miss: I posted this in the other thread and will repeat it, because I don't think most Americans, let alone non Americans realize this: There have been assasination attempts and one succesful assasination on every President since Franklin D Roosevelt, save Eisenhower and Johnson. Roosevelt became President in 1933. So we have a pretty good history of nutjobs running around trying to kill Presidents. So yes, I believe it is a reasonable assumption, not a racial assumption, that there may be an attempt on Obama. There has already been one plot to assasinate him broken up by the Feds. * I * also believe that in Obama's case it would likely be race based. But in the end it is no different than the other attempts: Simply an asshole with a gun and a cause. For me, the cause is irrelevant, the act is the tragedy. I also believe that the Secret Service/Govt. Intelligence will be able to protect him from harm, as they have the others, save Kennedy. * I * also think it speaks volumes to the job the Secret Service does to protect Presidents and their families that only one idiot with a gun has been successful. Hopefully he will be the last. mbmbn

The Secret Service is very good at what they do. And they keep most of it secret. There are often little tells of just how hard they work, though. Anybody notice the size of that podium he was standing behind last night?

That's true: if there is one thing the US government is good at, it's the secret service. Obama will be fine - that's what I have to think, otherwise I"d go insane (haha) with worry.

I wouldn't worry about it. There will be a lot of opposition to Obama, and most of it based on things other than his skin color. The smart ones will work within the system to change his legislation, reduce his base of power, etc., and do so legally for years. The dumbshits who hate him because of his race and will try to simply shoot him will be, well, dumb, and will be up against a Secret Service that has decades of experience.

You have to work your way up a political party in Britain, the electorate doesn't vote directly for the Prime Minister so an Obama phenomena just couldn't happen in Britain. I think that would be the case in many European countries which are parliamentary democracies. The other is, only 3% of the population is black and something like 5% Indian, Pakistani, Chinese etc etc. and there seems to be more prejudice and racism between all of them than there is between white and the minorities so its not as though there is a big support system.

It is admirable that he would undertake the drive to be president knowing the risks. Trust me, there is far better protection now than in the Kennedy era, Michael. I have a cousin that served in the secret service during the Clinton presidency. There is an awful lot they do that we really have no clue of.
