I also own a cell phone though it's strictly used when I go out of town and in case of emergency if I need a phone and not near to a pay phone. My parents are getting up in age and their health isn't the best and so they know that if they need to contact me they can. Though when I am somewhere that it's not practical to have mine on then I either set it to a low ring or turn it off completely! It doesn't rule me!

I viewed cells as some form of electronic leash, a public nuisance, and an unnecessary cost having a home phone already.  But my friends nagged me, because they couldn't get hold of me when they needed to, and I kept forgetting to check the answering machine. So, reluctantly I purchased one.

Now, a little over a year later, I hate that my cell phone is so archaic, I want one with a keypad, because I text like a teenager, and my cell is my primary contact mode for the general public, and use my home phone for only special people.

I went from caveman to "can't live without it" in the span of a year.

I love my cell phone! Oh its cute, its orange and flips open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard, the camera is much better than I ever imagined a cell phone camera could be and I have a memory chip so that I can upload them onto Frootloop.
Now that I've moved I don't get a lot of calls ([:o]) but I will never give up Moxi (my cell phones name).

I have one, but half the time I forget to take it with me.  I also go back and forth from South Jersey to North Jersey, (appoximately 2 hrs at a time) and I really wouldn't be without it in case I break down on the road.  I also have a teenager to keep tabs on.

Sure, we survived without them for most of our lives, but if the technology is out there, well, why not use it.  Too bad that even the cheapest plan costs a fortune, but whatever.  My kid recently taught me how to text, and I'm loving that... So I'm getting my $125.00 a month's worth

When I dropped my cell phone and it broke not too long ago, I cried.  I have since been using my backup phone.  No camera, can't get SMS messages, no internet access.  It sucks.  But, I can still text and call, so I guess it could be worse, I could have had no backup phone!!!

I'm a parent, of course I have a cell phone. They have them also.

He has one as do his kids. He's the first person I call when the car breaks down. And if he's in the area, he comes and rescues me.

I have a cell phone and, most of the time, it doesn't get any reception where I live so it's useless. But, there is still an active landline that I could use for local calling and emergencies; there's no outgoing long distance enabled with it (the line exists because of the DSL; cable service here sucks big time).

The cell is on when I travel but that's it.

I mostly don't like it but, when needed, it's nice to have it.

Yep, I have one and it's a good thing since I'm away from home right now. Sir and I can talk whenever we want.

I call mine my "tether".  I said that I love it, and I do when it is convenient to me.  I Do like how it tells me who is calling, so I can choose to answer or not.  I am looking forward to getting a Blackberry Storm next year sometime, so I can have the internets with me (yeah, like I need THAT!)

I refuse to be accessible all the time, regardless of the tether. I am very glad we all have them though, for those early mornings when mom calls and says "Don't be afraid, we've been in an accident..."[8|]

moonvine -> RE: Cell Phone Poll... Do you have one or not. (11/10/2008 1:57:19 PM)

I have a cell phone and it is my only phone, and has been for years.  Since this is true of many I do not  understand the requirement for a home phone in profiles.  Nor do I understand the requirement of a cell phone.  I have no need or wish to pay for 2 phones and with having the cell I can get calls anywhere I happen to be, but don't have to take them.

PrincessJ77 -> RE: Cell Phone Poll... Do you have one or not. (11/10/2008 1:57:20 PM)

I neither love nor hate my phone.  It's a means of communication.  If I need to call the auto club for emergency assistance, or my imp to contact me.  I don't sit on the phone for hours and I won't talk while driving.

I have had my cell phone service for I guess 5 years now under my sister account.   I never know when the welcome wagon will put me in a dead stop, so my only phone is a cell phone...

My sister had both a landline and mobile, but she went to war with time warner and never having phone service internet. slow dumb ass teck sent out dont know swat. The upside is we got tons of credits to the bill. Dropped the land line because it was just a total waste of money

I love my cell... I don't go anywhere without it... I don't even go to the bathroom with out having my phone with me... And when the UM goes to be with his dad, I like to know that I am reachable if needed... The same with him... He HAS to have his phone on or I FLIP!!! plus, I love getting woke up by my phone ringing in the morning and Sweets is on the other end.... :)

a would rather join a queue to beat the shit out of those who have loud personal conversations in public places[8|]

Oh, I'm with you girl.  It drives me out of my freaking mind when I'm shopping and people are walking around yakking about nothing on their cells.   What makes me even crazier is people who are walking around with a Bluetooth hooked to their ear so you can't even tell at first that they're blabbling away on a phone.  They look like a lunatic walking around having an animated conversation with themself, complete with wildly swinging arm gestures.

LOL...this past weekend, I got in my car to discover I had left the cell phone in it all night.  And waiting for me was a text from my son saying "I got in a wreck last night, call me when you get a chance!"   Geeeeesh!!!  (He was okay, it was the other driver's fault.)

coupleowl -> RE: Cell Phone Poll... Do you have one or not. (11/10/2008 5:41:22 PM)

We have a cell, bloody useless thing. Just because we keep them around us for some reason gives everyone the desire to call us.

CalifChick -> RE: Cell Phone Poll... Do you have one or not. (11/10/2008 5:42:15 PM)

By the way, OP, thank you for starting this thread.  Now I know who really does have a cell phone (despite what they might have told me to the contrary!).

i have one with no emotional attachment. It is my business number as well as keeping me available to those that depend on me...

tornaway -> RE: Cell Phone Poll... Do you have one or not. (11/10/2008 6:06:47 PM)

With life being as full as it is - the last thing I want is phonecalls everywhere I go .

Besides that ,  it's really disturbing to see what cellphones are doing to society .  I see people riding in the car with their kids - a perfect time to bond with them .  But no - the parent(s) , or the kids , or both ( ! ) , are on the phone speaking with other people !

Or folks walking together in a beautiful park - talking to each other ?  No - others , on the phone ... or while on a bicycle , or a motorcycle .  Damn.

Or in the movie theatre , or the library , or the supermarket , or a concert , and any number of other public places .  I don't enjoy all the phones going off around me in what would otherwise be a peaceful setting , or  having to endure being privy to painfully trivial conversations at top volume .  License to be rude - it would seem .  I subscribe to a past assessment by Dr. Phil - calling rude cellphone talkers  " self important twits" .

I know this doesn't apply to everyone with a cell - but it sure does cover many .

And then the driving issue !!  I could go on for hours about how incredibly dangerous driving has become ,  using handheld or not - the distraction factor is the same .  You may think you're driving just fine .   I've become really good at picking out drivers that are otherwise engaged -  just from observing cars at a distance .   Whoopee.

Not for me .  [:'(]  I'm quite content to wait till I get home and check the machine - or if it's something I need to know right away - I can access the message.  And if I break down somewhere in a car or on a bi/motor cycle - I'll deal with it.  Always managed before !

I also realize that some people have a real need for them . But please - use some common sense and courtesy !  [;)]

Most of us are not nearly as important and universally needed as we think we are !
