You would have to ask the person(s) who use it what it means to them. Some of the ways I have seen it used in regards to poly d/s relationships: Alpha is a job description and the best person for the job is alpha. Their job is to manage the others so that the dominants wants/instructions are completed. Alpha means they are the first submissive in the relationship. Alpha means that they are the most important/valuable submissive in the relationship. Many times when I hear people talk about needing alpha/beta, it is often to placate the insecurities of one so that others can be brought into the relationship. Instead of dealing with the insecurities, a structure is devised in hopes of not having to be faced with them. The problem though is that insecurities will be expressed one way or another and the stability of the relationship will be threatened. Knight's Kyra
