puella -> Faking out with avatars (10/26/2008 12:48:59 PM)

Hi all,

I will admit to putting off doing some cleaning, and that that is probably contributing to the randomness of my post, but here goes:

If you have a photograph of someone else, be it a model or actress or whomever (not a little cartoon or picture of a landscape or what have you, but an actual photograph of someone who's is not you), why?

I have noticed lately that some people who prior had no avatar or had a picture of them self for an avatar have opted to change that to a photo of someone else, usually a model/actor who is more idealized in terms of looks than they are.

This could very well be going down a path (my topic, I mean) which I may not which to traverse, but I really am curious as to why you would do that?  Maybe you feel a commonality with a certain celebrity?

Just wondering,

Jen

Perhaps they feel their visual presence is no longer required on the forums since they aren’t looking and would instead like to put up something that displays the kind of things they like.

I have never had a pic up on my profile, so when I went looking for an avatar, I wanted something that represented who I am inside and not necessarily outside, something that no one else was using, something that SPOKE to me.

LOL.  All that flew out the window when I saw the avatar that I use, and I thought, "fuck, that is HOT", and I've used it ever since.

people like to idolize....sometimes with out a meaning behind it
or it is their fantasy to be some one else..to hide in this lifestyle...

Cali... the avatar doesnt do you justice *smooch*

Aneirin -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/26/2008 1:25:54 PM)

I don't hide, what you see as my avatar is me, and I am completeley honest an open with who I am and my interests. If the concern it is of others to hide behind another picture that is not themselves, then they have only themselves to blame if someone likes the avatar, but when seeing the reality is not the same they lose interest.

I am aware whoever and whatever looks into sites like these, and guess what, I don't care, like, if someone sees me, what are they going to do ? Say, oh, you are kinky, my answer, yes, and what of it.

Re my avatar, it will change again soon, just as soon as the delicious .dark. gets at it.

sappatoti -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/26/2008 1:27:13 PM)

I have not created an avatar yet for myself so I choose from the stock available for each discussion board. I try to choose an avatar that best expresses the essence of who I am and what I wish to project.

On some boards, that means selecting from available stock that is made up of celebrity shots. While that isn't optimal in my opinion, I do understand that participants in those boards realize that no one using a celebrity's avatar is claiming to be them. Over the years, I've been William Shatner, Ben Browder, Jan Michael Vincent, and Richard Dean Anderson. (Please don't ask. :-) )

In my case, my selections tie in with one of your own observations: the selection of a particular avatar may be an attempt by the poster to project some characteristic of that celebrity they find valuable at the time.

Luckily, I do not have to choose from a celebrity's photo here on CollarChat.

My avatar is me, but distorted. Reason is, i can;t be out in my line of work. Which is a pest but there you are.

GabrielleSlave -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/26/2008 1:32:24 PM)

if people ask about my pic having seen it on here, well my guess is that they are more than likely as kinky as me so it's cool *shrugs*  There are plenty more sexier pics to choose from on the avatar list, but why hide who i am?  i am not ashamed and i would rather folk see who they are talking to, just as i would prefer to see them, warts n all... Just my thing, not judging anyone else...

It's bizarre: I don't know how else to describe it.

RCdc -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/26/2008 1:37:11 PM)

I haven't done it here, but on myspace or my blogs, for example, when Heath Ledger passed away, I put one of his up as a mark of respect for a week or so.  I have done it for peoples birthdays if I really respect their ideas and if I have a relevant media related issue to post on my blog etc.

Really? I always thought it was a distorted picture of Kurt Cobain :-).

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/26/2008 1:43:33 PM)

I remember someone saying that if someone called them on their presence on the site they'd simply say: "You obviously was on the site to as you saw me there." People forget that some have more to lose than others though. Life is for risk, I often wonder if those people staring at me do so because I look familiar but the world is a lot bigger than that and the chances are slim, I’m probably just paranoid.

...naww, i still got the back of my head....[:D]

bound4more -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/26/2008 1:47:35 PM)

My avatar is me (just kidding). I've never been comfortable broadcasting a picture of myself online except for business. I like to keep this aspect of my life private and yet have access to interactions with others. I simply prefer anonymity.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/26/2008 1:49:12 PM)

I no longer have an active profile here so I can't use a profile photo.  I chose one from the stock avatars that kinda looks like me if I was six feet tall and 100 pounds.

puella -> RE: Faking out with avatars (10/26/2008 2:12:43 PM)

You do know that I love you, right?
