Perhaps bring a friend to the first few meetings?

That doesn't work for casual relationships, play meets etc.  Personally, I wouldn't want someone else there.

Soft was not my safe call by the way, my safe call would not have been able to do a thing.

This contradicts your op, and this is what confused me about this incident.

Friends helping friends, is one thing, having selected someone as a safecall that is powerless if things go wrong is yet another bad choice.

We all have friends and relatives that we can rely on at a whim, however I would not personally put one of mine through that ordeal.

Maybe I am too independant in my actions, but I agree with others postings about being organised especially regarding travelling 6 hours from home, with just a rail ticket and an address.

Fast Reply to no one in particular....

As it relates to those that engage in casual play (which is a sizeable percentage of the BDSM population), there are advantages for being active in the local dungeon/community in that there is a level of "supervision".  No, someone is not going to take control of your activities.  Just monitor them so that it remains consensual, and to provide help if an unforseen accident should occur, or a medical emergency should arise.
