I have a German friend who uses "Domina". I have always like that term better than Domme.

What's a REAL word? All words are made up at some point.

Domme is derivitive of Dom and describes a top who dosn't have a penis.

I'll give you that so long as you don't try to pull the "it's pronounced Dom-May, it's french!" ... haha.

afmvdp -> RE: Capital letters? (12/22/2005 10:13:03 AM)

Domina is always my prefered term... but anyway to the point of this post (again, wow, I'm suprised I am having to answer from the voice of the old school)

When the internet first came about and it was nothing more then dialup remote Bulletin board (BBS) and then eventually the springing forth of IRC (and then AOL and now into the infinite choices) it was simply created as easy ways of distinguishing each other immediately to allow better addressing during conversations.

Normally the capital M or D signifying a Dominant/Master and lower case s for submissive/slave was added to the front or back of message board names.

This also started the annoying trend of the H/him H/her for unknowns and another (personal preference mind you) seemingly pointless habit of everyone creating screen names such as DomDomsalot or LordDomly and sub4you or slave2him, things of that sort. I dunno, to me needing to signify my position is as unnecessary as needing to broadcast sexual preference. To me it just never was that necessary.

Anyway, that's how it all started in the way back when and now it's just one of the bred traditions that people continue without ever really knowing why other than they read it online or saw someone else doing it and assumed they should too.

These days some just view it as a respect thing, a recognition of someones position even if they are not in that position of power over you

My two cents.

I don't NEED anyone to type my name with a capital, it's a username.

Now, if you call me by Travis or Budda (the names I answer to outside of the forums), then I require it.

However, I do require mine to capitalize You, Master, Sir, and lowercase i, me, her name.

It takes that much more power from her.

It's the way our kink is.

That simple.

And how exactly does it take power from her?

I believe he is refering to willpower, as in it takes a conscious thought to intentionally capitalize certain words that relate to him and as such takes a bit more focus. Either that or he has worked out a type of internet voodoo that far surpasses me.

I was always taught that way, its a preference for Me-- as much as writing at times to My boy in 3rd person--such as "She smiles"--we profess to say we let people in the life be--yet we criticize for writing styles--how ludicrous is that? That's no different that condemning someone for making a sub beg for something by saying, humans don't beg--its the L/life people, we all have O/our preferences, I don't call you out for yours. don't call Me out for Mine---

I agree. For crying outloud, let people type the way they want to. Why should the way they type be held up to inspection all the time? So what if Domme is not a "true" word? Who gives a rats ass? So what if I choose to type Me instead of me, I will type the way I want to, and if some don't like it, dont read it. For people who "claim" to be so open about shit there sure are alot of titty babies complaining loudly about the littlest things.

In response to the OP, there is no difference, other than in a chatroom it makes it easier to figure out who is a sub/slave and who is a Dom/Domina (Yes I capped that on purpose, get over it) without having to go looking at profiles. As far as the "real world" goes, whatever your Master or Mistress tells you to do is what you should do, all others be damned.

My point is, relax. It isnt the end of the world if someone uses the word Domme. There are too many big things to worry about these days without sweating the small things.

Favorite quote "I never did mind the little things" works wonders sometimes. Try it. <s>

I don't give a rat's arse whether 'Domme' is not a true word, but I do care about the fact that in speech you either have to mispronounce it to distinguish it from 'Dom' or you have to use a tautology 'Female Domme'.

I think Domina is much better, and will be using that from now on.

The only thing that occurred to me is what happens when you want to refer to a Domina in the plural?

Dominae?

You are correct.

Even though, the internet Voodoo sounds like a good idea.....
