Status: offline 		        It's easy to get classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Kitten.  All you have to do is disagree with them on something.

       With Westboro, they are absolutely right, but let's consider our sources a little more...

Status: offline 		I vehemently   disagree with the court that one has a "right" to do this.

It is not free speech it is harassing  the family.   Inflicting emotional distress, on purpose.  One can get a fine for prank calls but we allow this?  

To me it falls under shouting fire on a crowded theater.    I would not protest a funeral. I might be glad someone expired- but isnt the civil thing to do is to not speak ill of the dead.

No one has a right to harm others like this.  The court is wrong.   Let the dead rest in peace.   How many westboro member funerals have been protested by others?

That's your opinion and you have the right to hold it. My knowledge of the Westborto church's people and activities comes from a disturbing BBC documentary by Louis Theroux - watch only if you're feeling strong that day.

a funeral is a private matter.    these folks dont go to births yet.   the intent is to manipulate the media and to inflict emorional harm onto another.   free speech means freedom of thought... not to crash someone space and  wreck the mourning. When a person mourns they are very weak spychologically.  That is the worse time to provoke them.  It was bad enough dealing with mrs R at dads funeral. she was rrejoiceing cos he went home to the lord.  I thought man are you fucked in the head.   at 21 yrs old, I wanted dad home at home on earth.

Tho- her son Rick, a fishing buddy of mine committed suicide in the gargae he built with his own hands.  he died in his van clutching a bible.  it was 3 days befroe anyone found him.

the point is- it is an emotional time.   the intent is to harrass and harm.  not to express a view.  a letter to the editor expresses a view.

Status: offline 		Hunky - sorry, I didn't explain myself very well. I abhor expressions of hatred and think they should be curtailed. The law, however, says these people have the right to carry on with their disgusting provocations. I agree with you that something ought to be done, but bar from changing the First Amendment, I fail to see what avenues the victims of these people can take to make them shut the fuck up.

Status: offline 		        Since changing the First Amendment is off the table, Kitten (without people like me getting very aggressive with our Second Amendment exercise), what we have to do is counter Westboro with speech of our own.  The doc you reccomend would be an excellent example of how we do that.

Status: offline 		They used to picket soldiers' funerals but a law was passed that they had to be x feet away from it or something if I remember correctly.

Almsot the entire church is related, btw...

Status: offline 		A big happy family   - and they can still stand near the funerals. There are always ways to circumvent those kinds of rules. No, what's needed is a law that penalises what they're doing with a nice hefty fine.

Status: offline 		What happens at soldiers funerals is they are required to stay a certain distance away, off the cemetary grounds in most cases, and a group of bikers, the Freedom Riders, park themselves between WBC and the funeral and rev their harleys loud enough to drown them out. So they are normally a nuisance more than anything else.

However, being as he's President elect, there should be enough police around to keep them far away. Free speech doesn't give them the right to get within shooting distance.
