candystripper -> Christ! No News about Losses Suffered by Gays? (11/6/2008 12:41:06 PM)

I cannot find any reliable news outlet about the losses suffered by GL people in Tuesdays's race.  I don't get why I'm not seeing  a damned thing on tv -- never mind on the front page of the NY Times-- about the losses suffered in what?  6 states-- as gains made by GL people towards parity were rolled back -- including the land of 'fruits and nuts' -- California, for Gawd's sake!

Is anyone interested in this event?  How come no one bothered to alert me to the factoid that this was happening during the race? I don't myself reside in a state where I'd clue in from the blitz-attacks made by homophobes evidentially made during the race .

All I can point to is that attitude -- 'I'm straight and I'm not interested in getting married again myself' -- so why should I care about how society at large changes? -- seems to account for the phenom.  But I know African-Americans who are also GL people too.  Why aren't they shouting from the roof tops?

The info is out there.

Don't count Cali out BTW. There appear to be legitimate legal challenges to be made against prop 8.

IIRC, weren't those same challenges made when Prop 8 was put on the ballot, and a judge denied them?

Well it was mentioned in some of the threads here on CM, I read a bit about it on CNN and Salon.
The information is/was out there, you just have to read or listen.

Maybe if you circulate enough memos then the next time it happens you will be alerted?? [8|]

This has been all over the news in MN. CNN, Fox, MSNBC just to name a few. In fact, it's on Fox news right now.

I don't hold a strong position on this subject one way or another, because for myself, traditional meaning of marriage is a church and state sanctioning of the union between a man and a woman, everything else is a civil union (which should carry all the rights and responsibilities of two adults in society for legal/tax purposes.   Having said that, I would support gay marriage if it came accross my precinct.

Now, I'd like for you and anyone confused about this, to divorce the subject of gay marriage from the sufferage and history of being dark skinned/african descent, because the two issues were never, are not now, and will never be the same.    I'll accept that all social ills are society's problems, but to specifically mention blacks not showing up in droves protesting is slightly misguided thinking to put it mildly.   M

DedicatedDom40 -> RE: Christ! No News about Losses Suffered by Gays? (11/6/2008 4:22:03 PM)

Gays are going at it the worng way. Every time they battle on 'civil rights' and 'equality' grounds, they lose.

They need to turn being gay into a religion, then they will get anything they want, with little resistance.

FullfigRIMaam -> RE: Christ! No News about Losses Suffered by Gays? (11/6/2008 4:34:23 PM)

I don't know how they could do that...
I do believe that their civil rights are being violated if they're being denied equal rights and responsibilities as adults living with/loving each other.
Of course with the divorce rate being so high, I don't know why anyone would want to fight to get married, but that is a personal thing for me.    M

Wow, what a fucked-up state!
They treat Illegal Aliens better than Gay/Lesbians out there!
After "Prop 187" passed overwhelmingly some "activists" went "judge shopping" and had the will of the people overturned.

Don't worry Obama is pro Same sex Marriages.
They will have their day.

Actually, no he doesn't.

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/issues/issues.samesexmarriage.html

Barack Obama
Opposes same-sex marriage, but also opposes a constitutional ban. Says he would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment. As stated on the Obama campaign Web site, he supports full civil unions that "give same-sex couples equal legal rights and privileges as married couples, including the right to assist their loved ones in times of emergency as well as equal health insurance, employment benefits, and property and adoption rights."

Says the Employment Non-Discrimination Act should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. Advocated legislation that sought to expand federal hate crimes law to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

Says the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy needs to be repealed.

Candi, you don't live in California which is probably why you're not seeing California footage on the opposition to Prop 8:

4,000 protest in Los Angeles

And so it goes...

TabrisMaceth -> RE: Christ! No News about Losses Suffered by Gays? (11/7/2008 12:33:27 AM)

How fast and hard would Obama lose if he said gays should be treated like people? White people are terrified of being called racists, but no one gives a shit about being a homophobe. I'm sure that would change, though, if a bunch of gay people got together and started rioting...

I like the sound of this. Is this what was rejected in California? Gay people can call themselves what they like, the religious right can have their narrowminded victory and everybody wins. Something tells me I have this wrong don't I?

CalifChick -> RE: Christ! No News about Losses Suffered by Gays? (11/7/2008 6:16:49 AM)

Mad, California already had what you're talking about, and still will have it.  Couples can register with the state as "domestic partners" and receive the same benefits, as I understand it.  That part will not change with this amendment.

What I cannot remember is if the feds treat you as your state treats you... whether you can claim "married" on your tax return if you are registered domestic partners.  I think you can, but I'm not sure (and don't have the time right now to look it up).
