I've seen the Ray-O-Vac and Energizer farms.  The way they force all those "D" batteries to breed relentlessly to keep our remote controls fed with double- and triple-A's is heartless.  And ya know those little round batteries for watches and hearing aids?  Aborted battery fetuses!  But you don't hear PETA complaining about that...

:D  :D  :D

candystripper -> RE: Where's PETA When They're Needed? (11/4/2008 8:01:27 PM)

I think the whole business of 'animal rights' as presented by extremists is just damned stoopid.  For one, in a fire if you can't tell whether to save me or my parakeets first, you are tooooooo  stooooopid to be a firefighter.

What makes the positions taken by the extremeists so ethically bankrupt *IMO* is the surrreptious ill effects they have on animals in real life.

I don't really care why you are dumping some domesticated animal off 'in the woods', if I catch you we willl face off, and like IK and Dnyomar, ya, I'll be happy to take my chances in the courts later.  I think there's a special place in Hell reserved for anyone who commits acts of animal cruelty

Good luck getting assault charges filed, ya dumbass, since ya snunk around to do the vile act so you cannot find a witness.

ROFLMAO at 'battery fetuses'.

RainydayNE -> RE: Where's PETA When They're Needed? (11/4/2008 8:02:52 PM)

well it's actually a real issue. =p

i had free range eggs while i was overseas and they were amazing. you dont even have to think about the animals if you don't want to, it's just better for YOU.

DavanKael -> RE: Where's PETA When They're Needed? (11/4/2008 9:47:55 PM)

I have been involved with animal welfare and have been a vegetarian for over 20 years.  From this standpoint, I say to you" PETA are INSANE.  They do so many things for shock value and kill more animals taken into their custody than do most high kill shelters in the US.  PETA sucks!

Honestly, who put you in charge of deciding whether domesticated animals, wild ones or even humans (in this case, a threat of assault on a human, from you-above) should be harmed?

If the only creatures you adore are whales, cute kittens and pups (give or take a feathered friend) then it might explain the loneliness and need to find solace in a website for a source to air everyday dilemmas (which may or may not exist).

Animals value respect as much as human beings do.  Not just SOME people, all., not just SOME animals but ALL.

PETA or no, there are extremists in every faction of almost every group who's simple purpose was to change any given ongoing and existing laws by drawing attention to certain situations.

So why is someone who feels a need to display some sort of 'unreasonable reasoning' and fear that her purchase of goods that have been created from acts of cruelty might cause assault, distress and bodily harm yet then threaten assault (of a human) and bodily harm to another for dumping a kitten or a pup?

Someone, some day, might find you not so cute and unworthy and and all blubbery and prefer you be used as kerosine lantern oil. That day will also be the day in hell when you thought God did you a favor by giving you a cute fuzzy polar bear to play with.

Isn't that Greenpeace's turf?

That's my understanding, and they put forth a lot of effort for that cause.

Rainyday, my sister raised chickens awhile back and I agree - there's nothing like walking outside, picking up a freshly laid egg, and cooking it for breakfast. It was amazingly wonderful - so rich and filled with flavor. Yum!

you don't need a mink coat. who do you think you are? Cindy McCain?

where a regular coat like the rest of us.

And I'm sure PETA doesn't have unlimitied resources to do EVERYTHING they want. But they do great work when they can. Many people enjoy all kinds of different species as you say you like whales, so even a person like you has a lot to be thankful to them for.

I think it is up to Ms. Candystriper reagarding the question of whether or not she 'needs' a mink coat...not you. it's none of your business.

Actually, I think you'll find that once something is posted in a forum for public consumption, it becomes everybody's business.  But perhaps you are new to this whole "Internet" thing?

perhaps you misunderstood what I wrote. Ms. Subatomic311 claims that someone else does not need another object. that is a ridiculous position to take as how can one individual every decide what another individual needs? values are subjective, desires are subjective. trying to force one's opinions about something as simple as a fur coat onto another person because of self-righteousness is not a mentality that should be encouraged or praised.

Most people refer to the practice as "factory farming", however. http://www.farmsanctuary.org/issues/factoryfarming/

manxcat -> RE: Where's PETA When They're Needed? (11/5/2008 5:29:42 AM)

Cage free eggs and free range eggs are available in most markets in the U.S.  Hell i live 50 miles from the nearest decent supermarket (85 from a walmart) and even i can get cage free eggs.  Just sayin'. [:)]

http://www.motherearthnews.com/Sustainable-Farming/2007-04-01/How-to-Decode-Egg-Cartons.aspx

Just because something is cage-free/free-range doesn't mean the living conditions are ideal.
Quoted from above link...."Nevertheless, “free range” usually means the laying hens are raised in large flocks in big open warehouses rather than in stacked cages. They can walk around, flap their wings and preen their feathers a little. “Cage-free” does not mean outdoor access. “Free-range” implies some outdoor access, although it is probably very limited, and on dirt or concrete rather than pasture."
Better than battery cage farming, of course.

I buy my eggs from a friend who has a farm. I asked if his chickens were able to roam and not be caged up. He laughed and said "yeah, they roam so much they think they should come right into the house!"  Nothing quite like a fresh egg.

The only good thing I can say about PETA is that they try to make people more aware of where there food comes from and the conditions in which it's raised.
Check out http://www.locavores.com/   try to eat locally grown food and with the seasons.

RainydayNE -> RE: Where's PETA When They're Needed? (11/5/2008 6:50:38 AM)

yep, that's another issue altogether. the fact that the labeling terms have so many loopholes, idiotic farmers can just weedle their way through them. raising massive amounts of chickens out of cages and in warehouses, but with populations so high that they might as well be in cages isn't any better at all
but you gotta keep prices down, otherwise consumers won't buy and there will be no fancy profit or new porche for the ceo =p
blargh

in europe, they're lightyears ahead of us with this stuff. but with prop. 2 passing in CA, maybe we'll finally take some big steps ahead in regards to animal care.

Irishknight -> RE: Where's PETA When They're Needed? (11/5/2008 7:05:14 AM)

I have lived much of my life on a farm.  Every animal we raised was raised as humanely as possible.  If an animal was suffering, my dad would put it down.  If I forgot to feed them or water them, he would kick me in my ass for mistreating them.  We never had the giant production facilities that claim to be farmers today.  We had fences to keep the dogs out and we had sheds for them to run into to get out of the rain and to keep the owls away.
I hated it as a kid.  Now, its how I have chosen to live again.  No hog lot pork from pigs who spend their lives wading in pure feces.  No tortured chicken eggs.  Within two years, this farm will be producing enough food for my family and maybe a little extra.
I am sure PETA would love to come out here and free all of my "mistreated" animals.  I hope they don't try.  It will be a bad day in Mudville if it happens.

Also, someone mentioned seeing half starved horses in fields.  Had you seen two of mine this summer, you probably would have judged me to be an abuser.  I have 5 horses.  Three were fat.  Two could not stand the heat and would not eat.  Neither I nor the vet could make them eat until the 107 degree heat factor days went away.  Don't be so quick to judge if you don't know what is going on.
