I am not allowed to start a sentence with "no." "Please, no" is acceptable, though.

We are not allowed to talk about Mongolian yak herders (I am being 100% serious), after The Stupidest Fight in The History of Fights.

Spelling is important as is punctuation, as they can change the meaning of what you are saying.  Misuse of words can also change the meaning, as can mispronunciation.  All have an effect at how a person is perceived.  F.E. Our president mispronounces the word nuclear.  It (among other things, of course) has made him look even more of an idiot. Language and words are powerful, and one can totally lose the message by any and all of the above.
Many times, someone elses definition of a word can change the whole tenor of a conversation, if one does not realize they are using a word in a different context.  Women speak differently from men, and people from different countries speak differently from each other.  It is difficult enough with all of these differences to ensure clear communication, so it would seem to me that one would a least make the effort not to add in any other errors which could cause confusion.

And what of people who derail threads by inserting snippy and insulting remarks? Is that an effective communication form? Does it add substance to the conversation or does it "change the whole tenor of a conversation?"

To the OP, with my former owner I was not to call him by name, and I was not to berate myself. Misuse of grammar or incorrect use of words were always corrected, as well. "I'm doing good," for example, would never go uncorrected.

actually, if you knew her the way the rest of us do, you would understand that there was no 'snippiness' in her comment at all

miss thing? LOL. Hmm, that doesn't reflect snippiness...

But to answer your question, I thought your original comment about IB's spelling was rude. I used the word "snippy" because I thought it was a nicer word than "rude."

Indeed. There is a thread in Off Topics about spelling and grammar, if you wish to continue there. I invite you to read what I posted in it, as it explains my thoughts on those who miss an entire message because they are too focused on the way it is presented.

And thus ends my involvement in the hijack of IB's interesting thread.

My apologies, IronBear.

"Whatever" isn't BANNED but it's sure to get a negative reaction out of me instantly.

"Going to go" is not grammatically incorrect (depending on how it's used, of course).

And, like most of the other posters, I've never heard "congrashulations."  I dislike "gro-shrees" for "groceries" and "sud-jest" for "suggest," but I wouldn't BAN them.

For my part, few things are universally banned in Bruin Cottage or in my presence. They are:
  • "What ever!"  People using it usually are displaying a lack of both vocabulary or the ability to form a proper responce. Alternatively, they are just lazy and if so they demonstrate a complete of respect for people they make that somment to.
  • "Going to go!" This is gramatically so incorrectg that it makes my teeth gring when I hear it. You are either going, will be going or have gone.
  • "Unique" is a word defining something or some one as a one of a kind and yet people apparently do not understand the meaning of the word and add to it by stating "Very Unique" and so on.
  • Not a wong word but so badly mispronounced in the USA and coppied by the untillegent youth here in Australia. Congratulations mispronounced as Con-grash-ulations instrad of the correct Con-grat-ulations. In some cases I watch such mispronounciations occuring when people are determined to talk through closed teeth instead of opening their mouths and enounciate words properly which also leads to much mispelling.

it's not a rule or anything, but this is a point that he pushes
also i'm not really supposed to say "i'm sorry" without saying why or what i'm sorry for
it's all about meaningfulness

I had forgotten about "I don't know." That was an unacceptable answer, in my case.

Hmmm....Well, Iron Bear, my answers will more than likely come as no surprise to You... The one's to typically get me into trouble are when directed at myself: dumb, dumbass, cow, stupid, loser, fat cow, and the list could go on forever.
The one that i'm no longer permitted to use as an automatic response is, "i'm sorry".  For the longest time it was an automatic response to most comments directed my way.

Greetings Sir,
"Ok" is not permitted to be said and as far as writing, neither "chatspeak" nor abbreviations are permitted.  It reeks of "lazy slave".  There are a lot more positive rules (as in DO this) rather than negative (as in DON'T do this) that are set at this house.

As far as "going to go" with respect, it is in fact quite grammatically correct.  {Be verb + going to + base infinitive} is one of several methods used to denote future tense.    "We are going to visit my family for Christmast" denotes a plan to visit somewhere in the future.  It is an acceptable term in English as well as in other languages ("Voy  a ir" (voy and ir being "go" verbs) has the same meaning in Spanish "I'm going to go").  Similar to "have to have" {aux verb have/has  + to  + base infinitive verb}so as to denote "must" or "should" plus the action or the "don't do" as noted above is a similar pattern), perhaps it is the alliteration and repetition of the same words that may be grinding on your nerves.

The important thing, though, is that the ones that are yours follow your rules for whatever reason you have them.

well wishes,
sunshine

[sm=gaah.gif]   Okay, "fix`in and fit'in" need to be banned from the WORLD lol.  OMG I never honestly expected words to be able to be nails on the chalkboard to me until i came to Tennessee and heard them lol.  If people want to sound completely hillbilly and uneducated, those are two words to learn.   My other favorite is my girlfriend down here always uses the word carry instead of bring -- i'm going to carry so and so home.  I will carry the grocery's home.  I aways ask her if things get heavy for her.            [sm=Groaner.gif]

But to be fair lol they hate when i say gonna and pop.

kyraofMists -> RE: Are there any words of phrases which are banned in your relationship? If so why? (11/9/2008 1:29:04 PM)

With permission I have been allowed to add other words that are banned:

His given name
Stupid in reference to myself
Fuck you or fuck off outside of play

Knight's Kyra

Aynne88 -> RE: Are there any words of phrases which are banned in your relationship? If so why? (11/9/2008 1:43:33 PM)

Criticising my own appearance is frowned upon.
Starting or answering with "No". *Which I have been sorely remiss on the past two days....
Forgetting to respond after a thank you or comment with 'Sir' soon enough. He just recently told me he does not like it when I use his given name that often, so adjustments will be made. He's worth it[;)]
Can't and Won't don't go over well. I am always always allowed to express my thoughts for full discussion though.
