You can't conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him -- Robert A. Heinlein

Also by Heinlein:
quote:

Those who cling to the untrue doctrine that violence never settles anything would be advised to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and of the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler could referee, and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk, and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Nations and peoples who forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms.

I have heard a more succinct version of that quote, If I remember it rightly it was:

When diplomacy fails then there is always need for war

Sounds more like Clausewitz than Heinlein, but, yeah, the gist is the same.

All the best quotes come from Eeyore:

"To the uneducated, an A is just three sticks."

"When someone says ‘How-do-you-do,’ just say you didn't."

"A little Consideration, a little Thought for Others, makes all the difference."

"We can't all, and some of us don't. That's all there is to it."

Oscar Wilde:

"I have nothing to declare except my genius." (At New York customs)

"
One should always be in love. That is the reason one should never marry. "

"Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious."

And from Barack Obama:

"We are the ones we have been waiting for."

Some Greek and Italian quotes and proverbs

The liar and the thief rejoice in their first year only.

Act quickly, think slowly

I fear the man who drinks water and so remembers this morning what the rest of us said last night

A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in

One minute of patience, ten years of peace

It is not what they profess but what they practice that makes them good…(politicians should take note of that one)

A person's character is revealed by their speech

Where there is a sea there are pirates (we can change that to modern time…where there is a web there will be liars and fakes…to answer some of the recent threads..lol)

The tongue has no bones, yet it breaks bones

Remember that you are only an actor in a play, which the manager directs

For what is a woman, what has she got?
If not herself, then she has naught
To say the things she truly feels and not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows and did it My Way
