I buy a variety of things on-line.  Books, music, hair styling products, coffee syrup.  My most recent purchase was a remote for my car satellite radio receiver.  I usually buy from Ebay, Amazon, Alibris.  I shop on-line because of the pricing and because it's easy and I don't have a lot of time for shopping.

I used to work for an e-tailer, and there were people with ebay stores that just just sold their stuff at a mark-up. So, you buy from the ebay store, they placed the order and the place I worked shipped it direct, so they made a profit for marketing stuff without actually holding any inventory.

Anyway, among stuff I've bought are bicycle parts, flea killer for my cats, books, dvds.

I think there is a greater profit margin selling in local papers. You can always score quality used stuff from freecycle

If you get stuff off of Freecycle and resell it, that is against that site's policy, and you could be banned.
Not to mention, that's just bad karma waiting to happen.

Now to answer the question of what I buy on eBay: Brighton shoes, Murano glass, antiques, and hard to find collectibles.

What I buy online = everything. But mostly through Amazon. We have Amazon Prime, which gives us free two day shipping and four dollar next day shipping. No matter how much the item weighs.

lusciouslips19 -> RE: Either new or used,What do you buy online? (10/28/2008 8:21:30 AM)

I buy from Amazon, Overstock and Ebay.

Lushy, Making money that is worth your time and effort on e-bay is much harder than many peeps think. My ex has been e-bay selling for years and it has gotten less profitable each year.

To begin with, you need a "niche" product. Not so easy considering how most everything is available online now. Secondly, there is the problem , and cost, of acquiring said product and storing it and then packing and shipping it. Internet shoppers have come to expect next day , or, at least fast, delivery. Finally, since fuel costs have gone up ( even though gas pump prices are lower now ), shipping costs have sky rocketed, cutting into profit significantly. FedEx and UPS rates are way up.

I don't mean to discourage you , I'm just suggesting you do your homework carefully and thoroughly.

Good luck, darlin' !

Remember, there is always the seasoned panty angle.

this is a VERY tough thing to do....i would seriously re think this.  especially now with the money issues that the world is currently having...ok..that usa is currently having.

i know someone who does it as a biz on the side of his sports card shop.  he has to post THOUSANDS of items and most are 1 dollar or less.  the only way to make money on ebay is to post a ton of items.  a normal household person would have trouble doing this as it takes a ton of time and labor.  especially with the packaging and going to the post office (which takes gas and car) and making sure the right person gets the correct item.

then there is the issues with exchange rate...and things like paypal.

im not saying it cant be done by one person....like yourself.  im just saying it needs to really be thought long and hard over...

now then i simply buy cd's.  this way if someone rips me off for 15 bucks..i dont care very much.  though i have mainly only bought now directly from the band thru their myspace sites...i just find ebay that people charge wayyyyyy too much for shipping costs.

If it wasn't a challange, there would be no point in trying it.

I am a E-Bay dealer, http://myworld.ebay.com/david3764
I took a break earlier in the year when the economy fell flat on its face, and I had a lot of spare time before busy season at work. No one was buying. I use to list 25 items a week and sell 22. Then I was listing 25 and could not even sell 5. I still had to pay for the ads when things did not sell. I was selling antiques and collectibles. I guess people were putting their spare money in their gas tanks instead of buying old things. When I restart selling things, I will try to sell things people need for everyday use. I will be carefully on selling rare items in the auction format, it is a buyers market now, you could nearly give valuable things away with the auction selling gamble.

Dependable, honest drop-shippers are very difficult to find.  Remember it is YOUR reputation, not theirs if they fail to properly service your customers, or sell shody merchandise.   DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

eBay is making it almost impossible for the small seller to compete. Just try competing when your listing doesn't show up in most searches.
And when they tell the buyers that 4 stars is good, but they tell the sellers that it is not acceptable, and then suspend their accounts.
When they put a limit on shipping charges that is less than the seller pays to send the item.
When they raise final value fees 15%.
It's not worth it anymore.
Otoh, you can get some really good deals from the people who are closing down shop, (sadly)
