I grew up in what would vbe seen as an upper class 50's home because it was in the early 50's that I have my strongest childhood memories. (I was born 1945). Yet I am aware that our home was not the norm because it was also an aristocratic home which followed strictly the rules and protocols of the mid to late Victorian Era. This not withstanding, certainly people were far more conscious of their apperiance and were more house proud than most are today. Visiting was an event in which people took care to look their best even in fashionalable "Casual" wear (cravates were the mode in place of a tie). When receiving guests, every effort was made to ensure the home was spick and span as well as everyone was well presented and guests were welcomed. All this care showed not just a pride in ourselves but the respect and pleasure we have in our friends and guests (as demonstrated by taking the time to be well presented in their honour). This was not a class thing and as I remember there was little difference in the welcome a guest received no matter if her were a labourer, tradesman or a member of the aristocrasy. All were treated with the same respect and graciousness by my family and servants.I remember Mother commenting to me as a result of my questioning something, that you never knew if the person knocking on the door was a member of the family, a neighbour, a tradesman or even Her Magesty dropping in for a cup of tea (which did happen on two occasions), it was important to always be prepared.
