I mean, if they've been at this for 400 years or so, you'd think they'd have long ago set up everything just the way they want it, and everyone who questioned them would have long since been carried off by Gurkha troops in black helicopters in the middle of the night.
To my mind, the thing about conspiracy theories is that they are subconsciously comforting- The idea that the War Department knew about the impending attack on Pearl Harbor but allowed it to happen to serve their nefarious ends is much less frightening than the possibility that all of us, right to the president, were deceived by the Japanese. The same thing is true with 9-11 conspiracies. I suspect that is the case with Illuminati believers as well- all of these mythologies hinge on the idea that somebody at the top really has it all figured out, and bad things happen simply because they allow it.
Reality is somewhat different. The U.S. Government is a lot like Upton Sinclair's meat-packaging industry- it stays in business, but if you look behind the scenes it is a dreadful, lumbering, horrendously disorganized disaster. It only looks good when it's standing next to the U.N. :)
I have several problems here the most notable of which is that we are ALL conspiracy theorists. Any act that requires any planning is a conspiracy like conspiracy to commit a crime. Criminalist who investigate these are conspiracy theorists.
The problem with decifering theories is the comfort found in the knee-jerk acceptance of govts. conspiracy theories which is all they are when it tells you the equivalent of 'little green men' did it. One of the best examples is the 9/11 commission's conspiracy theory that two (2) 60-100 ton jetliners...vaporized into thin air on that tragic day. This is particulalry interesting after Rumsfeld told a news conference that the flight over Pa.....was shot down. (Don't go there please, it's all over youtube)
Or the Warren commission's conspiracy theory that a lone average at best shooter got off 3 almost perfect rounds at a moving target.
You see now it's easy and healthy to be a conspiracy theorist, if only because it also easy for our govt. to be crazy conspiracy theorists. Gee, without them, we wouldn't have all of these crazy citizen conspiracy theorists.
