but I am a male lesbian!". Of course they then follow up wth a laugh and a "just joking". Like they think they are the first to ever use the line and somehow it will turn them into some sort of hot "real" lesbian, in my eyes. I guess...... I dunno. I just laugh and pat them on the head.

After enough years around guys, nothing really surprises me when it comes to their attempts at trying to get a piece of ass.

I used to  use this term , along with " a lesbian trapped in a males body "  my intent was never to down grade or make  fun of or hurt lesbians , i have pals who are lesbians  and after i got  actual feedback from them  i stopped using those references for self description .I love Women , Most all Women  in all shapes  sizes  roles etc .That was also what i was saying when using the terms , yet i found out  for the most part  from speaking to lesbians about this topic they did not like it .Many moons ago when  i was able to travel  for my bdsm  it was  the lesbians who said  sure i will  beat tie and  do bdsm with you with no judgment or agenda and i always valued that .For the most part  they really did not care  for the "boy parts " and worked on all the other aspects  instead .Its not that i just like  pussy , the  one body part  ,its that i love  the Woman and all that she is  . Yet out of respect and reverence and after gaining the feedback i had gotten ,  i ditched the term . I only meant  when using the words to describe, that i was a huge fan , but apparently many did not view it as such .

Fair enough, Otters.  I've had  recent and somewhat intense experience of trying to explain deeper feelings, as I think you've noticed.    It's often a struggle, and we sometimes have to grab whatever words seem even vaguely appropriate.

And this would be  an example of why i don't use the terms  anymore " not striving to be an idiot " .

Oh, it never has offended me. It was more of an eye roll type thing. But then again, I am difficult to offend.

Sorry az it's just people keep redefining what words mean to the point where words have no meaning at all. People say it as a joke I'm sure but some are serious.

I was a male lesbian...
I had a Mistress that made me a lesbian for all practical purposes.  Sexually I did not have a cock.  I was dressed and treated like a girl during our sexual play and contact.   We did not have intercourse unless it involved a strap-on.  I used a strap-on to fuck her vagina and she fucked my ass.   The odd thing about fucking her with the strap on was I also reached orgasm... We did not have male female sexual relations so to speak. Like Bill I could say,  " I did not have sex with that Woman".
