I'm all for free speech, but this is just ridiculous!

Agreed. Have you ever seen their website or blog? Jeez. It's enough to make you want to vomit... Or look up the Anarchist's Cook Book and send a home-made pipe bomb ...

Ya know, they have noise canceling technology that can make a turbo-helicopter almost silent.

Can`t we use this same technology to council out these fools during funerals?

WOW! now that's evil.

I vehemently   disagree with the court that one has a "right" to do this.

It is not free speech it is harassing  the family.   Inflicting emotional distress, on purpose.  One can get a fine for prank calls but we allow this?

my late husband was buried at a time when all military funerals in this area were being protested.

I hated the fact they had that right.

and yet- the wrong writing on a t-shirt gets one kicked out of a public forumn, an airplane.

somehow those people in THAT situation are irevokably harmed.

Except it's not a public forum, it's a private enterprise.

You've seen the signs.  No shirt, no shoes, no service.  We reserve the right to refuse service......

Odinists are a hate group to them.

Are you talking about the Asatru members who believe that only Europeans can participate?

I used to read their newsgroup on Usenet; many shared this belief and if you went to the communities' web pages, you'd find most in the "European only" camp, and a second, much smaller group that was "all comers."

I've said this before but I think it's worth repeating.  If there is truly justice in the after life, Fred Phelps will be condemed to spend eternity as the janitor in Heaven's gay bathhouse.

thorn, they are allowed to limit membership on any grounds they see fit. There are Hispanic and Black groups in which I would not be welcome, so why not them as well ? I used to belong to a Polish club, so I have no beef with it.

Of course they don't go around disrupting funerals. If they did they would be dogmeant in my eyes just like anyone else. If I were at a funeral and they started their crap I would probably head out to the car to find the proverbial blunt intsrument.

I have been saying for years that we don't need censorship, we need decency, we don't need more laws, we need common sense. Sometimes I forget that some were not born at a time when decency and common sense were prevalent.

Its a religion which by whatever name attracts its share of nutters - mainly consisting of two groups, one being neo-nazis who erroneously link northern heritage and tradition with their racist ideas and the other being "reenactors" who like everything to be "authentic". Both groups dont like the idea of non-northern Europeans taking part, albeit for different reasons.

Both however are wrong - the nazis for the reason stated, the "reenactors" simply on the basis that the religion is an evolving one, not one fixed in time and place (such as is the case with a certain other religion one might mention).

This was how at least it was when I was last involved - I left the mainstream some years ago because it proved so difficult to (a) get rid of the nazis and (b) convince the "reenactors" that the tradition and heritage should be evolved to the modern day and world if it was to have any relevance. And it does have relevance to the modern world if it is so evolved.

Since changing the First Amendment is off the table... what we have to do is counter Westboro with speech of our own.

The Westboro Baptist Church has been very visibly and vocally spreading itssentiments of hate far and wide for several years now.  Definitely one of those groups that makes me gritmy teeth and remember that freedom of speech means the stuff that pisses me off too.  'Course, one can always counter-protest.

The best way to "cancel" these people out would be for people to remember that while free speech is a constitutionally protected right, getting listened to is not. I remember the "kid" preachers back about 15 or so years ago screaming names like "whore" and "blasphemer" at passersby while they yelled incoherently about bible verses coming to their minds at random. As soon as they stopped being confronted by the general public, all the purpose of it was gone. Deny these people the satisfaction of a response and they will wither and die like that tomato plant you forgot to water.

ShieldWolf -> RE: westboro babtist 2 protest obams gram funeral (11/8/2008 12:48:38 AM)

What reenactors are you talking about?

LadyEllen -> RE: westboro babtist 2 protest obams gram funeral (11/8/2008 3:26:10 AM)

Hi Shield Wolf

The "reenactors" as I call them are those who want to live a religion, albeit selectively of course as few would enjoy the downsides, as they thought it was a thousand years ago. They will strive to have historically accurate clothing and equipment, they will try to use forgotten languages in their rites and so on.

Now there is nothing wrong with this per se if it is done in order to connect with the ancestral stream - but the impression I get I'm afraid is that this has little to do with it and its more a way of competing to be seen to be the most religious and devoted by way of the accuracy of the reenactment of a way of life that our ancestors themselves strove to better - in a way, the decision to promote that old way of life and depict Asatru as that is actually an insult to our ancestors, who must wonder a great deal about their descendants' rejection of all that they hoped for.

Quite simply, one does not need all that historically accurate paraphernalia, one does not need to revive ancient languages (except for runic studies) and nor does one need any of the other aspects of reenactment (which in itself is a viable pursuit) in order to fulfill one's rightful purpose - and in fact these can become stumbling blocks to that fulfilment. Asatru is a living, evolving tradition, not one fixed in time and place, and it is best through our deeds in this life now in this world now that we express it.

Hunky - sorry, I didn't explain myself very well. I abhor expressions of hatred and think they should be curtailed. The law, however, says these people have the right to carry on with their disgusting provocations. I agree with you that something ought to be done, but bar from changing the First Amendment, I fail to see what avenues the victims of these people can take to make them shut the fuck up.

There are other ways of doing things. For example many don't like to see people burning our flag on our own soil. The court said they could do it legally. Texas passed a law making the assault of a flag burner a $5 fine. Thats a creative way of solving things.
