MasterLynxx -> I keep my sub awake all night. Not in the good way. (10/29/2008 8:15:31 AM)

Hey again everyone. Since my last post I've been doing alright, but now I've hit another problem. My kitten can't get any sleep because I can't stop tossing and turning in bed. At this moment the only way to fix this is to sleep in separate beds, and that isn't something I like the sound of. Has anyone else had this problem? If you have how did you fix it? or did you just get a bigger bed or let your pet sleep in a different bed?

Three Answers.

New Bed with Memory Foam and Individual pocketed inner springs

Start Taking a Mild Non Habit Forming Sleeping Aid

Wear Her Out befrore you go to sleep (I.E. High Impact Aerobic Tantra Sex)

I am a Tosser and a Turner as well these things all calmed it down but eventually andi just learned to work around it and everything is fine now.

I would let Fox sleep in a different bed if it were a temporary thing. Getting a bigger bed doesnt necessarily help when your partner is tossing and turning. Id also be looking into the reason I am sleeping so badly all of the sudden, since it sounds to me at least as if this is a new occurrence.
When my back acts up, and I simply cannot sleep with someone else present, Fox and I sleep separately. When the problem is gone, we sleep together again. Allowing him in my case, her in yours, to sleep thorough the night is more important than the comfort of having them there. Having her gone might also stop your tossing, sometimes part of that comes from reactions to someone elses motion in the bed. Let her sleep in another bed and see if you still toss. If so, See a doctor about what could be causing it, and how to stop it. Sometimes its as simple as needing a better mattress or different pillows, sometimes it is an actul problem that n eeds to be addressed by a medical professional or a symptom of a larger one.

Best of luck to you and yours
DV

Thanks for the quick replies. The new bed thing is something I've been wanting to do, problem is I'm a bit broke having to pay for food and such. I'm a college student, so yea, that explains that. Do you know what sleeping aid would be good Steel? Like, a brand name or anything like that?

And vamp, I actually think I toss and turn and have done so for a few years, I'm not sure though, all I know is I don't remember doing it at all. But it wakes her so I know I do it.

Not a Master but have a suggestion. *forgive me if I am overstepping*   Try using Breath right or similiar generic *much cheaper*  ...for a few days..see if that helps.      good luck...nejisty

Melatonin from Wal-Greens works well I like the Purple Lid one.

Also Tylenol PM if you take one it helps, 2 deep sleep, 3 damn near coma. I like them for when I ache but no matter how long I sleep with them I wake up feeling sore.

And when All Else Fails I try NyQuill Because it knocks my ass right out, but then again I don't Drink.

The Melatonin is about as Natural as you can get because it is a Chemicle the body naturally produces it just doesn't always produce enough for whatever reason. If you plan on using it all the time I would go with the Melatonin and give yourself about three weeks to notice a serious change.

Take Care.

You might try something as simple as switching sides of the bed You sleep on....or turning the mattress over to the other side. It's worth a shot.

I'll try the melatonin, thank you steel. Any other suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated.

And cinmin, thank you very much for your reply. I may suggest that, but we do like our sides of the bed very much, her closer to the door, me to the window and air vent for the AC. But we may try it, and my mattress is one of the nonturnover ones.

Rover -> RE: I keep my sub awake all night. Not in the good way. (10/29/2008 9:29:50 AM)

Sounds like your tossing and turning is a bit more than the ordinary to cause a problem like that.  It could be that you're trying to treat the symptoms, while leaving the underlying problem unresolved.

Are you over weight?  Do you snore?  Is there any chance you may have sleep apnea?

If so, you may have a very dangerous medical condition that requires medical attention.

ROVER got it right.  You may well have sleep apnea (it is NOT only found in overweight persons, but the combo of overweight, over 40, diabetic and snoring is a near sure prescription).  You also could have one of the several neuro-muscular disorders known as "RLS" or restless leg syndrome.  The key is a sleep study, performed in a sleep center overnight.  I know you mentioned that money was tight -- do you have any insurance available at all?  A sleep study is billed at about $4000, with interpretations (the actual reimbursement is of course much less).  If you can't get it done on insurance, you might look at local university med schools.

Apnea, and the related complex of sleep disorders, is the "polio" of our time -- pervasive, deadly and just now being studied.  It is insidious.  You need to get checked out.

