A couple of things strike me in the OP. The first is that, after a quarter-century online, it seems to make sense to me that -any- picture you see on any board should probably be considered as a representation not of the -person-, but of the person's concept of hirself. Because of that, it is irrelevant whether a person uses Tom Cruise, a still from Blazing Saddles, or a landscape, they're all just representations -- having a face doesn't make it any -less- of a representation or any -more- of one... and having one's own picture up, IMO, is -still- nothing more than a single moment in time - a representation of that person at that moment. I have actual pics of me up on the other side -- it doesn't really matter much, because for most folks, every time they see me, I'll look different. It's just the way I am. On the boards, I have a pic that represents something of how I perceive my energy. I feel like getting stressed about the avatar thing is like getting stressed because it's raining... it doesn't change anything, and doesn't make life any better, so why dwell on it? If you get to know the person and like hir, you can always ask for pictures -- many times, they'll even be offered. If you meet, you'll see what the person looks like and -is- like (at least under the circumstances of a first meeting) firsthand. Problem solved.
