Hey.......not nice.

Thankfully I have never been accused of being nice.

Though I've also never been accused of living in NJ, thank God.

It's staying unseasonably warm here in the Denver area... mid-70s for weeks. (Can I tempt you, Aileen?) But I know it ain't gonna last...

I have some relatives in Golden...They love to call in the winter and tease me on how much warmer it is in Golden than St Louis...of course the next day they have a foot of snow and -5 degrees. You guys have some wild weather swings there.

Glad to hear your wood stove heating is working well, Aileen. Is the heat forced air ? I'm seriously considering using wood heat in my future dream home.

Btw, quit whining about the snow, put on your cute snow suit , go outside and build a snowman or ambush the mailman with snowballs. In the meantime, I'm gonna head to the pool and work on my tan.

I'd rather have colder and snowier winters than what we have in Kentucky - 37 degrees and raining. Ugh, cold mud, and humidity that seeps deep into your bones. I'd rather be either further south in warmer climes, or in places where it gets colder so the ground freezes, the humidity lowers and the water from the sky doesn't soak you but instead brushes off.

Wood heat has its plusses. I've been heating home and shop exclusively with wood for 8 years. But it is far from free. A lot of work to cut trees from my own woodlot, to move and haul, to cut, split and stack, to feed the stove several times a day, chimney maintainence, etc. Still, I love the radiant heat source. I've also got a Scandinavian style wood burning sauna that borders on a spiritual experience.

Yeah, I love wood heat.

Cjan, there are alot of options for "appliances" to use. What kind of research have you been doing on it?

You know what's not fair?  When it's 54 degrees in the morning, and I have to put on tights and a pair of shoes that go with those, because it's chilly and all... and then at lunch I have to take off the tights and switch to sandals, because the afternoon high is... 85 degrees.

Cjan...we're using this to heat about 7000 square feet and love it.  No smoke or soot in the house.   Throw a few logs on in the morning.  A few logs in the evening and that's it.  We've been getting all of our wood for free.  Just finished cutting and splitting about 8 cords that were given to us.  So far it's using much less wood than we expected (about 8 logs a day) and the time to load it only takes about ten minutes a day.  We used it over the summer to heat the pool.  Took only 13 hours to heat 13,000 gallons to 85 degrees.  Lovely.  I highly recommend it.

It's 45 here in southwest Arkansas.  It got down in the mid 30's last night, and it's supposed to be cold again tonight.  But tomorrow, it's supposed to back up in the 70's.  Autumn is my favorite time of year.  Not too cold, and not too hot.  I start wishing for cold weather in mid June down here.  100% humidity and temperatures in the 90-100+ range  from June till September will cure you of hating snow.

Two weeks ago I was out in Reno, Nevada with a Navy buddy of mine and his wife for a ship's reunion (U.S.S. Truckee) in the new Lincoln MKS. (See pics in profile)
We had planned on visiting Yellowstone National Park on the way back but the weather said they got 3-4 feet of early snow.
They said it was the "earliest snow" in years, right at the beginning of Oct.
So Mz Mia's right about the Farmer's Almanac and an early, snowy winter.

cj, if you don't have me blocked, listen up. The way to heat efficiently is to somehow seperate the flue from the heat. The trick is a carefully calibrated flue, possibly adjustable.

You must maintain a negative air pressure to draw in the needed oxygen for combustion, but if it is too much it does two things. First of all half your heat goes out the flue, secondly if it creates too much negative air pressure and every tiny draft in the house is magnified.

I notice the newer high efficiency gas furnaces have an outside air vent to bring in fresh air for combustion, and the reason is to not create that vacuum that will pull in cold air from around every door and window in the place, which is of course counterproductive. I see no reason that this principle can't be applied to wood burning. It would be a simple matter of running a PVC pipe down the flue to provide the fresh air.

For years there have been fireplace inserts which do provide a controlled flue, and allow you to burn wood or whatever, utilize the radiant heat and not create such a strong vacuum. They have been on the market for decades. The enhancement of, which does seem ironic, bringing in the cold outside air for combustion would make such things even more efficient.

I really like sitting around a fireplace, a nice one. My Uncle had one and it was great but when the party was over it got shut down and the furnace was turned back on, why ? Because while it would heat the immediate area it would bring a chill into the rest of the house because of the negative air pressure. Things may have been different when people had no choice and lived in a one room log cabin, but in a modern house it just doesn't work all that well.

Yes, if this house were bigger, I might seriously consider installing a fireplace. I know a guy who can do it, and he owes me money and he would do it right and give me a good deal. That would just be pretty much for fun though, I would not consider it a major source of heat for the whole house. Like my Uncle, it was fun, put the fire out, close the damper and turn the furnace back on, it's getting to be bedtime.

I can tell you from experience though, it is nice to grab your blankey and sleep in front of a fireplace on a bearskin rug. Thing is, I don't think you can just do that every day in modern times. There are too many problems. Maybe not so much in a one room shack, but in a modern dwelling it is alot less desirable.
