You personally haven't, but plenty of others HAVE called me out for my preferences. More power to them. I think the right to express yourself must also include the right to voice your disagreement. If I think something is silly, I have a right to say so. In some situations, it may be in poor taste to do so, but in a forum where honest expression is encouraged, then I don't think it's poor taste at all to say "I think this practice is silly, and here are my reasons why." I also it helps if one stays focused on the practice itself, and is careful to avoid turning criticism into a personal attack.

It seems to me, the participants on both sides of this discussion have so far managed to that very well.

What's a REAL word? All words are made up at some point.

I hate the use of lower case letters to signify a bottom and won't use them. I am a person. I think one should think twice about serving a top who expects such garbage. I've had incidents on e-lists with dommes who've taken umbrage to me daring to use a capital letter. They also gave me grief because I dared to use the term mistress instead of finding out what title each one individually preferred to be called. I came up with the solution of using the title uppity wench on the grounds that since there was no way I could use a title that made them all happy the only fair thing to was to use one that made no one happy.

Frankly, I believe that a bottom decides if a person is a top or not.

I also have big problem who use titles. I think they're joke. I make it a point not to use them when referring to the person and if challenged on it I make a point of loudly letting them know that I only recognize titles that can be verified as legitimate in Jane's Peerage.
I have friends in the scene who are European nobility and they make derise comments about these people usually starting with 'My family tortured peasants for six hundred years...

I Can see where some Domms would be Upset about You calling them Mistress only. I've been Screamed at for not asking them their name.[:@]

I've learned it is just Polite to ask what they like to be called.
You have a Bdsm name and probablly perfer
people to call You that? Maybe it is no big thing for You?

But alot of people find it Un~appropriate or un~exceptable,
or even Rude.[:'(]

I was visiting a friend this weekend and we were looking at some old issues of Latent Image (a BDSM personals magazine) he's planning to donate to the Leather Archives. Many of them weren't dated because the publisher wanted to keep the "shelf life" as long as possible, but they certainly were published prior to 1990 and some might have been as old as the early 80's.

"Domme" did appear in some of the advertisements.

I will capitilise Master and Mistress, but that's pretty much it. I loathe the A/all type speech, and always capitalise my name, because that's what my parents named me.

I think it's pronounced exactly like 'Dom'. It's principle use is as a abbreviation to distinguish between male and female dominants.

All words are made up, internet notwithstanding. Do you think the words airplane, automobile etc were in use hundreds of years ago?

I tend to remove self awarded honorifics from peoples posts. I used mistress in the context of speaking about all the dommes on the particular list.

Wellm yes it ism but is kind of dishonest to do so when you know you're not going to use the honorifics they've awarded themselves.

i use lower case letters in most of my typing, unless it's a formal letter. have since i was a young'un. feels strange to use upper case, but then again i'm not well schooled in bdsm catechisms.

Actually, this isn't quite accurate, as the feminine form of Dom (whether you use Domme, Domina or Dominatrix) also includes those individual who are TV/TG and may still have the penis, but gender-identify as female.

In the same way, a physically female dominant individual who gender-identifies as male will often be called a Dom.

(I'm not either... I use the public-address and private-address honorifics common to my own background and am "Lady Abbess" publically and "Mahgi" -- which is gender neutral and means wise one or wise teacher -- to my servants and acolytes. It all ends up being a matter of taste and personal preference.)

Man..A/anyone so sensitive that a Capital Letter annoys them is not gonna hang with me for long; i have a low bulls**t tolerance and find the idea that Capital Letters are somehow annoying to be silly. There's so much in this world to object to...spitting, littering, not voting, etc. that to fixate on how someone else uses Capital Letters strikes me as silly.

Sorry, MasterHyde; i do like You but lately we seem to disagree alot.

Merriam-Webster (10th edition) recognises "Dom" as a noun; but not Dominant/Submissive/Domme.

Etymology:Latin dominus master

1 \*d*m\ — used as a title for some monks and canons regular
2 \*d**\ — used as a title prefixed to the Christian name of a Portuguese or Brazilian man of rank

Obviously we have given the word "Dom" a new meaning.

The use of caps and lower case is only a matter of preference. However, in particular to proper useage of grammar, only proper nouns should be capatalized. And so, if one uses the word, "Master" or "Mistress" as a form of address, then it is proper useage; but if used as a description (ie. She is a mistress.), then, according to proper usage, it should not be capitalized.

Some people in this venue like to use caps to denote the heirarchy, and others don't really care for it.
