I was 7, and my parents took me to the Midway at the State Fair, where I saw my very first tattooed man, and my very first flame-swallower. Then, when I was 11, I saw a documentary on Sun Ceremony, and they talked about the warriors piercing their chests with sticks tied to a pole, and dancing around the pole with no food and no drink until they ripped themselves free... and the same year, I saw a film in World History about the Maori, and their intricate tattoos... I was hooked. Of course, I was also the only kid in my grade school who -liked- getting the TB test done, and who didn't mind giving blood (except for arterial blood gasses, which hurt goldarnit!... and not in a good way!)
