I can't say I understand the logic of putting someone perceived to be hotter than you on your avatar rather than yourself, only to possibly later disapoint.
I would prefer a mediocre avatar presentation, and others being pleasantly surprised that I look same or better in real life.   M

My avatar is way hotter than I could ever be, which is the point of using it. I'm not on CM seeking a dom or master so the image I present doesn't matter in that aspect.

I really don't get the whole 'fakeness' with an avatar concept. They are avatars for a reason. They can represent how someone feels, how they would like to feel etc.

They fall into a similar category as screen names do, they needn't be real.

yep, my legs.  my other profile photo, yep, me and one of the many bears.

Aynne88 -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/27/2008 9:05:21 AM)

Ditto. I also hate it when people's avatars are so "realisitic" looking then you go and perv them and ummmm yeah no. [;)] In seriousness, it is everyone's right to put up what they choose, I prefer for people to see the person behind the comments.

I believe in the concept of true in advertising which is the reason why my avatar is a photo of myself. I'm another who doesn't have to worry about career concerns as I'm self employed and have the attitude that what I do here has no bearing on my working life. I figure that there's no point in disguising my looks as somewhere down the line, I'd get caught trying to hide what I look like! So for me, showing what I do look like bypasses any awkwardness trying to describe myself to someone who's wanting to know what I look like.

Dnomyar -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/27/2008 9:08:58 AM)

Ok the truth be told. I found a wallet laying on the ground and this pic was in it. I thought hey this guy is realy handsome. He is better looking than me. If you know who this person  is tell him I have his wallet. I took the money out of it as my reward.

I agree with this and would post the definition of "avatar" (which should shed light on their purpose on a forum like this)

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/27/2008 11:10:33 AM)

A couple of things strike me in the OP. The first is that, after a quarter-century online, it seems to make sense to me that -any- picture you see on any board should probably be considered as a representation not of the -person-, but of the person's concept of hirself. Because of that, it is irrelevant whether a person uses Tom Cruise, a still from Blazing Saddles, or a landscape, they're all just representations -- having a face doesn't make it any -less- of a representation or any -more- of one... and having one's own picture up, IMO, is -still- nothing more than a single moment in time - a representation of that person at that moment.

I have actual pics of me up on the other side -- it doesn't really matter much, because for most folks, every time they see me, I'll look different. It's just the way I am. On the boards, I have a pic that represents something of how I perceive my energy.

I feel like getting stressed about the avatar thing is like getting stressed because it's raining... it doesn't change anything, and doesn't make life any better, so why dwell on it? If you get to know the person and like hir, you can always ask for pictures -- many times, they'll even be offered. If you meet, you'll see what the person looks like and -is- like (at least under the circumstances of a first meeting) firsthand. Problem solved.

colors Calla's avatar and tries to keep within the lines.

I think we know what it means babes, or need I tell you that ain't me on my avatar.   Of course anyone has the right to choose, and I'm just agreeing with the op, that when I see a human  photo avatar, unless it is of someone massively famous, I tend to think it is the person writing next to it...  No harm done either way in my presumption/potential diaspointment, or the avatar user's choice.   M

MadAxeman -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/27/2008 1:53:43 PM)

Well I have to be honest.
Since Fox cancelled Futurama I have gained an enormous amount of weight due to an overfondness for Langoustines, Trazodone and Abbott Ale.
Therefore I have used an old picture of me when in my prime.

Will work for prawns.

My photo is hugely famous.. I would hope people not think it is actually me. I have a photo on my profile of myself..

I suppose terming someone has :fake" because the choose to use an avatar is kinda strange... especially since I got more people email me when I used my profile photo.. perhaps because it was "real"?

I thought myself less vain for not posting my own photo as an avatar... after all I am not in the market for a mate, so why advertise? I was thinking of yanking all my photos off

FullfigRIMaam -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/28/2008 11:46:09 PM)

Yeah but you actually do look a little like her (and I don't know her), only better.    M

pissthirstysub -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/28/2008 11:59:13 PM)

I chose mine because I didn't want anything that would represent me at all. I just wanted something more apealing then nothing.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/29/2008 1:47:43 AM)

Because if I had to come back as some creature other than myself, I'd love to be the elephant on the left.

If you have a photograph of someone else, be it a model or actress or whomever (not a little cartoon or picture of a landscape or what have you, but an actual photograph of someone who's is not you), why?

puella -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/29/2008 3:21:06 AM)

Hahahaha!

Dnomyar -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/29/2008 4:36:05 AM)

Sorry Lord you will have to stay the Elephant on the right. julia forgive me but what is famous about your photo. I always thought it was you. puella please tell me that your photo is the real you.

puella -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/29/2008 5:50:21 AM)

Haha, yeah it's real..trust me, stars and models do not have pictures with 'hair control' problems hehehe.

zakkan -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/29/2008 5:52:34 AM)

I tried it before, but my photo looks weird when used as an avatar.

And I explained the use of the rose........
*sigh*

GreedyTop -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/29/2008 6:12:50 AM)