If a new bed is currently unaffordable, the memory foam (At least 3") should rejuvenate the sleeping space.  Try overstock.com for good prices.  They also have bill me later, so you canmake payments.  Different pillows may help, as someone suggested.  I have a water pillow, memory foam pillows, body pillows, etc.; try different ones to see if that affects a positive change for you.  Chamomile tea can berelaxing (Though I don't like the texture).  Valerian can also help but be careful with that as it can be habit forming.  No computer or TV at least an hour before bed.  Also, some aromatherapeutic stuff: lavender is a big soothing fragrance.  Possibly some 'white noise' or soft music.

P.S.--Just saw Rover's suggestions about sleep apnea.  I had a bf who had sleep apnea.  I never got a good night's sleep when sleeping with him; it's truly disconcerting to have someone stop breating over and over and over again for extended periods of time next to you.   It doesn't always manifest that obviously.  It's worth checking into because untreated sleep apnea can substantially shorten your life.  Good luck with everything!

camille65 -> RE: I keep my sub awake all night. Not in the good way. (10/29/2008 9:56:29 AM)

I think its important to find out 'why' you toss and turn all night long. It could be a medical issue like RLS (restless leg syndrome), sleep apnea etc. If you are tossing/turning all night you aren't getting the real sleep you need and for sure the person next to you isn't.

For several years I slept in another bed or on the couch because I have RLS and my then husband had sleep apnea. I would wake up and move to another sleeping place, then back to the bed etc. Lack of sleep impacted both of us but it really did help when I slept separately from him. The best thing for me was to go to sleep before him because with his snoring I had to.

If you can, save up for a doctors appointment to rule out any medical issues because some sleep problems like apnea are dangerous.

Well, according to my kitten I do gasp and gurgle a bit at night, and I did snore before I got those breathe rite strips, which work wonders, help me get more air and i feel better with them on, but yea, I could have weak sleep apnea, or it could be mild, either way, I never just outright stop breathing. How would they test for RLS and sleep apnea?

antipode -> RE: I keep my sub awake all night. Not in the good way. (10/29/2008 10:53:30 AM)

Hardly a BDSM problem. See a doctor, rather than be silly and handle medical problems online. Could be all sorts of things, from sleep apnea to allergies and beyond.

Just as a little aside, I snored also and had various sleep disturbances. My slavegirl finally made me (*laughs* sorry, I couldn't resist) go in and see the doctor and presto... $150 copay and a horrible two weeks in recovery and my deviated septum is repaired along with a general roto-rooter sort of treatment to sinuses. I breath and sleep better. So if the breathe rite strips worked for you, you might see your doctor and find out if there's anything mechanically wrong in your nose (assuming you have health coverage). Just more food for thought.

Oh yeah, and what antipode said... bringing medical questions to a BDSM forum... well... *laughs*

Your insurance company or campus doctors should be able to refer you to a sleep specialist.  They can then recommend a sleep test.  It is expensive, but insurance will pay for it.  What they do is attach a bunch of electrodes on your head and body.  They put a mike on your throat and a band around your chest.  The mike picks up snoring.  The band measures breathing.  The electrodes measure all kinds of stuff, like RLS.  It shouldn't be hard to get a referral based on what you've said.  So I'd recommend it.  I suffered needlessly for years thinking I just didn't sleep well.  It sucks having to sleep with a plastic mask on, but I can't express to you the difference it makes if you have apnea.  And the RLS pill is great.  Virtually no side effects on me.  It does make you a little sleepy, but you are taking it at bedtime anyway.

tweedydaddy -> RE: I keep my sub awake all night. Not in the good way. (10/29/2008 4:59:25 PM)

I think you need a much bigger bed.
As an ex marine I am subject to night terrors and can wake up in a pretty hairy state. I taught my wife to keep a glass of water by the side of the bed to throw at me if I wake up screaming, it works. Oddly enough it works like a charm.
Just to show you that the Dom can have to sleep in the wet patch now and then.

Racquelle -> RE: I keep my sub awake all night. Not in the good way. (10/29/2008 5:04:19 PM)

See your doctor and ask about a sleep study.  If you are already using breathe-right strips, still gasp and gurgle, and toss and turn - really, how much more in the way of sleep disturbances do you or kitten need?
