CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez threatened on Saturday to imprison his main political rival, intensifying a campaign against a man he calls a crime boss just a month before he faces tough regional elections.

Opposition leader Manuel Rosales, who lost to Chavez in the 2006 presidential vote, is governor of the oil producing state of Zulia and is running for mayor of its capital Maracaibo.

"I am determined to put Manuel Rosales behind bars. A swine like that has to be in prison," Chavez said.

Umm,what`s the "conservative" obsession with that guy about?

Did he steal their lunch money?

There`s like a thousand world leaders already jailing opponents.

Yet not a peep from "conservatives".

it kinda correlates with who makes life easier vs. making it more difficult. =p if you're a despot who allows our corporations to move in and make skillions without batting an eye, you'll be fine. =p

Owner by the same token, why do liberals defend this douchebag?  Did he blow all of you?  Is he sending hot looking hookers with a free pizza over to y'all's houses?  He's a meglomaniacal loony, and we hear plenty of "peeps" from liberals about how swell he is.

Oil and a convenient US bogeyman, all good stuff for a US invasion of a sovereign nation to bag their swag.

Chavez might not be the smoothest, most sophisticated nor the most honest politician on the planet but he did win three free and fair elections and he won his support because he was seen by the poor to be against the American supported, corrupt and violent precidency of Carlos Andres Perez that supported only the rich. Men like Chavez are not voted into power in a vacuum, there are reasons, usually violence, corruption and oppression.

The whole thing is just sad and yet interesting to me, like seeing a passenger train derailment. We're watching the progression in Venezuela go from Democracy, to electing this far left cult-of-personality type leader, and from there almost straight to the brink of totalitarianism that they're teetering on right now.

This particular article though, reminds me of that crazed woman who rushed the stage recently where Karl Rove was speaking to try to arrest him on some imaginary charges, and how all of this ties in with the millions and millions who have died in Communist gulags while under arrest on trumped up charges essentially amounting to thought crimes of political dissent.

Hopefully Venezuela is about to turn around but regrettably, in my opinion, the United States is headed in that same direction. How many in the United States would support the arrest and imprisonment of the Bush administration, for example? It seems that a Conservative can't try to exercise his or her right to speak these days without some far left ideologues rushing the stage or unfurling a banner while screaming and trying to force them to shut up. Democrats in Congress are set to shut down talk radio with the new "Fairness Doctrine" law, and so on.

The left - right hatred runs deep, and it's irrational in many cases. I once thought it couldn't happen here but regrettably, I now know that I was wrong.

Not a surprise, is it!  That's what radical socialists do, consolidate power, destroy the opposition and control peoples lives.

If you have ever been to south America you would know why there are problems and why there is a left-right hatred. The vast majority of people are dirt poor, exploited, suppressed and oppressed by the rightwing rich. When the poor get a hero or as you might call him, a leftwing demi-god, they back him because they have nothing to lose and that is the problem. If the rich and many rich in South America are super rich and they got rich through exploitation, corruption and oppression, if they spread a little wealth around, alleviated poverty a little, instead of hiding behind their gated luxury residences and killing the poor when they get restless because they want something to eat or clothes for their back, maybe a healthy democracy could develope.

It blows my mind that the fairness doctrine is an issue.   more education is needed in the USA.  we are becoming the dumbest people on the planet-= how about it?

I dont know why I am asking this- but if an entire war is waged on false pretenses, how is that what we as a people want, allow, endorse, and by inaction, the blood is on our hands?

Look- I am all for myself having modern luxuries, and I dont care if we manipulate other countries toward ME having comfort.  BUT, at a certain point, the self has to say- maybe what we dish out to others will come back and happen to we ourSELF.

How is it tha LIES are good?

Sanity- take your effort and get US spending pared down to the bone.   Cut military spending in half.

Like others here- you dont offer much in the line of solutions.

YOU, as like others are simply a pawn in the game of the big boys.

The best talent of a country is its own people. Of course I like to control my own money.  That Chavez is trying to do for his country. I think it is wrong- but that is up to the folks that live there.  NOT ME.

I think it is time for the states to break off.  Secceed.  States have no automamy, no rights, no self rule.  The state I live in, is much better governored then the fed.

Every event on the planet is not my business.

Paying a few cents less for stuff is fine.  Slaughtering people who dont dance as we pull the stings?   Is not right.

THOU SHALL NOT KILL.

THOU SHALL NOT LIE

THOU SHALL NOT COVET THY NEIGHBORS OXEN OR ASS [ ie oil]

We do all 3.  Not as a side effect but as the main event.

I want a good quality of life- but iron fisted governance is not the way.

If everyone has a tidy yard- it makes for a tidy neighborhood.

I have no right to intrude on my neighbor- and vice versa.

Ill be back later. Im going to bestow  "freedom" on the neighbor in back.

I think you enjoy not understanding why there are reactions against the rightwing in S America. Go there. Look at the poverty, the exploitation, the subjugation of the poor. Look at the super rich hidden in their villas behind high fences, with private armies to protect them from the people they have robbed. Only rightwing Americans could possibly not see the injustice that causes the lurch of the poor towards the far left. America loves South American dictators and murderers, as long as they are of the rightwing variety of course. I don't remember Americans complaining about Pinoche or Galteiri when they were murdering their own people. Chavez isn't murdering his own people but do you notice how he gets more of a reaction from America than the two mass murderers did?

Danny Harry and Sean.

Wow that`s huge.I didn`t know.Run for the hills...lol

I see an obsession w/ Hollywood by
"conservatively leaning individuals",too.

Big whoop.I meant politicians,btw.Not just folks the "conservative leaning indaviduals" have branded as libs,err liberals.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How many "individuals who lean towards the conservative view point" know that Bush helped the coup plotters who overthrew Hugo in '2000'?Only to look like a world class jerk when the coup failed.
Any?
